I read an article quoting Virginia Wades views on Emma Raucana as Emma progressed through the USA, thankfully it had been picked up and made a small mention in New Zealand. Because of her comment, I managed a breakfast invite to a friend who had Sky TV and was, able to see the match live.. Made my day to see such skill and poise by a newcomer on the world scene. I have followed tennis for nearly 70 years, never missed a, Steffi Graf or Martina Navratilova match that was available, so I am really looking forward to what is available for my twilight years. Emma will always be remembered for the way she won the USA open as a qualifier but one of the main pleasures, for me was to see a young player who did not grunt and scream everytime she hit the ball and how nice it was to see someone with such a skill set and power equably successful with either single or double handed returns. A delightful exhibition of natural class which has been achieved through a lot of hard work.

One of the many truth and bright points that Wade made here about Emma and the final is the one where she refered as Emma "having that effect" on everyone. She was talking about how Leyla Fernandez didn´t played (and served) her best, but as much as nerves and fatigue had a big say on that, there is defently something about Emmas intelligent game that let her opponents feeling like they could have done better but not knowing exactly how. She reminded me a lot of many of Novak´s matches where they are so balanced, when the opponent is on the attack, they ust cover the baseline and go into rocksolid mode, reading and anticipating any opening from the other side, and as soon as they get the chance to switch to attack they do it so smoothly that is hard to understand how it happened. They can hit a crisp clean shot with tons of acceleratin, depth or angle with tons of margin and still let the oponent out of the point. Smart, balanced, quick and competitive as hell... yeah, Nole and Emma.

There is a lot of hype about Emma Raducanu. Her journey is definitely extraordinary from a qualifier to go all they way and win the US Open without dropping a single set at only 18 years old!!! Really unbelievable but i hope she stays focused and goes to win many majors. Just a reminder Maria Sharapova was only 17 years old to beat Serena William the World No1 female player at the time with multiple GS. She became World 1 at 18 years old however she never reached her full potential winning only 5 Grand Slams although she was considered by many from her Wimbledon Victory the next best thing in Tennis. It's just to show that you never know what will happen in the following years. I'm sure we are all anxious to see her play the next major tournament and how well she performs. Only time will tell but we hope to see her become a superstar in Tennis with many many majors.

Although she was MIGHTY over the last few weeks. I fear we've not seen enough of her to assume she'll storm every tournament from now on. Even Ash Barty who is leagues ahead of anyone in the ranking points, struggles from time to time. You can be on form in one Championship, and go out in the first round of the next. I really hope she does well, but her future results could go anywhere. This was no fluke, but she could have a bad day at the office at any time. We shouldn't heap too much pressure on her.

Sports is fickle like that. There's a lot of luck involved to winning titles and it takes a lot of patience. She seems to have a lot of strong qualities when it comes to work ethic, attitude, focus, energy, intelligence. She went from withdrawing from Wimbledon due to a panic attack from the pressure to a picture of mental toughness in New York. We'll see if she can maintain that. I wish her the best.

Of course there are many strong competitors, and therefore it is unlikely that she keeps winning at the same rate. However, when the right tournament comes, and she is on top of her game, she can certainly win again and again. I thought she had incredible quality, intellectually, mentally and physically. Of course, none of those are fully developed yet - which makes it so scary to think how she possibly won the US Open. To me, it was the most surprising sporting event and achievement in 20 years. Leylah had to come back again and again. That took a toll on her. Against Emma she just lost gas. Leylah's matches were brutal previous rounds
@kiabtoomlauj6249
@kiabtoomlauj6249 3 жыл бұрын
Leylah's skills are a bit above Emma's... but the latter clearly made the superior decisions, from one ball to the next, both defensively and offensively, something that mostly only very experienced veterans could strategize. There were a few crucial balls, for example, where Leylah dictated the ball, either through force or deep corner placement, that Emma responded correctly (both offensive through shot selection and defensively, by not committing to run in one direction or another, even though she clearly wanted to run one way, forcing, psychologically, Leylah to hit the ball incorrectly to the direct Emma was gearing to run: and those are in nano-second situations)... that earned her the points. Emma also, in her own words, told herself: I'm not sure when I'd get to play in Center Court/Ash Stadium again, so I might as well have fun, on every point, and be aggressive, playing a game and a style I want... by dictating and not always respond to what my opponent is doing... Again, all good/correct decision making, tactics, & strategies... When you do that and don't make unforced errors at the same time, you increase your chances of winning by very good margins (because such a successful approach, then, forces your opponent to react to you, mostly, & not dictating to your...)

@@kiabtoomlauj6249 Emma's decision making was superior to Leylah. But at some point, it felt Leylah was really fatigued. But she kept on fighting and almost broke Emma at the last game. Although the achievement was utterly remarkable, I think it's interesting that Radacanu won her matches leading from the front. The panic attack she suffered at Wimbledon was while she was a set down and a break. It got to her understandably given the circumstances and the expectation. Panic attacks occur when you've lost (or feel like you've lost) control of a situation. I really look forward to seeing her come back from a set down to win a title. THEN we really do have a new superstar in women's tennis.

I applaud Emma's achievement at going through qualifiers to win the US Open & without dropping a set. She said after the match that anyone in the draw can win at the moment and I agree. In this case of this country and women's tennis, I'd say once in a half century dear. No British woman has won a major tennis tournament for 44 years. @@lowelliswell True. Just interesting how pay has gone up so much. Eg., for Wimbledon, in 1968, the female winner received £750. In 2021 it was £1,700,000. £750 then is the equivalent of about £11,000 now. Therefore the prize money at Wimbledon for female singles compared to 1968 has gone up by a factor of 154.

Once in a century we get a unicorn like Roger, perhaps she didn’t want to single out such a gem and leave out the others. A completely dominant force combined with pure artistry is super rare. One of the reasons we don’t see super athletes very often, is because it takes a monumental situation, one that gathers millions of eyeballs like the Borg McEnroe rivalry to cause the rare super athlete like Sampras or Roger to be interested in the pursuit or like the Rivalry between Watson and Nicklaus that caused massive interest in golf, dragging the other once a century unicorn, Tiger, away from other pursuits to chase golf immortality. With all the distractions and problems life presents we may never see another Tiger or Roger ever.
