_1080 P is still the industry standard, most of my video playbacks are either on the phone or tablet; I don’t make industry-standard movies so I’m pretty good with 1080 P And nearly 80% of people never really playback their videos above 1080 P on KZbin. You can’t really tell the difference when it comes to image quality with resolution except for on standard TV monitors. The bigger the screen, the more resolution you’re going to need_ _1080 P allows me to have a lot more recording time as I record with 422HQ for the highest image quality of details especially when I want to record above 30fps at night_

Yes. On my 15 pro max when I film 16:9 in the portrait orientation I am seeing the sides cut off compared to when I have it in the horizontal orientation.

I purchased the True LIfe LUT and found two cube files in the download. I'm sure I missed something but why two files? Which do I use in BM Camera app? Which do I use in Resolve? Great tutorial! One of the clearest and Most complete BMC tutorials out there.

Glad you liked the video! For the LUT you will want to use "65" for the BM Camera App and Resolve. The 33 is there because some programs like LumaFusion can't use a 65.

I have not signed up for the cloud service that this app can do so I'm not sure how that works. My guess is if you go into your Media and poke around the menu options there may be something there to let you send it to your cloud account. Also check your Settings menu for additional Cloud options on how you want the phone to interact with it when you do record videos on the app.

Yes you're right, It has all the codecs, but unfortunately it will not allow you to shoot in Apple Log. I wonder if there is a way for Blackmagic to ennable this feature with a future update for regualr iPhones?

So glad you found this video and that it was helpful! Resolve is definitely a different beast compared to something like Final Cut X. I have since switched to Davinci and do love all the things it can do. I will be compiling a tutorial in the future, it may take a bit, but I will try to explain it as clear as possible!

My DVR color management setting is simply Color Science: Davinci YRGB Timeline: Rec 709 (Scene) Output: Same as timeline. I recently shot a short film while on the latest BMCapp version and it did not need to be color transformed from rec2020-rec709 before applying the LUT. Hope this helps!

You're most welcome! Yes, you will need a USB-C to HDMI cable (Or DVI if your monitor uses that standard) and it'll project what you see onto the monitor. In the settings you'll have different options to have a clean HDMI feed with no camera settings information. Or you can have it where it displays camera settings like ISO, SS etc.

You're most welcome! Yes you can edit the video clips with smartphone apps like iMovie or LumaFusion. Though with iMovie you'll want to make sure you send whatever video clips you want to use from the "Files" app over to your photo album App as iMovie (currently) does not give itself access to the Files app.

When recording to In App & Photo Library is it recording the clip twice, increasing disk use? Perhaps they'll allow Photo Library only in a future update if that's the case as many of us use Apple Photo to organize our iPhone clips.

Yes, it does record it twice. It's kind of weird how Apple Files and Photos do not talk to each other or share a folder together. One of those weird things Apple does for not real logical reason, but we deal with it. But I agree, hopefully in a future update we have the option to just choose Photo Album only.

fantastic app...I want to use it with my 15 pro max while recording Pro Res LT to an external samsung SSD...but I want to use either a DJI Osmo mobile 6 or an Insta 360 Flow gimbal...these gimbals have their own apps...can I still use the BlackMagic app? I guess so...I will just lose the functions of the native apps...otherwise BM is great. I will use my 15pro max for vertical videos for social content (tired of cropping my 4k footage from the Sony FX30) and it will be faster and almost as good for social platforms. Thanks

So glad you like the format of the channel and subbing! Long story short, The Apple log to Rec 709 LUT is used so that your LOG footage (greyish and not bright) will look like a normal video. People film in LOG because of its editing benefits after the fact. You get more control of contrast and colors. LUTs are used as a way to quickly get an idea of what your footage could look like. You can also use the LUT as a starting point and color grade from there. Thats the short version of it. It's a great tool for people that want to get a more unique image than the baked in look of regular video.

It depends on which phone you are using. iphone 15 pro/max can do 4k60p at prores. Older phones can do 4k60p using the HEVC Codec option. Even older iphones will need to drop down to 1080 or 720p to get higher frame rates. So it just depends on what phone you are using at the end of the day.

Prores is a high quality uncompressed format. If you are just learning, you do not need to worry about using this format until you are working with multiple teams in production. Slow motion is not achieve in the recording. You will record in 60 frames a second and slow it down later in editing. All of these settings are in the camera/recording tab of the app. Go ahead and experiment with different settings. I will have a beginners course available soon that helps people who want to learn about video and explain all the basics. From there it won't matter what camera you use, as long as you know the basics you can make the camera do what you need :)

Unfortunately I have a feeling that Apple will never release Apple LOG into the iphone 13's because its more based off of the 15 pro camera sensors. It would be interesting to see if Blackmagic ever develops their own iPhone LOG that is a true LOG. I always felt like the Filmic Pro LOGs didn't behave true. We shall see what happens.

Sean is correct. Phone cameras traditionally all have one F-Stop. Theres not enough space for an adjustable F-stop at this time.

The x2 is just a sensor crop of the main camera sensor. It won't show up as a lens selection in the blackmagic app. you'd have to go the Magnify Icon and go to 2x. Make sure you have your main 24mm lens selected. I'm not sure if this does the same type of digital crop that Apple's on app uses, so sharpness and detail may not be the same. Hopefully Blackmagic will add the Sensor Crops in the lens selections in their next update.

I unfortunately do not have a 13 pro so I'm not sure. If you're looking for "cleanest" then you'll want to go with a compressed codec like h.264 or h.265 as Prores will let you see all the "grain" structure in certain shots while the compressed codec compresses the grain away. At the end of the day to get the cleanest shots. Make sure you are exposed properly and have enough lighting in your shots.

At this moment in time on the latest version, it does not seem the "Audio output" setting can be used to override the USB Microphone protocol. Hopefully they are working on this feature as it should be an easy setting for them to implement. Be sure to write them and give them feedback so that they have reference of how many people what this feature added.

Any video file no matter where it comes from can be color graded. If you're talking about the Apple LOG from iPhone 15 pros and max. I'm not sure how CapCut handles its color grading structure. You may be able to load a LUT to process the LOG, but LOG only really shines if you're able to apply corrections BEFORE and AFTER the LUT in the color grading order of operations tree (layers)

Thats a good question. Unfortunately I have no idea why it would read as a different file size. Could be a programing thing. As far as I can tell the video quality doesn't diminish when transferring over to the photo gallery so I wouldn't worry about the file sizes not matching too much.

Blackmagic drew out your phones locked away abilities. The unfortunately part is the first iphones that have pro-res still have the slow USB2.0 speed lightning ports, making it a pain to offload.

It is only available on iPhone 15 pro and pro max at this time. It is not a blackmagic feature rather it is a feature tied to the iphone itself. Not sure if Apple will eventually add LOG down to the iPhone 13 pros in a future firmware (Because of Prores). But for sure it will continue to be in their future phones.

In your video editing software you're going to have to make a cut at the point where you switch cameras and then flip that part of the cut to the correct orientation.

How do I save these videos to my computer? I click save to photos then connect my phone to Windows, but then the video file names are completely changed and they are not in the order that I want them in (I prefer the file names that Blackmagic uses, when I save to photos, the iPhone renames them something with random characters and they are not in order) Is there any other way of doing this?

For me I currently attach an editing external SSD or USB stick to the phone to transfer my files off the phone to the computer. I agree that its not the most ideal and this is one of those weird Apple Quirks where Apple Files won't be seen like an external hard drive when attached to the computer. Its a unnecessary step, but works.

I will not use for editing directly but to record video might be ok....which one do you for sure recommend that you have tried?

It does not take photos, at least not yet. Not sure if Blackmagic will roll out that feature in the future. Part of me doubts it as they are primarily video focused. But another part of me thinks its probably not to hard to implement into their software.

An excellent introduction to this app for newcomers. I would howver take issue with your mistake of calling the 2 x lens as 2 "ecks" and not 2 times. This is the correct use of the x symbol. It's the multiplication factor and not just a name of the lens. Too many peoiple might just hear this and go away and continue using it...

Correct, all the lenses are at a fixed F-stop.

This application does not shoot with constant FPS, why? The application only shoots with variable FPS.

I have seen people report that their inspector shows it as VFR. When looking back at all my footage I can't say I notice any stutter. Not entirely sure how else to confirm if its truly a VFR footage.

There is a "+/-" icon that sets your exposure compensation. Go into that and press AUTO. It's not my favorite implementation at the moment. I have asked them to let us lock shutter speed and give us AUTO ISO.

Thanks for your review. Auto white balance is NEVER a good option. To recommend it is not good advice. It will add a bluish or orangish tint to the image. This is a physical fact. Things are very easy now but when I started working with big ENG cameras seeing the. world through black and white viewfinders it was a more or less common occurrence to see cameramen coming back to the. TV with orange or blue images. I had read the physics of white balance and thanks to that never shot tinted images. . I used to say at the time that a good white balance is half the camerawork. It was. It doesn't matter if you are shooting with an iPhone or a £20,000 camera. Auto white balance is for amateurs only. If you are doing paid work then go manual. Sometimes the preset can be a good option but never the automatic. Auto white balance will also do a really bad average reading if the temperatures are mixed. The main problem is the bluish tint you will get when shooting outdoors with auto white balance. So, to anyone out there who is in doubt:. Do your own test. White balance, shoot. Then leave the white balance on auto and shoot. It will be bluish. There is no cheating the physics of light. I have tests proving that in a review. P.S. It seems that the app doesn't have manual white balance! It puzzles me that so many people are praising this app so much seeing there are so many important features missing. I guess the app will get better along the time. I did a test comparing the Blackmagic with cinema P3. Just the image quality.

I definitely agree with you about never using Auto White Balance. In the video I said that the presets for the WB does not seem to be correct in that it had some weird tint and that I got closer colors when using AWB. So for the time being, AWB would fair a little better. I also suggested to turn on the "lock AWB" so that it does not shift through-out your shot. Yes you can manually dial in your WB. Unlock the WB and freely scroll through the Kelvin range. No custom WB function yet, I feel that should be coming in their next update or soon.

Thanks for clearing that. The preset is a good option. I just shot a test for a review where I compared Blackmagic with P3. I use the preset and the auto on Blackmagic and the preset was clearly better as expected. It's just obvious. I looked at the colours in front of me and dialed the preset until I found a match. Then I clicked on auto and the image went bluish.

Could a gray card be used with the AWB and locking the WB be helpful?

I almost always white balance with grey card and then lock it. sometimes I might white balance on a white card if I am not happy with the grey card. And sometimes, if I don't have time to use a card then I white balance on a white car or the sky if the sky is. not blue, for example I am from the time of Betacam tape based cameras and used to say that white balance is half the camerawork. Whatever you do: Never ever use automatic white balance with an IPhone. The best cam app for a good white balance is Cinema P3 @@GCheung55
