The reason why there's extra tracks on the CD is because the original US and UK albums had different track listings. The CD includes all the tracks included on both versions.

Great review! I favor the CD as well. My experience mirrored yours. You also get the additional tracks with the CD. Jimi had a few non-album singles that are collected on the CD. Jimi’s first album had some track and running order differences between the US. and UK. versions: the CD collects all of it in one place.

You mentioned First Rays as being cannon, if you enjoy that posthumous release I strongly recommend you check out Cry Of Love released in 1971, a year after his death. It’s equally as strong as the first 3 that he released in his lifetime, in my opinion.

The early vinyl pressings all had their unique sounding qualities. They had a more raw sounding mix. The new remasters have been somewhat cleaned up. Still nice to listen to.

I like the early 90's CD, sadly it has altered artwork but it's a great way to get the combined UK and US tracklisting. I was disappointed, a few years back the Hendrix estate put out very good high res versions of some of the early 70's posthumous Hendrix albums, I was hoping they would follow up with a similar treatment for War Heroes and the original three Experience albums but it never happened.

The original US version had the singles included, Hey Joe, Wind Cries Mary and Purple Haze which replaced Red House, Remember and Can You See Me which were on the UK version. afaik the rerelease had the omitted songs included.

Thank you for your honest guidance on this ground breaking album, I think you would be very happy also with the UHQR that just came out. I know it's some serious coinage to drop on one record, But for me as a Hendrix Fan It was a must. The wind cry's Mary, he is sitting in the room with you!

The US version of the album, the one you have on that LP, is my favorite debut album of all-time. The UK release didn't have the three singles. The last three bonus tracks are the songs left off the UK LP. The first three bonus tracks are the UK B-Sides of those three singles.

I did not compare CD and the vinyl LP side by side but I've listened to this album so many times since it came out and I was amazed when the CDs first came out I think mostly because you could hear intricate nuance sounds that weren't on my old worn down LP and the substandard system I had but when I heard a first pressing or first edition I'm not sure of the term but a guy I know his mother had an entire collection of first pressings from the 60s well what I heard are you experience on a quality system I could see almost the sounds the wavelengths were alive three-dimensional experience and compared to the CD which didn't have any dimensions to it in the air it was more like information passing to me or is whereas that vinyl first pressing was fantastic I could feel it in the air the different notes and instruments being played all separately. Not a very objective review but the experience of vinyl compared to CD was so dramatic! I would like to hear and compare the re-releases like you have of both the vinyl and the CD. My knowledge of CD manufacturer is limited but I know that compressing and various other methods are used so that a lot of CDs sound extremely different have less of the quality tone that was on the original vinyl and sound doctored. This is purely subjective and not of these particular recordings but just my opinion in general one such CD I bought was the rolling Stones on her satanic majesties request it was just muted and so dead compared to what I had remembered decades before and compared to the newer re-releases I heard on KZbin here or fantastic I don't know how much they were re-edited or remastered but the difference is like night and day that is to say dramatic

Original was not gatefold and had a paper liner. Also no lyrics or extra photos-- it didn't need it, the music was in itself enough.

The original '60s era pressings of Are You Experienced? that I have come across have been in very dire condition. So I guess we are really better off with newer ones. I have compared the most recent CDs to the original CDs that came out in the '80s. Major difference in the audio and mastering. CD mastering equipment and techniques have not only greatly improved, but have evolved over time.

I agree. BTW: I actually did find a first pressing a while back at a yard sale. It was in horrible condition but it was only $5.00 - filled with clicks pops and noise - in time I hope to get a humming guru and would like to experiment and see how much difference it makes.

@@TJRtheOriginal Here's hoping. I saved a dingy 1968 copy of Steppenwolf's first album by saturating it with warm water and a couple of drops of dish soap. I let the soap and water soak into the grooves on either side for about 15 minutes at a time. It literally looked like a murky sludge was forming on the surface of the vinyl. When I rinsed the record off in the sink afterward the water coming off the record was greyish color. I repeated this whole process and then gave the record a pass in a Spin Clean, and the record is now playable. There is some surface noise from wear and tear, but the record does deliver. The label on the record says "Steppenwolf" so I felt a commitment to John Kay himself to do everything I could to get the record cleaned up.

Wow! I might just try that. Not long ago, acoustic sounds had a big sale and I got the new pressing of the Mono mix of "Are You Experienced". Unlike the re released stereo version I talked about in this video, this was a direct from the analog master. It sounded really good. I enjoyed it......but it was mono .....And I think Jimi Hendrix is one artists who really needs to be heard in Stereo LOL.

Very nice review, but! It's nearly impossible to compare because : you are not only compare CD against vinyl, there are more components in the chain that influence the end result, the turntable and the cartridge and the phono stage electronics against CD player and line electronic input in the amplifier, every piece in the chain have their unique characteristics, so what you actually compare one string against the other and not particularly CD against vinyl. But all in all is ice and honest try, I appreciate effort.

Of course the digital CD version is going to have more detail (more info) encoded than the analog LP version. Problem is the digital version is soul-less, it's just 0's and 1's, a virtual representation of real sound waves. I like my analog versions much better, it's just more alive.

The original AYE? (both US and UK) had only 11 tracks. Like the Beatles, the US differed because A side singles were put in place of three less “commercial” songs. Imagine “Red House” being left off the issue in the country it originated from. 😡 I think the first instance all 17 tracks on one release was in 1993 when Hendrix’s albums were reissued by Jack Douglas, who also oversaw the posthumous albums. These reissues were before Experience Hendrix was founded.

After the heydays of the $5-$10 used Zep, Floyd, Stones, and Hendrix records, guys complained that younger people snapped up all the "good" albums. These people don't know (or as I've encountered, almost all refuse to admit) how badly they STILL care for their own vinyl (holding by grooves, piling without sleeves, not shelving after use, allowing cats to use sleeves as scratching posts, et cetera). Despite all that, they still expect to find a fresh copy cheap like they always used to...AND THEN STILL beat the crap out of any replacements they find! Abundance of old copies eventually dried up as they went through them, and here we are. Because I care for them properly, records I bought 40 years ago are in much the same condition today that I'd bought them in. I've even used them to dj at house/yard parties, bars, legions, weddings, and stag-n-doe events. Record care is easy, but those same complainers refuse to hear the truth that they likely caused their own problem, and are too stuck in their ways to change now.

@@TJRtheOriginal Sorry meant to tag you in my rant above but saw I didn't directly answer your question. Even on 1st pressings I've heard, it's what Reprise did to the recordings. Much like Elektra did to Queen or MCA did to Elton John, they ran compression that distorted everything, caused sibilance (S's sound like SH's), and stripped those recordings of bass.

They are both boring compared to the original analogue vinyl and especially the 4 track reel to reel masters same goes for Pink Floyd, The Beatles and many others. Butchered remasters of original tape recordings, how many times do they need to try remastering before there happy and get it right? It would appear NEVER. I will make an exception, I bought the Motorhead set Everything Louder Forever, man did Andrew Alekel do a good job on that, it is a masterpiece of work. As for those albums you have there they were remastered by Bernie Grundman 2022 and Alan Parsons was the original sound engineer simply cos he did the original recordings back in 1967

Well you've been off topic I turned in to here what you stated in title the difference between sound of vinyl and cd. . Typical for alot of stuff on utube. Way over half done and noyhing yet. How can these guys who don't even listen to lyrics of an artist., until 40 years later. Comment on the lyrics in music in general. He is a dolt . I will certainly not play to end. You show yourself, as not qualified to comment not only on the supposed topic , but unqualified to speak about other related topics, which also by doing , you ruin your credibility. At least put extraneous topics at the end of advertise I'm title what you are going to say. You waste listeners time. ........... And to compare any rock or popular lyricist, any even of the 20th Century to Bob Dylan , a song and lyrics writer who won the Nobel prize for LITERATURE,! Who else in contemporary music/lyrics can come close to being recognized as having a profound effect on literature and creating another dimension to the written word in History? Any way this guy bugs me alot, mostly because of the casual way he wasted the attention of others or at least their time by misrepresenting his presentation. How many times I have excitedly hit a video of Hendrix , to find it is a "cover'. And the player doesn't even put his name. Would be ok if it were the Monkees . I won't even listen to the rest , because he ignored the obvious... difference between a CD and vinyl. Cds, the same edition sound the same as each other ON THE SAME PLAYBACK MACHINERY. But what condition is your vinyl record, was it played too many times with a bad needle,? Might as well compare tape cassette recordings. I am not an audiophile, but I have heard a pristine vinyl are you experienced album played with good amps and speakers and I heard the difference, in 2012 or so. Vinyl has , more realistic sound, more 3 dimensional like sound waves are.alot of information isn't there on CD. However I liked cds until then, because so much more detail was there, at least it wasn't on vinyl, because the old records I had were worn out. Also alot of background can come forward in CD, depending on how the info is compressed, filtered and almost remixed. I thought I was going to maybe find out more about these things, instead of hearing some guy go on about lyrics he ignores etc Thanks
