Glad you got the stag night scene in there! Nothing like that is a coincidence, especially on a show like this. People had to specifically pick and place all the lights and frame the shot so that we clearly see the full range of colour. Did you also notice the bright shade of green all over Sherlock's flamboyant "I know ash!" scene right after that? We know what that green meant in Victorian times, don't we? ;)

Wow. I had new feelings watching you point out that John's 'girlfriends, boyfriends' comment was about himself. I am ever amazed at all the new things I keep understanding about the show. I'd already happily accepted that Sherlock is gay and John is bi, but that moment, and having Sholto laid out as well, and also the military father figures explained just gave me deeper feelings. I actually felt something change in me seeing the gf/bf comment explained. Whoa. I loved this episode. I love thinking about John, too. And YES, holy moly, yes. Mark Gatiss and John grew up in the age of AIDS. Good point. So many reasons for John to be very secretive about his private feelings, and so self-conscious. I fell asleep last night happily imagining what that first kiss will be like. I can hardly wait. I hope Moftiss are lying and we are getting a relationship reveal this season.

Notice how the language change from ex-best friend to "previous commander" allows the writers to have Sherlock correct himself saying, "ex." Saying "ex-best friend" isn't quite as suggestive than saying "ex."

In fact yes, it is very possible that John and Sherlock are not gay/bi or in love with each other, but the fact is if you as you say have read all the originals they were written way before being gay was even remotely known of. So of course they weren't openly gay in the originals, that does in fact not mean that they couldn't have been. There is this thing called subtext, have you heard of it? It's been widely used for LGBT representation for over a century or even more, because being gay is barely accept today so the people of the community found a way to show that (for more information you can watch "Are They Gay?"'s video on subtext it explains it perfectly). It also doesn't sound much like you have watched the show at all, because the entire point of the fourth season was that Sherlock in fact does love and is not an emotionless sociopath. Which is NOT something that the BBC invented. The love between Sherlock and John has been there since the beginning, and wether it's platonic or not, is up to each for themselves. Also, if you may, please do not call Rebekah a "stupid bitch" because in fact she is lovely and intelligent and a blessing to the TJLC and LGBT communities.

I myself am bi and want to say that the way that you explained John's profession and his sexuality is just beautiful. Telling people that you aren't 50% attracted to girl's and 50% attracted to guys (especially for me) has been incredibly hard. especially because you see me or other people like me in what would be consistent with a straight relationship but being attracted to women as well is complicated and I have to constantly remind myself and others that what you see isn't always exactly what you would expect and that because someone looks gay or straight doesn't mean they are. My god... John is so jealous of Irene. Irene *knew*, as well. Irene *knows* that John loves Sherlock. Oh, my precious babies. Irene was just a way to show how Sherlock and John love each other. And being that Irene is a mirror for Sherlock...it's like John finds Sherlock doubly attractive XD (and it further solidifies John's sexuality). Irene, to me, is actually one of the best arguments for Johnlock. It shows that Sherlock loves John, but it also proves that John is bisexual and in love with Sherlock. I’m convinced. John is bi. This is a fantastic exploration of the evidence. And as for having a non-conforming sexuality while growing up in the 80’s, I can tell you from personal experience that you’re quite correct in your characterizations. I’d only add that it can still be just as challenging - in many important respects - for people learning the truth about themselves today as it was for us four or so decades ago (as you’re of course perfectly well aware, but I just wanted to reiterate it). Btw, I really like being “old.” I’m still apprehensive about getting yet older, but the prospect of being 60 or 80 isn’t nearly as troubling as turning 40 seemed to me when I was, say, 22. Being gay at 54 just isn’t a problem like I’d imagined it would be. It’s actually a hell of a lot easier. It lends me to feel bad for people like John, still trapped by the persistent ghosts of straight-jacketed childhood.

Secondly, before I start ranting; For the topic of this one, I can hear out so many of the arguments, There is only one element that makes me fear that it will not play out the way I wish it will with John being indeed bisexual and that ultimately John is going to be portrayed as gay if anything is; the BEARD. Beards in medias nowadays points out to a closeted gay man having a "beard", a fake girlfriend that he has no romantic interest in whatsoever, but parades around to deflect unwanted public attention from his actual sexuality and gives the celebrity an image of heteronormativity. It's a pretty commonly known saying and used an awful lot even nowadays among celebrities. So Watson shaving his beard for Sherlock might mean that he never had any interest in the girls because they were a front to deflect attention and he is gay and closeted. And ultimately he will come out for Sherlonck, because, you know, Sherlock doesn't like the beard, he likes John clean shaven. Meaning he does not like that John is trying to hide his true sexuality and he does not like a girl around one bit, and he wants John to be raw, to be himself. I don't know, but beard representing FAKE public stunt girlfriends really do ring some bells in 2016. For me the beard is not just Mary, it's a concept in itself, proving John is gay. But for sure, christ sake having a good bisexual representation is so freaking overdue, it's not even funny. Maybe it's mainly me and/or the place I'm living, but I feel like being bisexual is awfully misunderstood. From my personnal experience some straight people would assume you're queer and just repressed(especially older people), and some gay/lesbian would think you're just kind of a slut (yes males too), or fishing for attention, (now I'm not saying it's everyone AT ALL!!!! There are a lot of great, kind understanding people out there, both among straight and queer community, I'm just stating that at some point most bisexual person will probably hear some of those accusations and that it sticks all the more because it's not ever dispelled in media coverage) most people ultimately assume that being with a bisexual person is gonna give them too much competition/or fetishize it in a rude way, or that the bisexual person is still somehow "trying to figure him/herself out". Jesus, being bisexual is pointed out by psychiatrist as a potential symptom of a Borderline Personnality Disorder so what does that kind of things tell you about your sexuality when you have to come out as bisexual?! I'm not kidding anyone when I say, for some people coming out as bisexual might be an actual (VERY VICTORIAN) nightmare. That mainly tells me that a good representation is hardly seen at all on TV (or at least not in the shows I watch, if anyone wants to point me out though) and that why I LONG so much for John to be portrayed as bisexual (oh, please, please, let this happen). I mean, John is older so when the time comes, hopefully less people are going to be like "hey, maybe you're not sure because you're still figuring yourself out", he's hardly a teenager. Plus if he ends up with Shelock, that means "yes bisexual people can commit to serious stable relationships too", they don't choose a side they choose a person. (Personnaly, that's how I read the scene with Mycroft in SiP, as John not picking a side (straight/gay, but as picking a person Sherlock.) That would do so much to enforce a point that his relationship with Sher is not more in jeopardy because he likes girls too, that's it's not MORE temptations, it's just DIFFERENT variety of the same temptation, namely, having an affair, which he won't have obviously. There is not more threat on a couple with a bisexual person. I really think people need to hear this! So, yes, John would be the most MOST perfect character to set as bisexual AND he could dispell most of common bad imageries just by being himself.

Thank you so much for this. I've heard people call John mostly straight, and I bought it because fancy words: "occasionally heteronegative". And I understand your opinion that it's kind of homophobic since it adds to erasure. Of course it can be offensive, but I never took it that way, because I thought the people characterising him that way were open minded in a kind of way, with only a slightly different headcanon than me. And I'll admit I got carried away with that other headcanon. But thank you for reminding me of what I really think. I also think that when John said, "which is fine, by the way," it's something he says more to convince himself than Sherlock: I feel like he constantly has to remind himself of that not only to keep up with expectations around him, but also to make up for the past and the feelings he carries around with him his whole life because of it. Also, the fact that John doesn't tell Sherlock, but tells Mary about his ex commander/friend suggests to me that he's more comfortable telling her since telling her, his wife, exposes less of his desires than telling Sherlock, the man he loves. Also, when Sherlock said, "You're abnormally attracted to dangerous people," I didn't actually equate attracted with romantically attracted but rather just platonically across the board, but thanks for that extra layer. I think I knew that layer was teased at, but I didn't look at it under the microscope until now. I just saw it as all of John's associations have that element of danger to them, not just those most special to him.

"you're a doctor now too" to me seems to be something that a person could say when a bisexual person comes out... with the whole "pick a side thing". so "you're a doctor now too" is like "oh so now you're straight?" when john is with a women and vice versa when he's with a man and i get the feeling johns father may have said something like that to him.
