TOEIC!! I wonder if it's the same in Korea as it is in Japan? In Japan a lot of Japanese people study specifically for the TOEIC and get really great scores, but they actually can't speak English hardly at all because they never practiced their speaking. My husband Jun has been to interviews where people with near perfect TOEIC scores would be asked to speak English and they just can't... like at all. o_o But that doesn't matter too much because it's all about that paper image yo! Yay Japan.... Everything else sounds (as expected) pretty much the same as Japan! :D Actually, since I wanted to marry my husband before he graduated college, and since I have a more prestigious job than he's likely to get, my MIL like bombarded me with questions like, "How can you possibly like him?!" "He doesn't even have a job!" "Why would you EVER marry someone like him?!" as if money and his job is the only thing women should care about in a relationship. That was probably the most offensive thing someone has ever asked me in Japan. I totally wanted to go King Kong in their living room after she said that. So angry! -Rachel

You can't help but notice certain differences between every country's dating habits. I don't know a whole lot about contemporary Japan or Korea, I'm a grad student for history, but then at the same time some of it is so similar between Japan, Korea, here in the States, as well as the information being listed by people of other nations here in the comments. It seems like despite all the cultural differences we have the whole human race is looking for relatively the same type of things in the people they want to spend their lives with. We all just want to find someone who makes us happy and build a family, money/work is important but people can't get to hung up on who graduated from where. I have to believe that because no one even here in America has heard of the college I'm getting my degree from lol. I'm a big fan of yours by the way.

First of all, omg it's Rachel and Jun and Simon and Martina, two of my favorite youtube couples. Secondly, the scoring system in Japan IS the same, my buddy in Japan just took it this week! He said that 500 is the lowest you can get without passing, 800 is his ideal score (it might vary by person!), and 990 is the highest. Hope this helps if someone hasn't already answered, hahaha :)

I always liked guys who were tall dark and handsome physically but found while dating I was MUCH more attracted to someone who kept me mentally stimulated. Someone smart and who I could have great conversations with. I married my best friend three years ago(Met him nine years ago) and he is my height(Im a decently tall girl at five foot nine inches) and funny enough not what I would have considered my physical type(Though I am physically attracted to him of course). But he is my best friends and super smart and we have so much in common. I think everyone has physical ideals but only superficial people will hold out for someone who is physically attractive but has the personality of a fish.

Where I live it's really hard to get accepted into an art school. No one looks down on it, quite the opposite. Block B's Zico studied art in Japan. He seems to be a very intelligent and creative person. Side note: "Rain does it anyways" had me in stitches! ;)

There's also an art highschool called Yeawon art highschool :). They send the most students to Seoul University(which is considered the best in the korean society) even more than any science, technology schools. Also sunwha, kaywon and sejong are famous art schools which are really hard to get in. Korean school art theseday, mostly until high school, are too competitive and it can't be really considered creative, (well because of the entry exam) but nobody can really look down at them. Glad that people never look down anymore just because they're an art major :)

So we now know many Korean women have ridiculous highly almost laughable standards in a mate but what about on the flip side? Do Korean men have the same in women?
@yakurimoe
@yakurimoe 10 жыл бұрын
From my experience and what I've seen, men get just as ridiculous, but it's actually a cultural thing than something specific to both genders. Women should be just as pretty, smart (aka good grades, good uni), cute, good cook, fashionable, thin, want to have kids etc etc etc. The good thing is that usually once they mature and get off that kind of mentality they start dating reasonably. The girls saying they prefer looks over personality are obviously still immature. I think it's downplayed a lot more for men though because culture-wise it's still extremely patriarchal and it's usually considered the woman's fault if they're not in a good relationship. She's with a successful man, but they are having problems? She's so lucky why is she causing him trouble, what's wrong with her. Or, she's with a not so well-off man? Can't she do any better, why doesn't she put more effort in her beauty, what's wrong with her. It's a lose-lose situation. (Wish I was exaggerating this crap)

Before KPOP, I had decent standards for a guy, but after KPOP, my standards have become very unrealistic xD I just want a guy who is decent looking, likes me for me, makes decent money, appreciates the fact that I will only get married if he is serious about me and will probably have to wait a long time for me to decide that he is the one for me, taller than me, and is close to his family~ ^^ (And he must have an ANGELIC voice like SHINee's Jonghyun...I think that's where my standards get unrealistic xD)

Since I am a Korean girl, I'll explain my side of the story. I graduated from SKY so for some reason I feel like I want to meet a man who graduated from SKY so that we have more things in common and we don't differ much. Expecting to meet someone who share common grounds with you isn't a bad thing right? I bet guys have certain ideal aspects they expect from a girl (big boobs, pretty hair, curvy, all looks, looks, looks) but I don't give cause they are "ideals." Anyone can have rights to dream about the perfect person they want to fall in love with.

I think this is pretty much an Asian thing of having an ideal guy with more functionally adept qualities which would always include knowing a foreign language, studying abroad, earning a high income, studying in a well-known university, etc. Its more of the culture of wanting the guy to still be the provider in the relationship. The thing is, these are just "ideal" types which do not necessarily mean that girls will always go for the person who has these qualities as sure enough, boys who have these are waaay too few.
@sborrink
@sborrink 10 жыл бұрын
For me, the ideal type is simple. Smart, nice, Christian, capable of protecting the people he cares about, and a non-smoker. If he's a hard worker, muscular, and Korean-BONUS! Why Korean? Because I find Korean guys really attractive. Now, for me personally, it is better if the guy starts out as a friend, because a guy who STARTS in the friend-zone can get OUT of the friend-zone. A guy who I SHUFFLE into the friend-zone, has no chance of getting out.

I think it's not just limited to dating cultures, but also to the society's overall culture and pressure! From what I can tell there isn't really an "ideal type" in Northern Europe. Everyone has their individual personal preferences. Although, I think good humor and fashion sense are the two things girls look most for here. Dating an asian guy is becoming wildly popular too.

Your comment about the tall guy/short guy thing totally reminded me of this huge story that circulated in China a few years ago when a girl participating in a TV dating show stated that she'd rather cry in the back of a BMW than laugh on the back of a bicycle. There was a huge backlash against the girl calling her a gold digger and such but a lot of people also said that she was just saying what the majority of people thought and did but just didn't state it so blatantly on national tv.

There is a popular "activity" in Korea now called "Fake Funerals" basically you pay money to go through the process of dieing. Write your wills, going into a coffin etc. Then after a few hours the people open the coffins to let them out. I guess its "rebirth"? Check it our on Vice Japan KZbin channel. they do an entire documentary on it. Hope this helps! P.S. South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Around 31 people per 100k? My boyfriend might be slightly chubby and maybe his not the most handsome of guys, but I don't care about that. He's the kind of guy that cares a lot and is really easy to talk with. While other guys think kpop is weird and gay, he actually watched a couple of mv with me and said that it was actually pretty good. And he's a real nerd too sometimes. He loves Glee and Dr. Who (as do I) and we always fangirl together. So, for me, as long as I like that person, education, money and such is just a plus but not really of importance.

I never had an ideal guy. One day my current boyfriend for 5 years found me but at the time he was a mess so it was like anxiety rapped around a really nice guy and we're still together so now I'm just really happy !! And the best part is I taught him computers and found him an ideal 70,000 a year job that isn't too stressful because i love him and his family doesn't live in poverty anymore because of it :D I also taught him to eat right and exercise since I'm a karate teacher. My standards, sadly are too much unrealistic since I begun my kpop fan/anime fan life. First, I want to emphasize that I'm a plain/ugly girl, with not many qualities (I'm not being emo, I'm telling the truth), and this is why this gets so unrealistic, because what I expect is basically a super duper hot guy to be extremely in love with me, I don't think I have many more standards. Well, you seem to somehow acknowledge, that you're influenced. How do you view guys overall? Do you have male friends? Can you talk with them about many things? If you have, then you can start from there. I mean, would you really be comfortable with a guy, who seems to think TOTALLY different, even to the extent, that you can't unterstand each other, like, never? Can you be open about your feelings with him? And is he comfortable with you? Maybe your view of love will become different with time and maybe some amazing (by that, I mean something like funny, self-confident, or just really nice and passionate about his hobbies) guy shows up, who's totally not meeting your expectations, but still makes your heart skip a beat :) and the same could happen to a guy meeting you. I saw a lot of couples, who were both not good-looking by the standards of society. But they were so in love with each other. They had respect, and trust for each other. And I mean, everybody has their own preferences, so why does it got to be that kind of beauty? So don't make yourself so down, maybe it needs time

For the first few years they only get a small allowance because they have to pay back their high loan to the companies. However JungKookie I don't care you are rich or poor because you are my ideal boyfriend! Ok that is a dream. Frankly I think girls can help contribute monetarily to the family as well.

Honestly (I was born in Trinidad and Tobago) but I'll answer for the United States since I've been here for 10 years (I'm 16 now). It's pretty simple personality comes first. Most girls would like the guy to be taller have a humorous side, pay majority/half of the bills (if they live together or get married), and have manners. It's ok though if you're not a really tall guy because, nobody wants to be put on a pedestal for being perfect. I like that most American guys are so straight-up honest as well while dating because, I feel like a lot of K-dramas (which I l love) depict guys as way too shy and can't speak up. Also there's a lot more open skin ship here like holding hands, tight hugs, kissing (like a real kiss LOL), cuddling, and even remaining some distance away from each other because, American couples don't like to get on each other's last nerves. Most guys don't care about the size of their girlfriend because, like I said personality comes first. Also you don't plan who you end up falling into a relationship with because, it could end up working with anyone.

I feel like some of the comments kind of miss a few things, but here's my take on it: I'm American. Now, your average American girl might really like a rich guy, a guy who's thin and works out a lot--nice abs, a decent trust fund, fast car, a good job, pretty smile, curly hair, dashing and daring, quick as a coursing river, etc etc. Some of these things are general--like I'm totally cool with the pretty smile and curly hair, but the quick as a coursing river is entirely optional. Communication and an openness and willingness to share with me his thoughts and ideas are far more important. I feel like those things are unspoken but wanted ideals in any mate, for any person. For specifics for me, I'm very into the arty types who love books and as much as people mock hipsters, I'm totally cool with guys that can their own strawberry preserves and use beard oil. I would say compatibility varies for a lot of people though, and in the long run and interest in each other and a willingness to work for that interest is the most important thing. But yeah, when people say "korean women want so much." I'd say that out of a survey if 40 women say they want a guy who works for Samsung, LG, or Kia--then that goes on the list, meanwhile the 1-5 women who would totally date a coffee shop owner don't really get mentioned because it wasn't a top 5 answer. Likewise, I assume women are answering the question based on an "ideal" fictional mate, which doesn't exist. Say you could "order up" the ideal spouse, what would s/he be? The reality for myself is that after being very close to someone, the ideal spouse is someone who enjoys my company and makes passing the time a pleasant thing. For others, they never really experienced a relationship like this and mostly just think of things that would make their personal lives better(money, status) rather than the intangible things that require a lot of fancy work to express. So "He makes lots of money" is a natural answer for someone who believes that will lead to happiness.

As a Chinese-American, I was told by my parents to look for someone with my ethnic background in addition to the laundry list of (superficial) success. I dated exactly one person my parents approved of and ended the second date early because he was SO. BORING. Someone with a list of physical requirements they're looking for in a partner isn't gonna be the type you want to be involved with anyway, because eventually they'll find something about you that isn't good enough. (Conversely, if you have ridiculous standards for a potential partner, you better live up to them yourself.) Then again... if two shallow, beautiful people want to be rich and dissatisfied together, who am I to judge?

He is also one of the funniest, sweetest, most considerate guys I've ever met. We laugh so much when we're together. He doesn't try to change me. He is pretty awesome. I know a ton of guys who are 6 foot and over. I just really like tall guys. But yo, I don't really care that much about all of that material business. I would like to marry someone who can have a decent and really intellectual conversation with me. I'm really sciencey and it seems like all of the guys I have been attracted to are intimidated by me because I'm smarter than them. I'm like, SUCKS FOR YOU GIVIN UP HOT MOMMA BECAUSE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU CAN'T BE BETTER THAN ME, LOL. It is really disheartening, though. When they say 'art' schools, they meant 'art' as in painting and sculpture. There are also other types of art-related school for acting and singing like performing art schools where lot of idols go to. Some of these schools are very easy to get in and as long as you work in your real life career, you freely get credits to graduate. On the other hand, there are some well known, traditional, famous acting schools like where some of well known actors like Han SeokKyu (from 'deep rooted tree'), Choi MinShik (from 'old boy') ect. went. There are very hard to get in, and only handful idols have been accepted. I think Suho from Exo is one of them.

those criterias are quite similar to an ideal man in HK, but more so because HK women are becoming more and more educated and holding higher and more well-paid positions in companies, so they also become more picky with men. They still want their boyfriends/husbands to be more successful and be able to take care of them, but that's hard if the woman is already making $20000HKD/month.

As a guy knowing how much emphasis society/media puts on outer appearance of women, these ideal men expectations are well-deserved--especially in Korea where image is almost everything. If men want their women to be everything they're pressured to be, then men should be held to a high standard, as well. One side can't blame the other (although I do believe it was men who started the whole thing).

If a girl is actually looking for someone like that, she is delusional. The majority of Korean men are shorter than 180cm, didn't go to SKY universities, don't make that much money, and have no experience living overseas. I hope people thumbs up or at least make this aware. You must ask WHY there are these kinds of standards (university, height, double eyelids, etc) in Korea. I'd say that Koreans in general have a culture of flexing and showing off more so than North America in general. In fact, I've had some real encounters of korean people who go OUT OF THEIR WAY ( you wouldn't believe) to show their friends or parents about how well their lives are. Because relationships is part of your identity, of course these impersonal standards will prevail. Basically, korean girls don't want tall guys for themselves as much as wanting to SHOW OFF to THEIR girlfriends that they have a tall boyfriend.

I never had anyone ask about the university because of such a matter, maybe the job might be more interesting in the end. And there are also girls who wait for their ideal type who just understands them, looks good and is a little taller. Maybe is a good kisser also and a little romantical ..... That might be the ideal type of many girls ;) I have a boyfriend and from his lookings he is not at all my ideal type xD (that would be GD haha) but it's so much more important to feel good around this person, to be able to talk about everything, laugh and cry and know each other.

But on the other hand, i think its maybe not only an issue in the korean culture but also there people all over the world which look first at the money you earn and which kind of social status you have. I live in Germany and i think its quite the same here. The're a lot of people who are superficial and to them its more important to have a super good-looking friend who has a lot of friends ( even if they are fake like for example "1000 friends in your buddylist on Facebook ) and is well acknowledged in society. by the way, i enjoy to watch your videos about the korean culture and also the kpop monday vids - its very interesting! keep it up ;) p.s. i'm sorry that my english isn't the best. i know that and i practice to become a better speaker/writer

well, to be honest, i dont care about which university he come from, cause im not going to date his university grades... :o and the height ~ i rather date a guy thats aroung 170 cm xD cause im 160 cm so i dont want anyone thats like 185, i mean, that would be very awkward! xD the money, i dont really care about that eitherway, i come from a kinda poor family (i mean not poor, but we dont have alot of money either, but we still live fine :D) so im raised with not to much money and with the thoughts that money isnt everything, as long as there is enough for food and house and other important stuff then its fine :D xD

Thank God I live in a country where you just love people for what they are not for what they have! The university one graduates from, the job one has, the car one drives, the amount of money one earns, etc. are all secondary priorities for us Portuguese women! There's no ideal prototype of a perfect man, we just love for the sake of love!
