The foam they cut off to make it level makes really good filler for inside walls that you want sound proofing on or add it in to some blown in insulation for other buildings.

This was great! I wondered how this process went. Some things I also wonder about are: what happens if the wiring in the walls ever needs to be accessed or if more wiring is needed down the road? Does it have an odor and does it need to air-out?
@TKCL
@TKCL 2 жыл бұрын
There was no odor to speak of, and if there was it went away quickly. As far as accessing the walls in the future, that is one drawback to foaming the walls completely. I'd suggest going to head and running all the wiring you could think of to begin with.

Have you gotten your house inspected for insurance credits/discounts before the structure connections are covered up. I wish I knew the name , there is some company in the coastal are named Fortified or something like that. They come in and check for seal tape on roof decking and check for connecting anchors like you have from the seal to the roof trusses. If your home have these things they rate as something like silver, bronze or gold and you get back up to half the cost of insurance for 5 years then they re-inspect. Wish I knew more, but you already know about it any way. You are thorough. House is looking fantastic

@thekelly’scountrylife that turned out great!! I’m confused about to use open cell or closed cell on roof. Can you explain why some use closed cell. Located in SC so hot humid weather
@TKCL
@TKCL Жыл бұрын
Closed cell on roof is required if you are spraying directly to a material like tin and need a vapor barrier. Open cell in southern climates is typically used if spraying to the underside of material and a vapor barrier like felt or plastic vapor barrier is used on the underside of the roofing material. Open cell does not have vapor retarding properties, closed cell foam does.

I’m new to all this….how does this foam work with moisture build up? I’ve heard of interesting things with metal buildings. Great work!
@TKCL
@TKCL 2 жыл бұрын
If going straight to metal, use closed cell foam that is also a vapor barrier. In my case I have wood decking under the metal roof and titanium vapor barrier under that. So open cell is perfectly fine. Keep in mind that it's insulated so well that the AC won't run much, that increases humidity levels in the home. Thus the reason I'm running a dehumidifier.

So did the spray foam just get sprayed directly to the backside of the roof decking? Thinking about spray foaming the underside of roof on our cmu house we are building. From what I’ve been told, if you spray foam, there is no need for a roof vent or even perforated soffits.

The vapor barrier portion of closed cell is not needed in the hot south. It's common to use open cell here and closed cell up north where that extra vapor barrier is needed.

How come you went with open cell fill vs closed cell fill?

Open cell

That's what we use in the south, no interior vapor barrier is required or closed cell. Closed cell is also triple the cost.

Are you going to spray a fire retardant over the exposed foam in your conditioned attic? Was it part of your quote? Both IRC and IBC call for it but some area's don't follow thru with the regulation of it... Just wondering..

Hadn't planned on it, the last time I tried burning the foam it wouldn't hardly stay lit. I'll have to see if it's required for me.

@@TKCL Since you enjoy watching Matt Risinger's videos look up the one he did about 4 months ago talking about how to build a better attic... I believe he even talks about spraying a retardant over the foam in his videos and how it's code... . even calls out brands you might want to use... 😉... Keep up the great work 👍

How did you get to R38?

There's calculations on the net of types of foam and thicknesses.

@TKCL I appreciate the information and will look into that. I've been trying to come up with all different kind of ways to come up with R38 in 5.5 inches. Closed cell foam was all I could come up with. My wife and I have watched most of your build videos. We hope to break ground on our post frame in a few months.

Did I hear you say open cell foam?? I really hope it’s not. Talking from bad experiences with open cell. It holds water and never dries out no matter what you do. It will easily grow mold it at moisture and or due hits it. I will only use closed cell foam from my bad experience with open cell. Just letting you know. My mistake cost me over 100k in rebuilding the entire house from open cell foam failure.

Are you up north where a interior vapor barrier is required and constant interior moisture problems occur due to indoor heating? Open cell is the foam of choice in the south because no interior vapor barrier is required, our homes have to breathe. I am also installing a humidistat controlled ERV for humidity control. A huge problem is that people install this super efficient insulation and don't realize the risks of it causing your hvac to NOT run. That causes high humidity problems and a ERV, HRV or dehumidifier is required. Not having your hvac running due to insulation efficiency is actually a bad thing.

@@TKCL no vapor required. NC on the coast. Water damage occurred During the build process and the builder closed everything off and ran huge commercial dehumidifiers to dry everything out. It did not work. Stayed wet and molded right way. Building inspector condemned the build. So had to tear it down and start over. Builders insurance did not cover it. Still fighting in the courts 7 years later. Anyways. Very nice home you will home soon. Just figured I would let you know what happened to me on open cell foam.

Doesn't sound like it was the foams fault, sounds like a contractor neglected to install everything correctly. Closed cell would have trapped the water and caused rot. They both have their places depending on the climate. Open cell is by far the foam of choice in my area.
