I would like to know with the real engine, how they lubricated the cylinders and crankpins without a pressure feed or a sump of some kind. Also, I doubt the steam engines of 1912 were more than maybe 8% efficient at best, as far as the imput BTU's reaching the propellers. This means that out of 100 tons of coal, only about 8 tons actually drove the ship. The other 92 tons was lost as waste heat, mostly in the condensers. With the model engine, as a machinist myself, I can appreciate the fantastic amount of time and detail work that goes into a project of this magnitude
@emislive
@emislive 2 жыл бұрын
Dr. Wikipedia's "automatic lubricator" should get you started on different ways to oil the cylinders. Displacement lubricators are common on smaller and hobby engines, but no idea which specific type the Olympic class engines used. On continuous run engines where you can't just fill up an oil cup (or maybe your engine is fancy), lubrication of stuff eccentric to the shaft would be done using long pipes with hinged and telescoping joints to mirror the motion of the lubricated part.

There were walkways and ladders all over them, there was a team of guys going around periodically manually lubing, most of the reason why the mechanicals were exposed. I know on steam locomotive pistons they were gravity oiled, every time the train stopped they would fill the oil tank mounted above the pistons, I'm sure there was something to that sort
@ryans413

I’m curious, since the files can be bought, what would happen if instead of pla I used petg, could I use steam like the actual ship did or is that still a bad idea? Also considering upping the scale since I own a cr-10 v3 is that possible or about the same size as your prusa?
@SaitekFreak999
@SaitekFreak999 Жыл бұрын
PETG is going soft at 85C so no, that will not work. The CR10 is much bigger than the Prusa, so you might be able to make the model bigger. Just remember to go up in the kinds of steps that allow you to use the right screws. The original is M2, so you could try 150%, 200% (in the video), 250% or 300% scale, at which point your printer probably runs out of room.

Hey, maybe in the future, but not sure yet. At this stage, the printing, post processing, assembly & fine tuning of a model takes quite a lot of time and an engine would therefore be unreasonably expensive.
