A simple, yet one of the most important scenes in the film. Oh, to live with Calpurnia and Atticus.

I love Calpurnia. She took Scout in hand and made sure she understood her table manners when there was a guest present.

Maybe it’s been said before: Calpurnia & Scout are excellent actresses.

omg cut it off too soon!!! “That boy is your company. And if he wants to eat up that tablecloth, you let him, you hear? And if you can't act fit to eat like folks, you can just set here and eat in the kitchen!”

In the old South the guest was king. The guest in return behaved graciously. It was a a good way.

My mother gave the book to me to read after she read it. I was a kid. This was in the 1960's. And then I saw the movie. For some reason I always remembered this particular scene.

It’s to do with manners and relationship dynamics between children and children, children and adults, and children and themselves. Childhood and measuring generational differences. Also class and southern hospitality.

I like the way the innocence of the Mockingbird becomes a central theme to this story!

How do you cut off Cal giving to Scout for making fun of Walter? That is why most of us watched the clip!

I was punished, due to a bad sister and mother, but regardless I was put into a school for troubled youths. I wrote a paper on this book (To Kill A Mockingbird) as well as Lolita. Instead of commenting on my dissertation I was insulted due to the fact that it was about a younger girl with an older guy. Mind you, I was 16 so I was hardly an edge on that kind of topic. I'm happy you found this topic because it was excellent. The book and the movie both were excellent and that's a rare thing to say. Thank you.

In Alabama in the 1930s, it would be corn syrup or molasses.

You treat your guests with respect! And if your guest requests an odd item, you give it to them no question! (Unless its drug or crime related of course!)

Мальчик голодный и хочет сладкого. А девочка его не понимает. Она не была голодной никогда. В русском языке есть поговорка: " сытый голодного не разумеет" ( не понимает).

If you had any raising at all you know you should let a guest eat the table cloth if that's what they want. Just channeling Cal for you.

Sugar was an expense for poor people. If they're eating squirrels and rabbits its been a while since Walter has enjoyed a candy bar or ice cream. Hard times.
