Our cruise ship stopped at the site of the Titanic sinking to honor those lost in that tragedy. I'm currently on a transatlantic voyage from New York City to Rotterdam in the Netherlands and yesterday we stopped at the site of the Titanic wreckage for a wreath ceremony and a moment of silence.

111 years later, we’re still benefiting from the lessons learned that fateful night. This is why we have more than enough lifeboats, muster drills, and rules about communication. Those who perished on Titanic have saved countless other lives at sea.

I’am currently on the Jewel of the Seas. It was such a fitting tribute. After watching the clip I shared with my wife that the fact we have life jackets in our stateroom and and motor lifeboats waiting is a tribute to those we lost. 11 years in the Coast Guard as a marine inspector has made me appreciate their sacrifice.

Thanks Tony. Glad someone was able to bring this solemn ceremony to us. As a life long mariner, I hope this kind of ceremony will reminds us all that the traditions of going to sea is so much more than margaritas on the lido deck. As a side note; I hope it's not missed that the ship's captain ended the moment of silence with the sounding of the ship's whistle. It's always been a whistle to a true mariner, and not a horn. Same as it is on a train. In the infamous lyrics sung by Johnny Cash; "when I hear that whistle blowing, I hang my head and cry". Great stuff, Tony. Thanks.

On my recent and first sailing with Holland America I noticed the ship was ran in a closer fashion to an ocean liner than most other cruise lines. This more formal, focused approach gave me a greater sense of safety and respect for the sea. Bravo to Holland America for its classy, solemn ceremony honoring those who died on the RMS Titanic, RIP.

I had the distinct honor to be at the 45th commemorative celebration of Pearl Harbor. The amazing thing was they brought together Japanese participant survivors, as well as American survivors. At the start of the event there was huge tension between the groups by the end of the day the groups were openly, drinking sake together, exchanging stories, hugs and tears.

Thanks Tony. I have been on two Princess Ships, one en route to Australia and the other ex Sydney heading to the US. By chance both cruises were at sea on the 25 April, ANZAC Day, this is a sacred day for both Australians and New Zealanders. This is the day they remember the fallen in all wars and peacekeeping operations, which both countries have taken part. It was a huge move on behalf of the Captain and the line. During the ceremony on each voyage, the Captain slowed the ship, and a dawn service was held by the main pool. I am an Aussie Vet and on each occasion it was a great gesture by the Captain and the crew who took part.

In this day of memes, pithy sayings, etc. (and I'm as guilty as anyone using them) sometimes for these real events where many people, through no fault of their own, lost their lives it is good to stop and think about those lost as real human beings and not just a stat/moment in history.
