Honestly I think it's like when we see a car accident & want to make sure everyone is ok and that we don't know anyone there. That's called rubbernecking on the east coast. Such an odd word lol. We all have a bit of a desire to watch a good "trainwreck" as they say. Maybe on a certain level we want subconsciously compare ourselves to the people on TV & we think "well at least I'm not doing that" It doesn't even have to happen knowingly. We want to see an end to the story we are shown, and who is going to "win" these crazy pageants. The phrase "I just can't look away" comes to mind. We are curious by nature & when you get even subconsciously involved in a reality show or book, we still want to finish it to see how it ends. Most people would turn the channel if they had never seen it before because they don't know anything about it. Some people get so repulsed that they turn the channel and then avoid it all together. But MOST people, not all, watch a little bit and then want to see who wins or how it ends. By watching till the end, they get sucked into the drama without even realizing it. I'm not a psychologist either, but I did go over these types of subjects in college classes for tv/film, as well as in multiple psychology classes. It's a bit of a similarity to addiction, but we don't have a dependence, and most people aren't watching it because they just adore kids crying & adults fighting. lol They watch to see the winner. They draw in viewers by only airing half of the story in 1 episode and put the rest in another. Then the person wants to watch the next one to see what happens. It's a repeating cycle. It's a way to let our brains not think about our own issues or problems. We shutdown our thoughts by engaging in a tv show or movie for a bit. Hope that helped a little. I'm not any type of expert, I just know the tactics used on television to bring viewers & a bit about how our brains turn to the lower level of tv, which is considered reality shows.

Back when these shows started, they would yell for the pixie sticks and soda STAT! If a kid was tired, the parents loaded them up with sugar and liquid sugar drinks. Poor Honey Boo Boo is huge and they’re now trying to get her sister Pumpkins daughter in pageants 🤦♀️🤦🏾 Her mom, Momma June is off on a crack bender all the time and she just leaves her kids. The somewhat crazy lady who married sugar bear, Honey Boo Boo’s dad, had a daughter and she’s pushing for her baby to do pageants as well! My gosh people! Let the kids run and around and play. Did anyone else feel like her name, Aniston, is somehow a nod to Jennifer Aniston? I’ve never heard that name as a first name. The only reason I was thinking that is because when they said the dads name Brad, he kinda laughed like “yup that’s my daughter Aniston” It doesn’t sound awful, it’s just unique. These pageants break my heart. They should be done differently if at all. I saw some natural pageants and they were at least about all natural beauty, not makeup & hair. I guess we’ll have to quit giving it attention for it to go away.
@lh56554 жыл бұрын

Eric T. Cartman Actually, in natural youth pageants, you’re not allowed to enter until you’re 4. They’re judged mainly in interview, how they carry themselves on stage, and their personality. These kids are ultimately being judged on their parents choices, not theirs. They are too young to decide if they want to put on a sailor costume and parade around in front of an audience. If you ask a child to do something with excitement in your voice and the look on your face reflects dissatisfaction if they say no, then chances are, if that child remotely looks up to you, they will end up saying yes just to please. It's a really messed up cycle that once started is very difficult to break. I know because I was in pageants from 2-6 years old. The only reason they stopped was because my mom got married and her husband had to go overseas, so we moved out of country. I honestly believe if we would have stayed, they would have kept me in them for as long as possible 🤑🙄😕

Pageants are a part of American culture. Many of these girls when grown up say the same things that you say you benefited from. I think it’s still wrong, but many of them gain lots of confidence from it from an early age. Maybe too much confidence.

Sam Es not my American culture.. I don’t know a single person that’s ever done a pageant. I think it’s probably hit or miss. If you’re “pretty” and do well sure it will build your confidence(hopefully). I think most of the time it’s based on looks vs. a kid’s smarts or talents and it’s disgusting.

There's actually been studies that have gone into place involving these pageants, they hit quite a few of the criteria that are actually considered exploitation and child abuse. There was a movement in France to ban them for anyone under the age of 16 for these reasons (I don't know if the motion ever passed). Even if the child is having fun, it can have terrible effects on their mental and social development. The information is there, the research and the direct comparisons, they technically fall under abuse. The biggest reason nothing has been done though, is due to the guidelines that are supposed to be followed, yet not always followed by the parents due to the competitive nature. So it reaches a point of, is it the pageants, or just those parents that are causing the issue.
