@@grassmanBoca Oshie and Backstrom are injured and can't play The (LTIR) rule allows teams to exceed the salary cap when a player is injured for an extended period. When a player is on LTIR, the team can exceed the salary cap by the amount of the player's contract, known as the "LTIR Pool." During the playoffs, there's no salary cap, so teams can activate a player from LTIR without cap restrictions.

The answer to your question is yes. Neither Backstrom nor Oshie will ever play another NHL game, but if they were to officially retire before the end of their contracts, they would forfeit the remainder of their contracts.
