Port Adelaide still wears the B&W prison bars in the SANFL. This jumper is not going away any time soon... what is interesting to me is that the two jumpers side by side, (Collingwood and Port) are quite distinct from each other.

It WAS an up yours and as a port fan, I can assure TJ none of us were embarrassed - we loved it. I was at the game and I’ve never seen so many fans wearing prison bar guernseys, merch or with prison bar banners. What’s embarrassing is that the AFL have pandered to Collingwood so much on this issue. Heritage is important to our club & it’s supporters - perhaps it’s hard for people to understand if they don’t have an emotional connection to the club and haven’t lived through the history. The league should remember that not too long ago this club was on our knees (financially and performance-wise). If acknowledging our heritage gets the fans engaged and excited, shouldn’t that be the priority of the league? Let us freakin’ wear it at least one game a year!

@@aussieintexas61 you make it seem like another group of individuals popped up in 1993 and were totally not affiliated with the Port Adelaide SANFL club/wanted nothing to do with them in the slightest. Obviously those who negotiated the AFL bid for a Port Adelaide team in both 1993 and 1990 were part of the Port Magpies club management, however the condition was imposed upon them that the administration of the club (as well as branding - which I can understand, not having a second “Magpies” team in the comp makes sense) needed to be seperate from the SANFL side. It was a condition they chose to accept but I think we can fairly confidently say it wasn’t Port Adelaide’s ideal, but they were fairly set on entering the AFL and accepted the condition. Just because on paper & financially the clubs were totally seperate, it doesn’t mean that supporters & members felt that. Most PAFC AFL supporters previously supported Magpies in the SANFL - we feel that history. My dad supported Crows until Port entered the AFL comp in 1997 because he was a boy from the Port and followed the club locally. On the most part, the average joe didn’t see the difference despite the name & branding. The clubs were reunified in 2010 to benefit the club financially and solve the branding problem (two clubs). Now that problem doesn’t exist, so people bringing up that old argument “port power aren’t really Port Adelaide, they agreed this back 27 years ago” argument seems a bit irrelevant to us supporters. We don’t want to be the Magpies, we just want to acknowledge the history of our club now that we are reunited (or clubs if you want to get super technical). Not one person I know thinks we should become “Magpies” in the AFL or wear the guernsey against Collingwood.

The AFL approached Port Adelaide for it's history, heritage and fan base. The bars are part of that history like it or not. The AFL can not pick and chose what club can display it's heritage. Either all or none. the AFL has recognised the history of PAFC and that should be the end of this saga. The can wear the bars against any club other than Collingwood or in showdowns if they so chose.

Get your facts right. Port Adelaide became the Power, the Port Magpies team that floated around when they joined the AFL was a different club. Port wanted to leave the SANFL all together when they entered the AFL but the new club had to be formed to fill the void

The AFL version was directly named after, with the intention of drawing a link between the Port Adelaide Magpies and the Port Adelaide Power. Even Collingwood and Eddie McGuire agrees that there is a connection and/or continuity between the two versions of Port Adelaide. He's the one that drafted the agreement that said, Port Power could wear there prison bar Guernsey during the heritage round. Implied with in that agreement, Eddie and Collingwood tacitly agreed that the prison bar Guernsey is Port Adelaide Powers heritage Guernsey. They are acknowledging a connection between the two versions of Port Adelaide.

From the start the two teams we’re completely different teams with no connection whatsoever other than name, it’s only recently the Port Magpies have been connected and become the reserves team. Port are wanting to treat the showdown as a heritage round between two Adelaide teams, most people in Adelaide would understand the significance of that between both teams. Eddie agreed because he was aware the heritage round was soon to be scrapped and its debatable whether that was well know between all the clubs but if it wasn’t then it is a fairly dodgey agreement drawn up between both the AFL and Collingwood and in most cases could and would have serious legal ramifications as they both knew it would become null and void. I still don’t see what the issue is with Port wearing the jumper in a game between 2 South Australian clubs played in South Australia, it has zero impact or effect on Collingwood to say the least but what it does do is bring more hype to the game which can only be good for the whole league as it gets bums on seats. Collingwood nor Port own their jumpers, the AFL do and in all honesty I prefer Port in the teal but the fact it has put so many ignorant and self righteous peoples noses out of joint I actually side with Port because of it. The biggest problem is the AFL should have shut this down much much earlier this year when Port approached them and asked for permission but they didn’t and tried to put it back on Collingwood and Port, the league made the biggest stuff here and should have said as soon as Port approached them about it “no” but just over a week out from the game Port still had no final decision, that there is far worse than anything else

Seriously ....Tony who? The Port fans loved it, it was done for them and to recognise the clubs heritage. What a lot of those against this don't get is that Port are the only non Victorian club (Sydney moved and Brisbane merged and all the rest are manufactured) that rose from the suburbs to the largest competition in the land (and yes it was the PAFC that joined the AFL, the Port Magpies were then recreated for the SANFL till they merged with the PAFC). Yet unlike all those Victorian clubs we're not supposed to show pride in our heritage, because Eddie McGuire gets upset? Of course it was an up yours to Eddie and the AFL that sided with him. That's what Port do ....they stand up for themselves in the face of adversity!

This is on the collingwood website admitting they stole the jumper colours from SA In the period when Collingwood was being formed, early in 1892, it became obvious that the club would need a different uniform from that of Britannia, the club which was the precursor to Collingwood. Britannia’s colours were blue and white with a scarlet sash and it was considered that those colours too closely resembled those of Footscray, a team that was already in the VFA. Williams Samuel Crawley was a supporter who had returned from a trip to South Australia, where he South Australia’s inter-colonial football team and was impressed with their black-and-white jumpers. As a local, he also knew that magpies were abundant in and around Victoria Park.

I don't support either club and I don't care if Port wore their traditional jumper in the change rooms nor do I have a problem with them wearing it during the showdown clash, however when Port Adelaide entered the Afl competition 20 odd years they forfeited the jail bar jumper and the Port Adelaide Magpies name, they also also signed a contract to that agreement, so I don't know what Port is complaining about it, you are no longer the Port Magpies but the Port Power with a new jumper, so get over it!!!

Port Adelaide reminds me of a young rebellious child who is in and out of youth detention centres and eventually becomes a criminal, spending time in prison. They entered the AFL in 1996 with a Teal based playing uniform and should not be allowed to alter or modify their playing colours. Collingwood has the trademark on black and white in the VFL/AFL therefor no other club should be wearing it. Every other club obeys and respects that rule so why not Port Adelaide? I say ban them for the rest of the season and if they ever do it again in future seasons de-register them from the AFL and tell them to seek another league!

Collingwood supporter who grew up supporting Port in the SANFL until they made the AFL. Was all for them wearing the prison bars in showdowns but they haven't helped themselves since day dot coming into the AFL trying to break away from the Magpies saying they weren't the magpies but a new club and then a decade later going the other way saying they are the Magpies but under a new nickname, logo etc. It's was why i never followed them into the AFL. The mixed messaging and the stupid contract they made for only wearing it during Heritage Round has not helped the cause. When Port entered the AFL the team that was playing in the SANFL under the name Port Magpies was a new team based at a new location with different administration, everything that was the Magpies went to the Power. The black and white stripes are Port's original heritage guernsey dating back to the birth of the club in 1902. The AFL named it 'heritage' round. Why on earth can Port not wear it to honour the history of the club, on the ground and in their change rooms. What should they wear instead Tony, to incorrectly pay homage to their heritage? Collingwood has zero to do with Port's heritage.

Oh gimme a break. I don’t barrack for either club but Port are clearly a basket case, they are Power not Magpies and when they signed up to the AFL they knew this. They have worn 25 different jumpers in their time. I used to admire and even quietly like Port, but now I know why the majority of SA hate them, coz they are a bunch of flogs!

Explain your "logic". Heritage is a complete history. Port have worn the blue hoops and the magenta strip in past heritage rounds. The prison bars have been worn the longest and have been the most successful and also means the most to the fans.

Once again people are jealous of the more attractive black and white guernsey design belonging to the Port Adelaide Magpies. Watch the 1993 Collingwood versus Port Magpies trial match here on KZbin. They don't clash as bad as you would expect and the Port guernsey stands out. I think the controversy is more to do with the Magpies name and emblem ownership.
