I believe it is much worse than just not being taken seriously. She must have a lot of physical limitations as well with thin and fragile bones, lack of strength to do any even somewhat hard work and so on. She will probably not be able to ever get pregnant and have kids as well. The situation is although not a complete tragedy but still no fun at all.

Idk the way her older sister spoke about shauna rubbed me the wrong way. And also the way the parents explained why they think she is jealous of Tara. Why can’t someone who is disabled lead a fulfilling life that might look different than their expectation? Even though she struggles, that does not mean that she is ashamed or jealous. I know that probably wasn’t what they meant, but it still made me hurt for Shauna.

I actually met someone with this condition many years ago when I volunteered at a school for special needs children. He was 25 years old but looked like he was 9 or 10; he didn't attend the school for academic purposes as he had long since graduated from college, but it was a convenient place for him to meet his physical therapist who also worked at the school. He enjoyed playing with the children as well, so there was an additional benefit. I couldn't tell you the reason for his condition, but he had a very positive attitude about everything. He knew that he needed to find a job where his diminutive stature would not be an impediment and so he learned how to be a computer programmer. Since I was in IT we actually had quite a bit to talk about. He was living a low-key life on his own, and that seemed to suit him just fine outwardly; but he mentioned how jealous he was of my relationship with my wife after he met her one time so I knew that he was actually quite lonely. I lost touch with him after I stopped volunteering at the school, but I hope that he managed to find someone who can love and accept him.

I was thinking the same. It's one thing to be stuck that way physically, but to be stuck like that in any other way is the responsibility of the family. I know it's a complex situation, and easy to say as an outsider, but if someone came up to me as her mom to berate me about how she looked, I'd go full mama bear. I'd call out how rude it was and explain to them her age and then refuse to answer for her. Make them talk to her. If it happened often enough, I'd just start carrying around business cards with the information and a request to stop being judgemental to strangers. Maybe I'd think about the comments lying awake at night, but I'd be damned if I let her know that. I'd still encourage her to dress and act her age. You need to teach a thick skin in a situation like that because that's what will help her most.

That’s really heartbreaking that it’s so hard to go out with her family (or anyone), that people probably think she’s an 8 year-old dressed up in heels/makeup/mini-skirts. I mean they have probably had the cops called on them due to people thinking she was being trafficked. I feel awful they have to deal with that.

She's taking it better than her parents for sure, which is amazing. Still, I can't imagine being stuck with those kinds of limitations, and your own parents perceiving you as a child. In a way, I get it. Psychologically, her appearance causes major cognitive dissonance. I do hope she's able to attain her independence though. But I'd be worried about what happens as she ages. Will her internal organs eventually grow and get too big for her body, or are there other concerns?

Decent idea, wouldn't work in practice for two reasons. One being people just forget most of everything they learn in school if it's not needed in their daily life. I for one can't remember most of the algebra stuff I learned because I've never needed it and likely never will. Second is that people just don't care.

I genuinely feel bad for that woman and her family because it's neither their fault. She was born with it that she has no control over. I am her age with a learning disability let alone on the autism spectrum and my twin brother and I had some challenges growing up. Which by the way one time when we were like 16 years old, we were mistaken for looking like we're 22 or 23 years old because we were over 6 feet tall. So yeah we were mistaken as adults before but now since my twin brother and I are 22 about to be 23 in June, now we look like we're in college which by the way my twin brother is in college and I chose not to go to College. One more thing I'm 6'5 and my twin brother is 6'6 so sometimes people ask us if we play basketball. That gets old very quick.
