Hi Lyndsey , I have fairly regular tweets with Mike Scott and gave him my version of the meaning of this glorious song, that it’s great in life to have somebody to help you when things are bad and can see the bigger picture ie I saw the crescent,you saw the whole of the moon. I asked if I could have the song for a day. Mike replied ‘you’re wrong, but nice interpretation’ and gave me the song for a day , so I’ve owned it, for a day

Unicorns and cannonballs, palaces and piers Trumpets, towers and tenements Wide oceans full of tears Flags, rags ferryboats Scimitars and scarves Every precious dream and vision Underneath the stars, yes, you climbed on the ladder With the wind in your sails You came like a comet Blazing your trail too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon

Then they wouldn't have all their influences. I don't think they would have stood out without the their magpie appraoach years later
@ghostscantkill3 жыл бұрын
@@jackjude perhaps you're correct. But imagine if they released the exact same records starting around 1985 or 1986. That's the two stand out years for synth, and alternative music that hadn't been played on radio as much previously. That's the context I was speaking in.
@jackjude3 жыл бұрын
@@ghostscantkill to me they sound like a band influenced by the 80s rather than a 80's band. I would say though the high point for synth was a good few years earlier - the turn of the 80's; With Kraftwerk, Yazoo, Ultravox, Human League, Gary Numan, Soft Cell, OMD's best work.
@ghostscantkill3 жыл бұрын
@@jackjude as I mentioned the context. Think fantasy football. Put aside reality, and the fact you feel they sound like a band influenced by the 80's, and not an actual 80's band. Again. Synth bands didn't get broad, and consistent air play on mega radio stations until some time in 1984 really (in the U.S. anyway). But they really started getting it good in 85', 86'. Yes. Synth bands definitely were getting lots of play, and attention from MTV from the beginning, but that's MTV not radio as I mentioned. I'm understanding what you're writing, but it doesn't appear you see my points.

@@alanjohnson4637 It wasn't an 'interview'- it was a hijack! He was there to play music, not to join a debate and be personally and publicly attacked by a rude, pompous git. Look up Frightened Rabbit and The Smith Street Band and tell me they don’t write songs like this anymore. Unreal bands

Interesting, I'm the same age and I'm more a kid of the 90's. I do love 80's stuff, but never bought records or saw bands at that time.

Was a young man in the 80s, listened to a LOT of radio…NEVER heard this song when it came out…about 3 years ago I heard it for the first time on XM First Wave…couldn’t get enough of it then…still can’t…GREAT song/message…

I have always been impressed at how Brandon Flowers and the Killers give justice to the songs they cover. I view him as a guy who loves the 80s esp. on the new wave stuff. I recall he had a collaboration with Bernard Summer and New Order for a track which was absolutely fantastic!

How can a band from America sound so British. Great band!!!!!
@zibbiw3 жыл бұрын
Exactly!
@bollox6798 күн бұрын
The same way many British bands like Zeppelin, the Stones, the Bee Gees, Def Leppard and many others sound like there American it all depends on what your influences are what you listen to growing up.

I pictured a rainbow You held it in your hands I had flashes But you saw the plan I wandered out in the world for years While you just stayed in your room I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon! The whole of the moon! You were there at the turnstiles With the wind at your heels You stretched for the stars And you know how it feels To reach too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon! I was grounded While you filled the skies I was dumbfounded by truths You cut through lies I saw the rain-dirty valley You saw Brigadoon I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon! I spoke about wings You just flew I wondered, I guessed, and I tried You just knew I sighed But you swooned I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon! The whole of the moon! With a torch in your pocket And the wind at your heels You climbed on the ladder And you know how it feels To get too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon! The whole of the moon! Unicorns and cannonballs, Palaces and piers, Trumpets, towers, and tenements, Wide oceans full of tears, Flags, rags, ferry boats, Scimitars and scarves, Every precious dream and vision Underneath the stars Yes, You climbed on the ladder With the wind in your sails You came like a comet Blazing your trail Too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon!
