Basically if you're a Muslim anywhere here's a solution: instead of meat just eat seafood.. But do your research on where you can get halal food routinely BEFOREHAND. Be organised. Be smart. As a muslim who has been to many countries where halal food hasn't always been available fish has been my saviour and I'm pretty chill with not eating other meats till I can get my hand on some halal ones (but I understand that may not be your case). Anyways fighting y'all xDDD

Im certainly no expert, but I've noticed that where I'm staying in Japan (kumamoto) is pretty good for Muslims (can't really speak for food) but like for example, in one of my classes there are like 3 students who are Muslim and have to pray at a certain time of day that happens clashes with the start of class and the teacher is totally cool and accepting about it and the students get to class 20-25 mins late every week and there are no issues :D

I am still shocked with Korean religious statistics, because the majority of Koreans I know are religious Christians/Catholics, and some are very hardy followers. Also, I have never met a Korean Buddhist or irreligious person. Interesting!

Cindy Le True, even among kpop idols, they all seem to be Christians/Catholics one (Always thanking god for this and that). I guess they are just more expressive. I know that for buddhist, there is no need to talk about Buddha really. Oh, and the only idol I know who's buddhist is Sohee from WG.

You are probably not living in Korea. In fact most Koreans living a in FOREIGN country are christian. I also only know christian Koreans.
@AzyisaCrazyDaisy9 жыл бұрын
Jason Lee Not sure where you got that from but Christians are suppose to share their faith with others. It's called The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20) and because Jesus directly said it to his followers it's pretty hard to interpret it as anything else. So yeah, Christianity is fundamentally a proselytizing religion.
@AzyisaCrazyDaisy9 жыл бұрын
***** Thank you! Christians aren't trying to be annoying and in your face, although I am sure there are some self-righteous ones out there. If Christians share their beliefs with you it is because they care about you and they don't want you to end up in hell, whether you believe in such a place or not--it's a very real place for Christians. Wanting to save their fellow man is a practice of compassion.

I am muslim from Indonesia. I was lived in Suwon for 8nmonths and yes, cooking helps a lot in term of food! Culturally speaking, my Korean friend are very tolerant and respectful, I came along together while they were drinking, no I was not drinking but as you say we still can feel the togetherness without drinking. In fact most of them become so protective, they told another college that i would not have a drink and remind me not to did so. While I was fasting during Ramadhan they were cutely worried and asked me to immediately breakfast when the sun went down at 7.30pm. they are awesome! Oh hey have fun in Bali, congrats on the anniversary, and don't forget to visit Ubud. Thank you simon and martina! you guys pretty much sum up what I experienced here. Fyi, I'm in Gangneung for my master degree right now. The most common question is "what that thing are you wearing on your head?" and "isn't it hot?" So I need to explain that it's called hijab and I need to use it because of my religion. Another problem is when my other friend is a muslim too and she doesn't wear hijab. Again, I need to explain that it somehow depends on the people do they want to wear it or not. Getting stated at is like an everyday meal for me. Plus I live in university dorm, when the menu is prok the last thing I can eat is just rice and kimchi. Or when it's fried rice with ham, then you got no choice beside to buy something outside (even if you pay for your meal when you're entering dorm, hing). Because I don't live in seoul, it is hard to find halal food. Beside that the people around me more likely understand after I explained it to them. They even help me to know whether this food I can eat or not, is it containing pork or not. So that's it, just want to share my experience being an muslim here in Korea. :D

My simple answer is that some people question themselves about life and its origins which is one of the greatest mysteries of our existence and find an answer in religion. And on the other hand you can see religion as a means of teaching discipline and ethics until the person develops the ability to understand why, morally, those ethics are right. Now when I say this it totally makes religion seem like a human artefact but if you think about it there is nothing that disproves religion and nothing that proves it for sure... Even in the grand debate of big bang vs god's creation both are as irrational as the other. Religion is a gamble I guess and a chosen conviction that has many virtues for many people and I think this deserves respect (and it should be a mutual one ofc).

I'm a Muslim and about 5 years ago I went for an International School Programme at Chungnam National Uni in Deajeon. The school was very helpful in helping me get foods that I can eat. Though it was a lot of vegetarian food, I didn't mind much as it tasted good. Those morning meals they provided in the dormitories, I just stuck with rice, kimchi and seaweed - not much of a problem as I quite enjoyed eating my kimchi. All of the ajummas at the cafeteria were very nice and helpful in giving me loads of what I can eat. As for the hijab, accept for this one time a drunk guy lightly tugged on mine asking me if I wasn't hot (It was summer), people were pretty cool with it. A sauna we went to even let me wear my own long trousers instead of the shorts they gave. The bottom line is to respect another's culture and definitely they will respect yours back.

Hi Guys, thank you for making this video. I am a muslim and exactly a year ago I went to korea. Well it's a dream came true for a kpop fan haha. So yea, should I give some tips? I should I guess... so the 1st thing to do before going to korea is to bring food for your need for 2 days atleast or might as well search "halal restaurants in korea" mostly they are in Itaewon (went to bombay palace 2×. Should I say it was yummy there. I really cant feel the religious barrier there in korea so its kinda fun for a muslim like me). 2: if you're already in korea and are struggling with halal food, don't worry you can atleast go to any restaurant and order any seafood dish (went to skool food in Myeongdong and we ordered seafood kimbab and bibimbap. Thumbs up for the fast service) 3: there's no religious barriers there (probably maybe some but I can't say it because i didn't experience it), I can ensure you if you go to myeongdong you can probably see some muslims wearing hijab there surrounded by other people and there is no misunderstanding (went there few times, and I can see many muslim foreigners including me hahaha) 4: there's halal kebab in Myeongdong (you guys should try) 5: recommended to try "Jamba Juice" (its freaking addictive and I'm currently craving here ㅠㅡㅠ) I went to "Sulbing" once and because we were the only muslim (wearing hijab) eating the deserts, all of the customers there were looking at us and I responded with a smile. I know its kinda awkward but it's kinda fun. Fun? Why? Beacuse "where else can I experience that" hahahaha. Lastly, I can ensure you guys it's fun to be in korea even if you're a Muslim and wearing hijab. Don't worry about what others think about us but instead enjoy what you're doing. AND don't worry about halal food you can always google it and maybe order some seafood. Of course be positive about it and enjoy. I hope this helps :)

And forgot to mention the interactions with koreans, : some of them do speak english so its easier to interact with them. But some cant communicate with english the 2 best things to do to encounter this 1: know how to speak korean. Even if you know some korean words it might be useful. 2: use gesture and pictures to describe what you want to buy or ask. I used both method last year and it works. so yea hahaha

I am vegan and I use the "vegan passport". It translates what veganism is into about 70 languages. Though, sometimes people don't read it and I get milk or eggs in my food. I am about 50% certain I am going to move to Korea to teach next year and I have no idea what I will do about eating vegan. I don't want to eat fish sauce or meat broth/fat in my food. Last time I went to Korea I wasn't vegan, so it was much easier. :/

Elyce Sandri We made a video about Loving Hut which is a vegan/vegetarian chain in Korea, but honestly the big problem for vegans/halal food is that the concept of NOT eating something doesn't really make sense to a lot of old fashion Korean people so they might think "it's not a big deal if there is some pork in this dish". Stick to the "I have an allergy" rather than "I don't like this" if you want to make sure.

Im like a born and raised Australian and I've been a vegetarian for almost a year now. Honestly there are difficulties in finding decent vegetarian food here even though it's western and so super multicultural. I live about half an hour to an hour away from the city(Sydney) and I feel like that's where more of the vegetarian and vegan restaurants are, there and eastern suburbs/beaches. As a student it's also really really difficult because I buy basically all my own food, and work casually so on weeks that I don't get paid much it's a real struggle to even buy lunch. My school has one specifically vegetarian wrap and one pasta salad amongst the whole menu that I can eat aside from chips., packet or hot. After school/on weekends when I go out to eat locally, my options are honestly just subway sandwiches or Lebanese gozleme or pide (and then like again hot chips from anywhere else, but beware the chicken salt). Had no idea how difficult it'd be to find affordable vegetarian food here, I cannot imagine how difficult it'd be in Korea or like other countries with meat based cultural food.

I am a muslim and a hijabi and i visited Korea for about a week last summer. First of all i was amazed by the reaction of everyone around in the way they didnt react at all, like i didnt get any kind of looks that you'd expect to get in a country with such little muslim population. As for the food, we went as a group from university and we just ate A LOT of sea food and vegetarian food. We only had korean food once or twice but we went to Italian restaurants on daily basis and the restaurant staff who were all koreans were more than happy to hold off the bacon or alchohol or whatever was in the dish that we couldn't eat. I always tell everyone i would walk around in the streets and forget that i am a hijabi or that i looked different in any way. All the love to korea ❤️❤️❤️

It is our own initiative to do this so you cant say we all will accidentally eat pork there. Those who take one extra caution step will do better in avoiding it.
@Seongolll9 жыл бұрын
Well once I was at a gimbap place and I said dwaeji aniyo a couple of times and they said got it. And when they hand me the gimbap I saw that it had ham in it, so i said in Korean that it has pork in it. But the guy who works there asked me "Is ham pork?", so you see you can eat pork by mistake. It's not that I don't care about it, please don't come to conclusions without knowing me.
@MichelleBieberable9 жыл бұрын
Selin Göl Some ham are halal. The guy just didn't know ham could also be haram. The easiest thing to do is just ask for no meat at all. Not just specify it to pork.

Just came back from holiday in seoul. Yes, the main difficulty got to be about halal food. I only went to itaewon once for my 9 days trip. i went to yeoksam just to experience korean bbq at yang good restaurant for halal lamb. I may restricted from alcohol and pork but since im in seoul, i need a taste of local food. Therefore, my option is seafood or go vegetarian. If you are not sure or confident if the food source is free from alcohol and pork, my suggestions you got to bring canned food or noodle packs from back at home. 😊 i love seoul.. went for winter and summer.. will come back for autumn or spring..

Thanks for this interesting video! I've been wanting to travel to Korea for a while now, and you guys helped with insights to a few of my questions! (As a practicing Muslim living in a Western country, I tend to rely on Pescaterian, Vegetarian and sometimes even Vegan diets to get by :) )
@purplebutterfly11109 жыл бұрын
The only thing you can't eat as a Muslim is pork and any other meat should be slaughtered in the right way making it halal but fish and all other food is okay as long as it's not cooked with meaty products Being a Muslim in Toronto is okay it's like there are restaurants everywhere. But nothing like being Muslim in Cairo where you can have McDonalds lol
@eatyourkimchi9 жыл бұрын
purplebutterfly1110 See, this is where we were confused. You can't have alcohol either, right? Does that mean you can't have vanilla extract, because it's made of alcohol? And in that case can you not eat a lot of Western desserts, because they use vanilla extract? I'm sorry if that's a silly question. It was something we read when we were doing research.
@purplebutterfly11109 жыл бұрын
We can have vanilla extract lol I haven't heard that we can't but the point that alcohol and other drugs are not allowed is that it shuts off your brain and the bad outweighs the benefits of alcohol
@Mina-qr2nb9 жыл бұрын
Eat Your Kimchi Actually it's fine for Muslims to eat stuff that has vanilla extract in it, but some people might not feel comfortable eating it, though I have yet to come across a Muslim who has not eaten Western desserts, etc. A lot of Muslims also believe that gelatin (which sometimes comes from pigs) isn't allowed either and thus they don't eat candy and stuff that contains geletin, but it's allowed because it's not made directly from pig meat/pork. Generally all Muslims eat stuff that contains geletin but then again there are some who prefer not to. More for me then! Lol

Eat Your Kimchi yeah technically that's right- for example I'm a muslim in germany and a lot of people try to avoid gummy bears because they are made out of pork gelatin. I would never ever think of eating pork and I call myself a muslim and practice islam but I have also found that drinking alcohol or eating chicken which wasn't cut 'halal' isn't that wrong (in my opinion and ofc my parents')

I went to korea last year and to be honest they just stare out of curiosity you know? They were staring at me and asked about my headscarves and thought it was pretty and then again they stared at my European friends So I feel like there is not really a negative attitude towards hijab just the curiosity of being a foreigner. Also I must say I am really white so they are always confused as to where I am from 😂

Abeer Ahmed hello im a Muslim living in Seoul for 2 years now , recently there are so many Muslim female students studying and living in Seoul so a girl wearing hijab has become really common sight in here. plus Korean people are very respectful of other religions and i agree with the other person who answered before, that if they ask or stare its just because they are curious and would like to get to know your culture more

Thank you for posting this. I'm going to share this to my hoobaes who are gonna study in Korea this autumn. About the food and grilling culture. A muslim can eat any vegetables or seafood (yes, all underwater creatures are halal) and grill it?(if they have ) and join the fun. Our teachings are not to suffer people. I've been in Japan 2 years and I think that's about what like other Japanese muslims done. And the side of praying, one can just pray at a clean place as long it faces the kiblat. Again thank you for posting this EYK

I swear I've been a huge fan of Simon and Martina since 2012 they're the ones who actually got me into kpop for as much as I did. That was through their kpop music Mondays and I really miss those :c. I don't think its coz there aren't any new songs coming out coz Big Bang finally made their comeback and a lot of other bands have released new mv's. So I really wish they would bring them back, although if there's a specific reason why they're not doing them then I understand. I still love all of your videos and laugh so hard every time I do

Maria Rodriguez They received a huge amount of hate from kpop fans. A ridiculous amount. So why would they continue reviewing kpop when they can't be honest in their reviews (Ex. Giving a song/band a bad review, bringing up problems with the kpop industry, or making jokes) without receiving a huge amount of backlash?

Is the number of Jews in Korea smaller than the number of muslims? Are there any synagogues in Korea? Are there any kosher foods in Korean and Jewish foods?
@PinKpAndAs19 жыл бұрын
I don't know statistically wise but I think there is probably less. I have looked and looked for a synagogue to go to and found that (apparently, I'm not %100 on this) there is only one in the whole country. It's in Seoul near Itaewon. They have a store in the same place to buy Kosher products. But other than that I have not been able to find much else at all

Eat Your Kimchi I need your help! There's a MERS outbreak in South Korea, and my mother really was looking forward to going to Korea to see her family, because she's hasn't seen them since she was a kid. My whole family is totally upset and tense after not spending money for a couple of years just to go on the trip, and sad to hear that the airports will not give us refund on our tickets too. So is it okay if you can give us your inside perspective on whether we should actually go and risk the sickness or stay and lose the money we saved! I know its a weird and scary question, but I'm sure this will help other people who have a similar predicament like mines, since Korea is da bomb for a summer vacation. If you can answer this I would be very very grateful!
@whataboutcaesar19 жыл бұрын
Superduperscribble Go on your trip have a great time and don't worry about it too much, the South Korean government is taking aggressive precautions, just remember to throughly wash your hands regularly inc. before eating and touching the face, wear a mask, but washing hands is important! The American centre for Disease Control has NOT advised people to avoid traveling to South Korea! so have a great time in Korea and remember not to lick any sick people
@nildaalvarado90269 жыл бұрын
Superduperscribble you should really go on your trip. I have a lot of friends that went back for the summer break and i keep in contact with them about the issues and they said you should be fine. I have friends all over south korea so seriously go have fun and encourage your mother to enjoy her time and see her family! Family is important and it is really hard to stay away from them for a long time, TRUST ME on that one! I really hope to hear that you guys went and enjoy your time. If you are really worried wear a mask and remember sometimes if you over sanitize then you actually kill your fighting bacteria for your immune system and make it easier to get sick! Have fun!!!!!!!! :) :D
@jaychoi49739 жыл бұрын
Superduperscribble I know lots of government officials and such have said that it's perfectly safe to travel to Korea (e.g. CDC, UN, SK government) but as someone living in Korea right now, I will tell you that a widespread panic is spreading through the public. Many rumors have flown in the news reports about the irresponsibility of the government, the lackluster actions of the infected and the lax mandatory quarantine rules, how the health officials in place are incompetent, etc. Since the CDC and the UN only can respond based on official SK government reports, of course they will repeat that travel is safe, and that quarantine is unnecessary. But as the number of potentially infected people increases (last I checked 1500+), the number of infected increases (100+), and the government veil of calm dissipates, the public is increasingly cautious of using public transportation and going to hospitals. The amount of road traffic has increased and lots of people are avoiding shopping, instead using delivery for meals and groceries. My advice: come. I honestly think the risk of infection is miniscule. I also think the public is overreacting, but I do agree that some more government intervention would've been nice. Buy hand sanitizer when you land (a lot of convenience stores will be sold out, be aware) and bring facial masks (again, sold out but these can pass through airport security). Go wherever you want, but do so with the mindset of a clean freak. Save travels!
