The older players should appreciate having the opportunity to face such an incredible talent that I am sure reminds each and everyone of them of what inspired them to also play and compete. Her smile and her style in that now iconic red blue and yellow outfit - oh - and that plaster on the knee, was always going to make her stand out, but then and above all else that skill, the determination, the game plan, the sportsmanship, the sheer fun she brings and the class have made her a star, but the way she did it, the outsider, the grit, the towering and momentous way she did it, will go down in history and will likely never be repeated. And beyond, she seems so unaffected, so self assured and she walks into the Met Gala like she owned the place. There simply are no words.

I also think Leylah will win slams and is also a very nice young woman and special talent. This was one of those there it's almost a shame someone had to lose the match. After Emma’s wonderful success in New York, as a fellow Brit I really hope she is given time to develop and grow as a player without a stack of media pressure being put on her. Emma has incredible talent and no weaknesses in her game, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to win every single time she plays and she’s sensible enough to know that. What I would hate to see is Emma being put down in the papers if she decides to go to Indian Wells in October and loses early, or if she loses early in Australia next year. Emma has such great potential for a great career, but I think we have to support her sensibly. She’s played just 4 senior level tournaments in her young career, two of them were Grand Slams, Wimbledon where she reached the fourth round and the US Open, which, obviously, she won, but let’s not assume she’s going to win every match she plays just yet and then complain if she doesn’t. I hope we will all give her the time and space she will need to get used to life on the WTA tour, because if we give her time and space now, I have no doubt she will have every chance of reaching her potential.

You're the first person I've seen mention that she was well prepared for this victory. She's been a top junior player since she was 9 years old and people who follow grass roots tennis in the UK knew very well that one day she would burst onto the senior scene. Wimbledon was just the final stepping stone to what we see now. She's going to be a force to reckon with when she makes a final stride forward with her fitness and endurance. She's fit enough now to beat anyone but just wait until we see the finished product.

@@nelimashihrii3375 there wasn’t. She was taken to 7-5 in one set in qualifying, but the rest of her score lines look relatively smooth. She had to work for it in New York though. Every opponent was higher ranked than her in the tournament and most had far more experience of the game at the top level. Belinda Bencic, for example, was 12 in the world when Emma played her, but Emma came through by playing very well. @@tracyhodgkins7516 Her ranking was artificially low as she didn't play until the grass court season in June so her ranking was pretty much down to the 4th round in Wimbledon and the final of the challenger in Chicago as she didn't play a ranking tournament for 9 months of the year.. So covid, her education and inactivity was primarily the reason for her ranking. She did play in some 'Battle of the Brits' exhibition matches and you could clearly see that she was WAY better than 150 in the world. If she'd have been playing all year she'd have been in the top 100. Her play at Wimbledon was significantly above her ranking then (300 and something) or 150. That takes nothing away from the achievement however, she was ranked 150, she did win 3x qualifiers and she did with the title. Incredible.
