Thanks a lot, Miz. Eh, well. How "misses" became "Mrs" that R comes from where? Cheers
@Theaccentchannel6 жыл бұрын
This is such a great question! Please bear with me through my long answer. This question actually made me laugh because it made me realize that I have never thought about this word having an /R/ in it at all! The abbreviation “Mrs.” Is a shortened form of the word “mistress” (the female version of “master” which over time evolved into “mister”,) so as late as the 18th century, “mistress” was used to refer to a woman of high social or economic status and had nothing to do with marital status. In the late 18th century when“Miss” became a popular term to refer to unmarried women of high social status, “Mrs.” (pronounced by then as /MISS-uhz/) became the preferred term for all married women. No one really knows for sure why the /R/ was lost in the pronunciation. The most common theory is that most speakers were too lazy to pronounce the /str/ combination in the middle of the word and this reduced colloquial pronunciation became more popular than the correct pronunciation. This happens in English all the time and still continues today. A more current example is “iced tea.” Most English speakers pronounce that phrase as “ice tea” or /EYSS-TEE/. It’s difficult to pop out that last sound in “iced” so most people just skip it. The same thing happened to the delicious dessert that was called “iced cream” when it was invented. It was so difficult or inconvenient for people to pronounce the last sound of “iced” and follow it up with the /k/ in “cream”, that almost no one did it, and so the spelling actually changed too and now it's always spelled "ice cream"! Thanks so much for bringing this up. I learned something new from it too!
@Melvorgazh6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, Mistress of English language! ;) And you learned something too? From my question? It was a fine explanation anyway. As I am a Celtic language speaker, I prefer ice-cream too. Languages do change quickly. I still use the old spelling of some words often. Cheers and greetings from Brussels ;)

Hi, is it common to say these titles with names and not always with the family name? thank you
@Theaccentchannel5 жыл бұрын
This is such a great question. Using these titles with first names, rather than last (or family) names does happen, but it isn’t very common these days (many years ago it was more common) and the context is a little different. Using one of these titles with a first name can be a way for a younger person to show respect to someone who is older, higher ranking, or more experienced. For example, my daughter calls her teacher at preschool "Miss Valentina." But outside of a school setting, using a title + first name doesn’t happen very often. Certain cultures still do it as a sign of respect, but if this is not part of your culture, it is best to avoid it unless you truly understand the implied meaning and context behind it. To show respect, Title + Last Name is preferred. Thanks again for a very intelligent question!

@Theaccentchannel5 жыл бұрын
Good question. Madam and Ma'am are both polite ways to address someone in conversation. Think of them as the female equivalent of "sir". Both are formal and super-polite, and pretty similar in meaning. However, "Ma'am" is much more commonly used in the the United States. "Madam" is usually only used in very formal situations ("Madam Secretary") or in the salutation of a business letter ("Dear Madam")

I know that married women, and women who are windowed, are referred as Mrs. I had some teacher and teacher's assistants that preferred Ms versuses miss.When I was in high school, I had a teacher's assistant who was in one of my classes, so did not mind being called Miss or Ms. I even asked her, and she said that she did not mind which one. I am now saying Ms, if I do not know, or if I am trying to be professional or respect.

I was educated in a british school system and Mrs. is abbreviation for Mistress. I’m confused on how Misses ties in to Mrs. Just like Mr. is for mister or master. In my school the head teacher was a headmaster or headmistress not headmisses. Misses is so incorrect.
@Theaccentchannel7 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Thanks so much for the comment. In the video, I'm referring to the pronunciation of the word "Mrs.", not the word meaning. "Mrs." is pronounced exactly like the word "misses" as in the sentence "he misses you when you go away." You are absolutely correct about the word meaning. Thanks for help me clarify!

thanks for this clarification and also thanks for (trying) to teach how to pronounce them properly. oh my... what an unnecessarily sexist thing (the men obviously having the unproblematic case on their side). I'd recommend reforming the language and officially removing Mrs and Miss from the language then! I have to say... even as a half-way native speaker I am having issues pronounce 'Ms.' properly, just as I find it difficult to gauge what was said by others. When in doubt, one should assume that people don't want to offend anyone....

How do you pronounce Ms. Sullivan? Does it sound different from Miss Sullivan? Or does it have to?
@Theaccentchannel6 жыл бұрын
Yes, they should sound different. Ms. has a /Z/ sound at the end so "Ms."=/MIZ/, Miss has an /S/ sound at the end so "Miss" = /MISS/. The difference between /Z/ and /S/ is not huge, because your mouth is in the same position for both sounds, so it is very easy to just skip over the vibration in your throat that should happen with /Z/ sound. BUT, turning /Z/ into /S/ everywhere in your speech (which many non-native speakers do) will affect the overall rhythm and timing, because vowels always get a little longer BEFORE a /Z/ in connected speech. Plus, the /Z/ sound adds vocal power and improves the sound of your voice by adding resonance with all the vibration in the throat. Hope this all makes sense and feel free to ask for clarification. Great question!

Technically they should sound different but a lot of people pronounce them the same way. As long as you understand the difference in spelling and meaning, it's not a problem, but as I say in the lesson, a lot of native speakers make the mistake and confuse them. I do teach this to my students who are non-native speakers because it is quite confusing for many of them and I understand why!

@Theaccentchannel4 жыл бұрын
Yes, very good! Mrs. originally was the contraction of the word "mistress" (female version of master or mister) and was used for both married and unmarried women. Sometime in the 17th century the word split into Mrs. for married women and Miss for unmarried. So you are correct that the origin of the word comes from "mistress" but in today's world, we don't look at the abbreviation Mrs. and say "mistress" we say "misses" or /MIH-suhz/. Hope that makes sense and thanks for the great question.
