Oh my god I remember that one! I think it was presented similarly to the fake documentaries before they were made to be actively deceptive, too. Right? Are we thinking of the same special? The saddest thing is that they could have just said "here's a fictionalized drama, made by people who actually came from the Amish community," and it could have been super successful and respected as an "authentic voice" with almost no major changes. With the exception of Jeremiah (and likely because he was so much older than the others, I think like 30 in that first season) they'd all been pretty strictly Amish or Mennonite until just a couple of years before. Of course, they'd "cheated" in some ways, like many other Amish teens but to me, it didn't change much. I don't know, maybe it was because I wasn't gullible enough to believe they'd never used cell phones or cars or anything and for me, it was more about watching them try to mature outside of their community. It was weird because they were (and several still are) very emotionally immature, which is a side effect of growing up in a community that places so much importance on gender differences, very specific expectations and rules of interaction. Even though they'd all spent some time away and were all late teens/early 20s, it wasn't enough time away to gain that maturity and to know what to do with their emotions. It was like watching a bunch of middle schoolers. And while plenty of the drama was scripted, I'm not just talking about that, but their day to day interactions with each other, reactions to things that happened that most of us just blow off as normal occurrences, etc.

Fun thing about the coupon stuff: I used to work at a grocery store. Close to closing time we would have several men come to my register, the one all the way in the back with carts full of women's feminine products and diapers. Completely clearing the shelves and coming in with freshly clipped coupons right from the magazines in bulk. They managed to clear out some of the most important stock just to stock and resell it at their own stores, whilst buying it for cheap or completely free. It was legal and they were smart to know the limits of each coupon, but we would have to deal with customers at night who couldn't get diapers or panty liners cuz of these dudes.

It's just commercial pressure. The aim of a company is to make money, and the business care for 'real' documentaries is hard to justify. They are very expensive to produce - long production times, armies of experts, expensive interviews, on-location filming. All that expense for unimpressive viewing figures. The return on investment on reality TV crap is just far better: More views, cheap production by far. First rule of furry club? You don't talk about furry club. Second rule of furry club? You don't talk about furry club. Seriously though, virtually every single regular TV show dramatizes it and blows it out of proportion for drama because 90% of it is just the same cosplay stuff other nerds do, but with animals instead of comic book characters and that is just not exciting. My Strange Addiction did an episode on "living dolls" which did not do any favors for the lolita fashion community. The one girl was shown to wear her outfits constantly and couldn't get a job because of her refusal to wear "normal" clothes. They showed her trying to apply for jobs while in lolita. Like lolita can be a sort of lifestyle for some people (these dresses can be expensive af, I can understand wanting to get your moneys worth out of them) but it's like the furry episode, we don't constantly wear our dresses everyday and everywhere. Many I know only do so for special events and group meet-ups. The show also followed a guy who was obsessed with turning himself into a Ken doll and had gotten a shit ton of surgeries in order to do so. This was cuz the ep was about people addicted to being "living dolls." As if this guy and lolitas are comparable in the slightest. The worst part is that the girls, one girl at least, was told by the producers they were filming a documentary about the fashion subculture and weren't fully informed they were filming for My Strange Addiction. It could've been worse, like at least TLC didn't go the "p*do-enabler" angle with the community most people on the outside take due to the unfortunate name "lolita" (Japanese borrowed the name because it sounded like an old fashioned young girl). But the whole thing reeked of trying to make the community look like a bunch of freaks.
@offbranddorito9668 Жыл бұрын
It pisses me off when people try the "p*dophile-enabler" angle. Is it an adult wearing cutesy clothing? Yes? Then it's not p*dophilia. Is it a child wearing cutesy clothing? Yes? Then being attracted to them is a crime and the child is not at fault. An adult can wear whatever they want and do whatever they want with other adults. It's never p*dophilia unless an actual child is involved. It reminds me of when I saw a tiktok of an autistic person making a sex joke. And all the comments were "she shouldn't have sex, she's basically a child! Whoever has sex with her should go to jail for being a predator". It was the most violent ableist rhetoric I'd ever seen.

I think TLC really harms niche communities that are seen as "deviant". They aired some episodes on furries. And I'm not gonna say that furries are "oppressed" because oppression minorities face is much different, but they're definitely harassed. There have been many instances of furries, even kids, getting harassed to the point where they commit suicide. And, disgustingly, that's probably what TLC wants. On the Breaking Amish thing, the Amish have a thing called Rumspringa where they’re allowed to go out and experience the modern world, less than 15% stay in the modern world, 85-90% return to their amish ways. Which to be fair, if you’ve seen the modern world, I don’t blame them.

If I remember correctly they can use modern tools if there helping someone who owns them

Well, that and the intentionally induced culture shock many of them encounter.

That's really not what Rumspringa is, try looking up what Torah Botrager says about it.

When I was a teen (late 90s) and early 20s, they stilled air documentary/informative shows. They had a show called Trauma: life in the ER which was amazing and intense. I learned what the aging disease is, primordial dwarfism, and other rare genetic disorders. But then Discovery bought them and turned them into reality trash.

6:12 “Abe is just a guy with a trampoline” Idk why but that and the accompanying footage of him just casually jumping on the trampoline with a cowboy hat on made me laugh. I’d say my humor is broken but it’s always been like this

Extreme Couponing is the only one l've watched, and even without learning it was fake, l was still baffled by it. In my country, coupons specifically say things like "50 % off, only 1 coupon per purchase" or "Only 6 items per customer". You'd never be able to cheat like they do on the show. (I also thought the people should be re-selling things to their neighbours to get something good out of these silly purchases. Because you don't need 600 maxipads for $30 when you're born a man.)
@mahumia Жыл бұрын
Yeah same here. You would need to be extremely lucky to get more than 50% off your purchase at a grocery store. I just imagined myself getting a 95% discount and dropping it all off at a local food bank or other charity who could really use the items, instead of building a useless stockpile... The few times where the show actually cooperated with charities (or at least pretended to) were my favorites.

I remember watching the episode with the furry gal when it aired with my mom... I was praying they wouldnt bring up furry porn and whatnot but they did >___> Anyway Lauren/Kiira was accused of tracing the picture she was shown drawing of her fursona. I dont know if it was proven or not. But a whole thing ensued about it

I remember just putting an episode of Extreme Couponing on once and it made me so angry. The person on the episode asked her church to pray for her to receive coupons for that episode. Her prayers were answered and all that stuff she bought went in her basement. Like it couldn't go somewhere else, like a food bank, homeless shelters, veterinary clinic, etc. Definitely tells you the audience they're targeting.

I’m 40 and I actually remember when TLC was actually the Learning channel. I didn’t have it at home, but I had a teacher that would record some of the programs and play them in class. Those were the good ol days

I remember watching extreme couponing as a kid. I was really shocked when I learned it was fake a couple of years later and felt super betrayed. …I was a weird kid.

I had to spend a couple nights awake overnight in the hospital two years ago and TLC played Extreme Couponing in the early hours of the morning and I got to watch the episode with the 15 year old bossing his family around. I remember the good old days when it played during times when normal people would be awake and able to watch the show. FYI, TV options aren't so great in the hospital, especially late night/early morning.

I clean my local library and one day the vacuum there was taken out with a sign on it that said something along the lines of "DO NOT Use! Someone was in the men's room trying to... entertain themselves with the vacuum." Needless to say, we used a different vacuum after that.

Hey! Couponer here! I started extreme couponing in 2019 after having seen the tlc show. I was not surprised when I found out the way they show couponing on the show isn’t exactly real life. However, you CAN 100% walk into a store with coupons and walk out with free merchandise. It’s easier to do at cvs and Walgreens. Grocery stores like kroger actually changed their couponing policies after this show brought awareness of them to more people. Couponing has been getting harder and harder since this show began but it is still possible. I couponed and made videos for a year straight and I built up a stockpile closet full of personal care items that I got for free or was paid to take out of the store.
