This video compares Titanic to what was intended to be RMS Britannic. Britannic was never fully completed, as she was required for service during World War I as a hospital ship. Unfortunately, she sank during the war and never got to live her life as a passenger vessel.

Seen from 2022's view Titanic looks much more fresh and airy with it's light colors (not so common in 1912). The darker floors of the Britannic look like a step back from todays point of view.

Just because the floors are darker doesn’t mean it’s worse. Variation is key and that’s why not everything has to be white.

Also keep in mind these room renderings are done through some kind of paint software/ design program, the quality and accuracy could have been a bit off. Especially since we don't know what Britannic's final interior decisions would have actually become since she never was completed because of the war outbreak. It may have looked nicer in person for passengers who would have sailed on her.

Personally i think Britannic looks like a liner from the 20s, and looks more modern. There's more contrast, more variation in colours, and a more polished final design. It's very easy to date Titanic's interiors though. Even when you look at Olympic, the replacement of her tiles and furniture after WW1 with Britannics makes her look far less edwardian.

Other than some interesting color choices with Britannic (fashionable at the time), I think aesthetics wise the Olympic Class only improved with time, as was the intent. And it progressed very naturally, in my opinion. Each design change was well justified based on the popularity of the space in the preceding vessel and in keeping up with the decorative trends of the time. It remains a tragedy that only one out of the three great steamers got to live the life it deserved and was designed for, but, at least on paper, and with more modern conveniences aside, the Olympic Class remains a shining testament to the ultimate in comfort & luxury at sea.

I think it was because White Star Line wanted to give Britannic variety. It wouldn’t be too good if Britannic was trying to look exactly like Olympic because Titanic already did that. Britannic was trying to be different anyway.

​​@@retroryan838not even the Titanic was fully identical to the Olympic either. Maybe her initial shell, but Titanic was given a look and aesthetic of her own as well. Different deck layouts and public amenities were offered on Titanic as opposed to the Olympic. People assume Titanic's interiors were the same as Olympics because there's hardly any actual pictures of titanic since she only had her one maiden voyage. I've seen some pictures of the Titanic wreck as well and there is a fairly large piece of the intricate iron work that would have made up the dome over the grand staircase, and unlike the Olympics design, Titanic's is actually different, Titanic seemed to have a more Greek inspired pattern that makes up the iron work of the dome.

+Jun F. Advento III Thanks! It is indeed a gangway door, though I'm not sure if it was for the passenger staying in that cabin or for loading luggage or something like that. Interestingly, the one on the port side didn't have a gangway door, just the one of the starboard side did. I'm not really sure why this was the case.

@@Loucap_ agreed thanks for sharing the history of putting 12 boats on the stern is kinda interesting it was for 3rd class to not need to go and rush to the boat deck so now they have there own boat deck proves that white star learns from there mistakes

​@@Loucap_most ships companies put lifeboats on the stern, especially after the Titanic disaster. It makes sense too, the Titanic only had boats on the boat deck, and 3rd class passengers had the least amount of access to the boats for that reason. The boat deck was only accessible to 1st and 2nd class passengers. It's for safety reasons and ensure steerage passengers have boats as well in the event of an evacuation.

@@DraperStan23 Olympic managed to add extra lifeboats and still maintained her good looks though. It wasn't just the lifeboats on Britannic though, it was the extra deckhouse. I get too that it was for practical reasons, improving the third class facilities, but regardless of reasons, it still spoiled the looks.

It's actually common for sister ships or even running mates to have a unique style of woodwork for the different tastes and competition. Britannic was designed to compete with the German Superliners, which had similar interior design. The loss of Britannic was a blow for White Star Line, but in the end they got the German Superliner Bismarck (renamed Majestic) as War Reparations. Best way to compete with the now former German Superliners is by owning one and using it against her sisters.
