I remember being at work in the Aus desert and getting score updates from a colleague. He wasn't even a Port fan, but came running over when the comeback was on! Being a Port fan aside, not enough teams play this way anymore instead trying to reduce the damage of a loss. The fast and hard nature of a comeback effort, taking risks, going until it's over - that's how the game should be played.

Absolutely! The belief Port had in their fitness was immeasurable with Burgess at the club and their constant comeback wins that year Hinkley was a revelation with an all-out attacking style in contrast to all the ultra-defensive styles that had imbedded themselves in the AFL since the Swans had won the '05 Premiership! There were countless times in games where I can vividly remember the likes of Schulz and The Hoff getting a mark on the 50m arc and running freely into goal, as was the attacking setup of the team! The Dogs in 2016 played their part in changing the ultra-defensive concept by winning the Premiership and it has been a slow burn since then, but the 2020 Premiership and beyond will prove to be for the brave, attacking teams and leave defensive coaches in a 'has been' era I'm a born and bred Victorian and I'm a signed up Carlton member but I was gearing up to unleash on every social media platform and every talk back radio station I could get on if Hinkley ended up being let go by Port. Yes he and his players went into their shell a bit after the 2014 prelim, but what could have been not just for Port but the AFL as an industry if they had of gone on that year and spanked WCE instead of Hawthorn doing so. Champion Data and Ranking Points would have imploded.

Goosebumps. This is incredible. Over that two year span we played in some of the most thrilling games I've ever watched, having come from the absolute depths of despair as you eloquently put it. I still remember reading the news about John McCarthy in the schoolyard at lunch time in 2012 and just crying the whole night. I think about that 2014 Prelim and what could've been almost every weekend of footy, as I reckon we would have definitely beaten Sydney. Here's to a big 2020 and near future. NTUA.

2014 was the first year I was a Port member. This season is and always will be nostalgic for me. Doing the Never tear us apart song every game was the most exciting thing, the atmosphere of the stadium was thunderous. Having such a great team with Wingard, Boak, Shultz and more was great but there are so many forgotten greats as well. White, Neade, Butcher, Monfries were some superstar players that don’t get enough praise. I was gut wrenched at the end of that preliminary final, I was distraught. The magic of that season has never truly been recreated and it’s a real shame. That team was almost perfect but even though we didn’t win that season, that team has always been my favourite to date. Thanks so much for this video
@alyssacrypto2 жыл бұрын
I feel this was about the 2013 and 2015 seasons and my dockers. Hawthorn beat us both times we should have won. Especially 2015 we finished minor premiers and won the first qualifying. Our only major loss of the season was choking against a team going after 3-peat glory that had no right to win on our home soil and having lost against the eagles 2 weeks before the long road trip. It's insane we stumbled 2015. I really never recovered to have that spark like those years 2011-2015. With our changed guernsey and with Ross Lyon making us competitive the year he galvanized the group. It's not just success that makes barracking fun. But despair mixed with missed opportunity can rob you of the spirit when you see its not a bunch of guys willing to do anything for one another to succeed. Hawthorn being too good and taking their chances in that era broke many sides... Only Geelong got through to keep fighting for flags. And only a Bulldogs fairy tale run can soothe some of my disdain for thier time at the top.

Very similar to if Collingwood had of defeated Geelong in the 2007 Prelim final, the margin was less than a goal, it would have been Port vs Pies, Geelong wouldn't have started their afl era legacy as early. Collingwood or Port would have been Premiers instead......It's kool looking back at points in time where if one thing happens, it changes things drastically.

The 2014 preliminary finals is one of the darkest days of my football life. I was and probably always will be a hard Geelong cats fan, which meant of course that I hated the Hawks. After the previous years prelim and hearing about Ports story, I was incredibly eager for Port to win this match. When they lost I was devastated. Hawthorn went on to win not only that years grand final but the next years, and Port became irrelevant to me again. I like both teams now but it's interesting looking back at my childhood selfs views and reliving the memories

I still believe the better team won on the night the hawks took there foot of the peddle but made sure they didn't the following week! Port are looking strong right now but we have seen this before until they really get tested! I want to see big performances against big teams when it counts! Beating a top team at this stage of the season means nothing just like hawks just beat tigers and lions rd 1! These games get 4 points but they dont truely count in the big picture! But they do look really solid ! Great video send it to fox footy or channel 7 and 9 you could get a job doing this that's how good it is! Cheers mate! 👏👍

The tactic Ken Hinkley was using against us Hawks in the 4th quarter of that prelim was seriously scary. He was lining up his players at the back half of the square and having them flood forward during centre bounces, trusting their fitness to get them quick goals. We got past Port that year by some sort of miracle.

Considering how the 2020 season turned out, Port Adelaide almost ended the Tiger's premiership run as they were also a kick away from Preliminary Final victory. And remember those times when Port was so close in 2002 and 2003 only to fall short in those prelims and they ended up winning in 2004. I think Port Adelaide may be close to another Grand Final soon considering how the 2021 season is turning out.

Nicely done video mate. Painted the picture honestly and so well about PAFC. Such a shame we couldn’t get over the line in 2014. If only we also had kicked straighter in that game it would have been a different story. Hopefully better times ahead!
