A team of imaging experts, scientists and historians will set sail for the Titanic on Friday to gather the most detailed photographic record ever made of the wreck.
The BBC has had exclusive access to expedition members here in the US city of Providence, Rhode Island, as they make preparations to leave port.
They'll be using state of the art technology to scan every nook and cranny of the famous liner to gain new insights into its sinking.
This will be the first commercial mission to Titanic since last year's OceanGate tragedy. Five men died while trying to visit the lost ship in a novel submersible.

And do you think that one incident will stop it? It's just like airplanes accidents happen but they continue. Titanic's wreck was discovered in 1985 and there were many visits with subs to it, though in this expedition they are using robots not manned sub.

A company called Magellan Ltd did a detailed 3D scan of the Titanic around 2 years ago and it was widely reported in the news. So this different company (RMS Titanic Inc) is essentially doing the same thing but it also has an additional device onboard that can image some of the structure under the sediment as well - 3:57.

Apparently if they try to raise it it will likely just disintegrate due to metal-corrosion. It’s fascinating that the Mary Rose, which sank in 1545, was able to be raised remarkably intact 437 years after it sank, yet barely 100 years after Titanic sank, raising it would be futile. There’s a lot to be said for old stuff. Planned obsolescence wasn’t a thing back in Henry VIII’s day. Unless we’re talking his wives! 😮
