In The Machinest he's not a drug addict, it's the characters' internal guilt. If you have watched the movie you would know...and some of these are NOT method actors, and some used props. Daniel Day Lewis is a very well known intense method actor, who would always go to extreme.

Chances are he probably needed work done anyway so started it and then filmed and finished the work after production, that is why it cost 5k to ruin them and 20k to fix them

2:30 Sadly your researches are mistaken, John Wayne was cancer free until 1979, 3 years after the Shootist was filmed. the Shootist was filmed in 1976, in Carson City’s historical residential district at 5,0000 feet above sea level. The duke campaigned for the role of J.B. but was turned down because he had a lung removed in 1963, and had issues shooting Rooster Cogburn at a high elevation. He was a tough SOB, he actually did all his own stunts for The Son’s Of Katy Elder while still recovering, and needed oxygen between takes. When all other big names like Clint Eastwood passed on the Shootist they contracted the Duke, and there was a nurse and oxygen on standby 24 hours a day Although they had to shut down for a week when he contracted the flu, he never had any other health issues. Just sayin'
