The ambassador apparently died during transport from the Enterprise to the warbird Devoras. During an investigation, Data discovered that the transporter accident was staged and surmised that T'Pel was actually alive and being held hostage by the Romulans. It was later discovered that T'Pel was in fact Sub-Commander Selok, a Romulan agent assigned to infiltrate the Federation diplomatic corps - the peace overtures and transporter malfunction carefully planned in order to facilitate her extraction. I like the comments here talking about the transporter malfunction in TMP, when Data says "This type of accident", he meant it literally, a transporter beam just "losing" all the matter and the ambassador's pattern just completely disappearing into nothing, whereas in TMP, the two beaming aboard the Enterprise had their patterns scrambled due to "a faulty module" and reassembled in a jumbled mess back on Earth when they pulled them back, dying almost immediately on rematerialisation, but then, this episode, it was no accident of course... :)

Or that doorway to other dimensions. Where you stay intact the entire trip. I had a bad dream. I was on federation station, orbiting a planet, and used the transpoter to get down to the planet. There was a malfunction. Instead of materializing on the planer I materialized in a food dispenser. Which uses the same technology. As well he should. Most Romulans throughout the entire history of Star Trek have been malicious, had ill intent toward the Federation, along with the Vulcans, and were downright deceptive. In fact, I can't remember if there were any other sentient species they did get along with and trust implicitly. That said, there were some good Romulans who did not behave in such ways. In that way, they were not unlike humans. Romulans are basically more intelligent and less ugly Ferengi, if you toned way down the Ferengi's obsession with money and the way the treated their women. It's funny though: it seems a lot of the Star Trek species, such as Klingons, Vulcans, Romulans, Ferengi, etc. all represented different extremities of humans. This would make sense, since the show is written by us. It's only natural we'd imprint our own characteristics on alien species.

@@james_ford86 Every race of star trek represents a different facet of human psycology none of them are particularly good because the point is that the reason humanity was the force trying to unite the galaxy in peace is because they represented all the facets in balance. The klingons are boastful and violent. The ferengi are greedy and cowardly, The kardasians are huberous and sadistic, The vulcans logical and unfeeling, The bijorians are rebellious and vengeful. Each race can essentially be boiled down to two traits that left unchecked creates awful behavior. Even the vulcans with their lack of emotion often do terrible things simply because it is most logical. Then they would use those stereotypes to create characters by having them stray from that architype into one of the others. A moment of bravery for a Ferengi, A vulcan who feels emotions, A bijoran who end up working with her former slaver, A klingon who learns to fight by thinking rather than simply overpowering his opponent. Notice all of these characters like Worf and Spock also were either half human or their changes only started once they were introduced to humanity.

Both he and the show misunderstand what emotion is. He obviously has feelings, they just aren't human feelings. Emotion is the low-resolution orienting network that directs our attention to keep us alive and healthy. Why wouldn't Vulcan's be able to tell lies? I know the ambassador was really romulan, but I never understood that. What makes them incapable of doing so? Data says it in this episode, and Spock says it, but Tuvok said it Voyager Vulcan could. I used to think they didn't have emotions, either. They have strong ones but adhere to their strict logic philosophy.

Is it just me, or is Picard's uniform in the transporter room lighter than Riker's? Like it's been washed too many times? And then on the bridge, it's back to red? Filmed on different days, I guess.
@TheNitroG1
@TheNitroG1 2 ай бұрын
It's kind of a gross detail about the show, but the uniforms were made of form fitting spandex that did not breath well at all. so frequently the actors would be marinating in their own sweat all day and often times the color of the uniform would end up darker in some scenes. So it could be that or a different day, or maybe just a costume change because again...they were very uncomfortable.

Here's my hot take, every infinitesimally small division of time constitutes a distinct and unique "self", and continuity of consciousness is an illusion arising from our ability to store and access memories. As such I'd consider "dying" in a transporter to be practically no different to existing from second to second. Assuming the appropriate level of technology is achievable though, I could see "duplication/replication/perfect cloning" being considered more reliably ethical than transportation, at least under certain sets of circumstances. Treating one's future self as a separate person, albeit one you're considerably more familiar with than most, is an interesting and useful perspective to explore, I find.

Quantum field theory tells us that atoms of the same species are indistinguishable: there's no way to know that we're made of the 'same' atoms as we were two seconds ago, because the question itself is as meaningless as going to the bank, withdrawing a $1 bill, and asking "now how long ago did I deposit this specific dollar? Do you do the withdrawals last-in-first-out or first-in-first-out?" Taken to its extreme, this *technically* means I can claim that we're all being replaced with a perfect copy of ourselves every 1 Planck time and it wouldn't be possible to prove me wrong. Personally, I wonder if human beings are made exclusively of matter, or if there is some yet-undiscovered life force from which the body gets ripped away when using a transporter, making it collapse dead on arrival. I don't think there's any evidence to suggest such a thing, but on the other hand I doubt we can rule it out until we actually have the technology to try it. 😅
@Jonathan32177

@@CFSworks Very interesting , As to the first part I would have to counter with the ship of theseus thought experiment. as to the second, the possibility of the "soul, or spark of life" factor has always been a plot hole consideration in the technology. In universe I always hoped a Q would address. And since the existence of a soul or unbodied consciousness has been confirmed in universe many times. It would also then beg to question . where at exactly is the mind connected to the body. is it an individual atom that leashes the soul or the collection of the whole to the physical body during transportation. How does the destruction and re construction of the physical move the metaphysical in space?
@CFSworks
@CFSworks 2 ай бұрын
@@Jonathan32177 I'm unsure if the Ship of Theseus quite applies here. With the Ship, it is possible in principle to distinguish the parts (e.g. by paying careful attention to the wood grain), so to me the thought experiment is more "does it count as 'the same' when it's undeniably different parts, but in the same arrangement, if the parts were replaced gradually?" The transporter, unless it uses some kind of lossy compression or otherwise works imperfectly, doesn't change anything: same arrangement, check. But when working with particles this tiny, "exact same particle" is just a shorter way of saying "exact same quantum numbers+state." There is no distinction between "identical" and "equivalent" in particle physics. So here, the parts are the same, the arrangement is the same, and nothing has been replaced gradually. You could march right into Engineering and lie "I have never, ever used a transporter!" and Geordi could run no test on your body that would disprove you. (Though... he might just check the logs, hah.) Interested to know more about how we've detected disembodied consciousness in the universe! The last time I checked, the vitalism vs. materialism debate was still unsettled, even though I lean toward the former camp myself. If there is definitely more to our being than just physical matter, then there absolutely would be grounds for saying "this is not Picard; this is 100% Picard's *body,* but it's a different person."
