Travel guide to Australia for Simon and Martina: 1) Internet will continue to be crap for another decade or so. I suggest investing in a carrier pigeon for effective, long-distance communication. 2) Our coffee culture is confusing and admittedly uses some strange terms, but it is also rich in flavour and origin. Australia has a large population of European immigrants and so our coffee culture has a lot of Italian and Turkish influence. 3) Some post-6pm activities you can engage in are - food; food; food...and more food. Australia has a MAJOR restaurant culture and we have great food from all different types of cuisines. You guys should definitely indulge in Thai, Vietnamese, Lebanese and Italian cuisine when you're here. It's truly indulgent and mouth-watering. 4) Yes, we all lift. Yes, it's because there's nothing to do after 6pm but eat and exercise (which is probably why all the guys are jacked). I suggest you do go running when you're here as we have some really picturesque running routes in the Bay areas (Sydney). Love from a Native Sydney-sider :)

Running along the Brisbane river or along the coast of Morton Bay is pretty good too... Except in summer when it's so hot you'd probably melt... Like, right now... No, seriously, it's like 30 degrees outside and so humid that your sweat does nothing to cool you down.

Tridi Rox Have you been to Korea? They're used to the FASTEST internet in the world. There are LOADS of countries that have faster internet speeds than us too! Plus, you're right next to the Australian internet hub, so of course it's going to be faster!

Sex bar is a gay term. Its a reference to the common occurrence of gay males 'cruising' for sex in public toilets.

"it's not a sex bar!" = "stop fucking around in there!" also... it's melbourne, so there would be a lot of buff and attractive because you gotta keep up appearances lol so snooty there. Also, I recommend visiting adelaide during march because there's a lot of art related stuff going on, art and music type festival stuff. It's all pretty cool.

Next time you go to Australia, try vegemite. But PLEASE don't cake it on the bread/toast like other people, you have to put butter on as well, and put on a moderate amount of vegemite. Someone from Australia really needs to do a video showing Canadians/Americans/etc. how to put vegemite on toast.

Purple Pandicorn Yeah I think the ideal is to have way more butter than bread (or crumpet - vegemite and butter is awesome on crumpets!). Although in saying that like QueenEtna my younger sister used to just eat vegemite straight from those tubey things you could get it in...I'm with the majority though, with vegemite the golden rule is always LESS IS MORE.

Hahaha OMG guys this is amazing. I'm an aussie and watching this, and its absolutely gold, and the sex bar line made me laugh so hard. Good work :D In regards to the internet thought, your right about your roaming packages. The net is a lot better if you use it in hotels or Internet cafes or have phone data plans. Our download speed is pretty good but our upload speed is terrible. Also you can get iced coffee with just ice, it just depends on where you are. Oh and shops do stay open later on Thursdays usually. Though if your near a place called Strathfield (its in Sydney) shops there are usually open pretty late. Seriously though I'm glad you guys enjoyed it here, hope to have you back soon :D

About Australian coffee culture: Aussie coffee is awesome, but Americano's are not a thing here. A long black is the closest you'll get to one, and it's one shot coffee to two shots hot water. A short black is one shot coffee and one shot coffee and one shot hot water. If you're coming to Melbourne, which has one of the best coffee cultures in the world, getting a short or long black is a total waste. You've GOT to get a single origin roasted latte, or a brew if you're into black coffee. Also, wtf are you doing in Starbucks?! That place is awful! You've got to go to Hardware Lane or one of the side-street cafe's to get a decent coffee!
@adamholczer
@adamholczer 9 жыл бұрын
Coffee culture is big in Sydney. Original northern beaches kid and coffee snob :( There is definitely a different term for your cup compared to USA and Korea. It goes by mainly Italian terms such as; cappuccino (Everyone knows this one), latte (Creamy milk), mocha (Chocolate), flat white (cappuccino without the froth), short black/espresso, long black (double shot), macchiato (short black with a little bit of milk), Piccolo (macchiato with more milk. Like a small latte). These are the most common ones.

Shops close at 5pm everyday in Australia. Every Thursday we have late night in shopping centres till 9pm and every Friday is late night in the city till 9pm. I'm living in Perth for 3 years now and it's sort of like wanting to spend more time with the family, especially for working parents. When my family first moved here, we were so used to having shops close really late at night in Singapore that we were shocked that shops closed on Sundays too.
@Amaterasux3
@Amaterasux3 11 жыл бұрын
I'm from Australia and I agree that it kind of sucks to have the shops close around 6pm but usually major retail outlets such as kmart and myers in the city would have longer trading hours, also pointing out that we have a thing called 'late night' where most shops generally stay open until 9pm on thursdays (which is very convenient!). Usually in the city there are heaps of active and lively people but in suburban areas there's none of that!

Things I thought while watching this: Our internet is slow? Like I know that things don't load in a second but I always just assumed it was like that everywhere? 6pm is early for stores to close? Most retail shops close at 6 but on Thursdays they close a few hours later because of late night.

Katrina Wall 6 pm is waaaaaayyyyyy too early for stores to close.. In Indonesia, shopping malls open from 9 am to 9-10 pm and sometimes we even have midnight sales (which I never see here in Melbourne) where the shopping mall will open until like 2 am.. Restaurants usually open from 8-9 am till 10 pm and cafes will open till midnight or even later.. But, Indonesian internet is like 5x slower than Aussie's..

I'm Australian, and while I was in Canada, I asked my boyfriend to get me an iced coffee. He got one for me, I looked at it and those sad little ice cubes, and knew it was missing something. I tried to drink it, then told my boyfriend it was yucky because there was no ice cream, he took a sip and threw it straight in the bin. I figure Simons experience was Australia getting revenge for me.

Hahaha I love you guy so much :) Yeah the small button on the toilet is for pee and the big flush is usually for poop, we don't have the opposite water flow we have just a down flush so it's big and loud lol and in the city people live conveniently so a lot of people exercise and yeah our shops close around 5:30pm-6:00pm except on late night shopping which changes per state, or for example in the suburbs it's thursday late night shopping but in the city it's friday late night shopping. As for the sex bars I honestly don't know, my guess is a bar that has prostitutes or something? yeah we have fairly bad internet speeds and it costs a FORTUNE. My god we are so expensive. I don't know how we do it! Australia is so weird because it changes from suburb to city and from city to state. We speak British English or a similar form of British english for example we do all differ in this: America/Canada = candy, Britain = sweets, Australia = lollies :) hope that helped with your questions

Ok ahah, I'm Australian and the whole 'sex bar' thing isn't a very widely known place. It's sort of an 'underground' system where an abandoned public toilet is used for people just to hook up, get some, whatever you feel like calling it. So I'm guessing the Angry Aussie was trying to show how a toilet should not take as long as a 'sex bar' for obvious reasons. If you've ever seen people write numbers on the stall walls, it's very similar. The colour of the eggs, the orange yokes are usually laid by free range chickens that had a large living space, while the more yellow yokes were laid by chickens stuck in a box or cage until they die. :)

Why is everyone so perplexed with the term sex bar? It's a regular bar, just a lot of people hook up in the bathrooms, which is why he would shout it in a bathroom, it's normal to take a while in a bar/clubs bathroom.... srsly.... not that hard to put together. Also theirs a good chance the kid who yelled it was british.. or a new zealander

Haha in Australia you pay for your internet. When you have reached your cap, the internet goes really slow. If you want more internet and faster internet, you pay more. Yup, Australia puts big emphasis on sports and exercise. Every thing here sounds about right haha, yea, our toilets. But I must say, the sex bar one, I have never heard about. :)

I noticed different coloured egg yolks when I visited the US. Australia have orange yolks, the US have yellow. I looked it up. The consensus seems to be that "Richer-colored egg yolks are more likely to come from free-range hens. Free-range hens have the opportunity to eat more pigmented foods, and the pigment is then transferred to the yolk. But the macronutrients (protein and fat) remain the same regardless of yolk color".

i don't drink coffee but I quiet like the hot chocolate from Gloria Jeans.. well it actually depend on the coffee makers if they could make the milk or the coffee correctly and not burnt it (I know coz my mum works at a coffee shop here in Perth and she teaches me how to make coffee, I still can't really make one though :-P) I like Dome's hot chocolate best.... (my mum works at Dome before) the first time I tried hot chocolate was at Dome and since it has been my fave....

Sex bars --- It's a hang over from the time when homosexuality was illegal, and to avoid being caught in a car, men met in public toilets for sex. No doubt your angry impatient person was gay.

There was a while there when the internet at my house (I live in Melbourne) was statistically worse than Africa. Well done Australia. Also as a Barista (fancy word for "Professional Coffee Maker"), I'd be more than happy and would LOVE to teach you about our coffee culture! It's crazier in Melbourne than it is elsewhere, but I hear the other states are catching up. :P

Hey from Aus :))))) The internet thing just depends on what you have and what you're paying for! 3G here is slow especially in the city but my wifi is incredibly fast! Also did you know that wifi was actually invented by Aussies? To get ice coffee that actually just has ice in it you have to go to MacDonalds or what us aussies call "maccas". Australia has a huge emphasis on sport, our sportsman are like Gods! Although personally I'm not a sports fan so i don't really understand it hahah! I hope your trip here was fabulous and you come back soon!! Also good job with pronouncing melbourne correctly ;)

I know I'm late.. but YES PERTH! short black(esspresso) - 1 shot of coffee long black - 2 shots of coffee, usually with a little bit of water and yeahhhh, iced coffee comes with ice cream, usually they would ask with or without ice cream though :)

All coffees start from a "coffee shot" out of the espresso machine. Then the addition and type of milk changes what coffee it is. Short black: Straight shot, nothing else Long black: Shot + extra hot water. Should be done properly so the crema is still on top. Cappuccino: Shot + frothed milked with chocolate sprinkled on top Caffe Latte: Shot + slightly more frothy milk. No chocolate. Often served in a glass Flat White: (An Australian invention!) Shot + minimally frothed milk Hope this helps!!

Yes living expenses are high in Perth. I just got from Seoul and there everyone refuses to pay 1000 ($1) for a bottle of water, but more like .50c from 7 Eleven. Here it's expected to up to cost in excess of 3000($3).

original "iced coffee" in austria/germany also has one or two scoops of ice cream inside. i was shocked when i ordered an iced coffee in starbucks a few years ago (there weren't any starbucks in vienna when i was young) and they put ice cubes inside. later i realized that that's how iced coffee is served in lots of other countries xD

iced coffee is different everywhere, in the city everything it make fancier i guess :P but say if you went to bankstown or strathfield or burwood (sydney) then youll get an overwhelming amount of chinese/korean ethnicity like shops restaurants and all that, green acre and auburn are mostly muslim, canterburry and maquarie are mostly english or european, leichhardt is nick named "little italy" because it has a lot of italian or french or greek people. this is all due to the giant migration thing.

Hi Simon and Martina! i was just watching your video on Korean stereotypes on foreigners and i was just wondering what types of lessons/anti-stereotypes (for lack of a better word) have you tried to impose on your students or other Korean friends? Have you tried to educate or inform them about how these stereotypes are not necessarily true such as the one about homosexuality?

Short black is a shot of coffee (an espresso), long black is a shot of coffee with hot water (like brewed coffee I'm pretty sure, although I've never personally tried either), flat white is coffee with heated milk no foam, latte is essentially the same as a flat white but in a different glass with a bit of foam and more milk, cappuccino is a coffee with frothed milk and chocolate powder. We don't reallydo 'americanos' unless you go to one of our three Starbucks. Iced coffees and chocolates differ depending on where you get them; American brands (like MacDonalds or Starbucks) tend to make them with just ice cubes plonked in, but most Aussie chains and cafes will either mix or blend with ice cream and milk (essentially a Starbucks Frappuccino, but a lot of places just stir a shot of coffee in with 3/4 ice cream and some milk).

haha you guys only experienced the city from the sounds of things so it makes sense you'd see a lot of people exercising, the city is very different from other areas, like the one I live in is very heavily populated by people from Asian countries and nearly all the restaurants and stores are catered to that :3 And iced coffees vary depending where you go, you can get a normal iced coffee that is just coffee iced maybe check with the people next time which version it is :) oh and you definitely should come to Melbourne again since I missed you last time you were here and I really enjoy your videos and your personalities.
