To be fair, Republicans, especially in the Rust Belt, have never cared for free trade either, like reagan's tariffs on japanese motorcycles for example, or every Midwest politician ever's support for corn subsidies. Trump is ultimately the culmination of the Republican's base becoming more protectionist as their electoral strategy shifts towards the former Blue Wall. It's unfortunately the political winning move now, as Biden has shown by one-upping Trump's protectionism and being rewarded for it in swing states in 2020, which prompted Trump to become even more ridiculous long before Biden dropped out. It is really sad to see every free trade deal fall apart while we can only count on China shooting itself in the foot with making trade deals while we wait for our politicians to grow a spine.

The key is to tariff things both side mutual can tolerate, otherwise if Indonesia cares about its Tuna Industry more than it cares to pay American tariffs more for Alaskan Caho or Cod then they are just gonna respond in kind. That is not really efficient. Since not only are we losing job options and then forcing everyone to an already shrinking service industry, regulations become less efficient due to none of them mattering to foreign industry (why china isn't going start aiming for climate goals until 2060 or something), prices go up anyway due to logistical demand, prices go up some more anyway due to no competition at home creating foreign monopolies of trade, and more autonomy is lost as more crucial economic components are controlled by outside forces leading to less political power to those within country.

I work as an industrial engineer. These tariffs would be a disaster. We can manufacture things but alot of manufactured goods are simply processing lower quality manufacturing goods. These lower quality goods often are things like steel, gears, parts plastics. Often these need to be close to raw resources. Which we don’t have supply chains and resources for. Countries like China do have these but lack reliable quality control and education and expertise to make the highest quality goods. It would take 20-30 years just to get close to what others can do right now which would basically mean 20-30 years of limited GDP growth. This assumes that we can even export any of these goods but in reality everyone will tariff us back. So even if we do this all this manufacturing would be supplying goods that we could even sell to anyone outside America. These tariffs would basically be the be of global trade for the US. We’d be poor. Much more poor.

Why is gdp so important? Last time I checked the go to metric is gdp per capita. If you argue by gdp, then gdp per capita will improve by deporting immigrants which mostly gave a smaller contribution to gdp than others. Conversely, importing immigrants actively lowers your gdp per capita for the same reason. Gdp by itself adds no information. I can tell you there is a country A that has 3.385 trillion gdp and country B that has 3.071 gdp, and without any other information you would think country B is doing worse. Country A is India with 1.4 billion population, and country B is the UK with 70 million population. One has 2000 gdp per capita and the other has 45000. Every time you are provided statistics without context, you are being played by.

tax cuts for corporations for the reason of allowing more free and clear money for the company thus lowering prices and increasing wages literally relies solely on the corporation NOT being corrupt with greed to it's core but instead actually giving a fuck about their employees and being competitive in the market. why should they pay their employees more and lower prices when people have been buying their products at those prices and people have been working for them at that wage.... the company is comfortable where they're at and instead their CEOs will simply pocket the extra money... however I do like if we could just finally do away with the taxation of income... the things I could do with an extra 1500 bucks in my pocket would be great, I could invest it. buy something nice for friends or family during the holidays, fix something on my car. etc.
@WardeinIllinois2 сағат бұрын
Well let's say company A refuses to lower prices and increase wages. The workers pay sucks and the average consumer has to pay a lot for something of not that worth. Seeing this Company B gets the idea to actually lower their prices and increase the workers wages. Because of this workers would begin moving to the rival company and customers will begin buying their brand of products instead, forcing Company A to adapt or go bankrupt. The free market doesn't require that every company lower the price of something or increase the wage of the worker. It only requires that one company do so to force every other into submitting.

The US imported almost $200 billion worth of agriculture products in 2022. Furthermore, while the US is a net exporter of energy it still imports crude oil and petroleum products in order to meet some domestic demand. Lasly, when the price of most products in a country goes up and the cost of living increases then landlords might feel the need to increase rent in order to afford the same things that they previously could. Tariffs would/could absolutely increase the price of energy, food and rent.

@@Tokyo393-yv6ql That 15% shouldn’t be described as “only”. Much of it is basic agricultural goods, which after being imported are used in the production of an even larger percentage of American food. Furthermore, food costs have increased because of the inflation caused by global shortages which in turn were caused by a global pandemic. Trumps plan to put tariffs on all imports will lead to further price increases on virtually every single product. @Oogieboo1833Күн бұрын
@@eclipticpeak8452 Exporters are hurt by tariffs because other countries normally respond to increased tariffs by putting tariffs of their own, which reduces demand for our exports. This is very common throughout the world. Items couldn't just be tariff exempt. In order to maintain the current government personal income tax that we have now, our entire import sector would have to be tariffed 62% (3.5T in imports * .62 = 2.18T in personal income tax). To exempt anything would only increase that number. It would be unfeasible without significant repercussions. I encourage you to look at how Trump's tariffs in 2019 affected the average American's income.
@eclipticpeak8452Күн бұрын
@Oogieboo1833 to completely do away with federal income tax? Luckily trump isn't doing that so we don't need to tariff THAT aggressively. Also we don't have many exports to begin with. Most of the ones we do have are to Mexico and Canada and is mostly Oil. If we bring production back into America, it would help our exports by giving us more good TO export and allow our money to stay in our economy as opposed to going to other countries.
@eclipticpeak8452Күн бұрын
@Oogieboo1833 also any amount of sales reduced by retaliatory tariffs would be supplemented by an increased demand for American products in the states as well as using the materials for production as petroleum is used in most all production in the US.
@Oogieboo1833Күн бұрын
@@eclipticpeak8452 He attempted tariff increases during his presidency, ones far less than what he has proposed for his next presidency, many in 2019. The average American saw their adjusted spendable income decrease despite having to pay less of it into taxes, because prices for imported goods increased... All tariffs are just offloaded onto the consumer, so him suggesting setting high tariffs should be a warning to any American that prices for good will go up. Bringing production back to the USA would decrease the income received by the government through those tariffs, so the idea isn't sustainable long term regardless. Eventually, a sustainable income tax would need to be implemented again to make up for the lost tariff income.

Tariffs make the world poorer. Tesla is severely outcompeted by Chinese EVs and Elon lobbying to put tariffs on EVs is no different to everyday corruption.

Didn't Biden put more tariff on Chinese EV? Like 100% Tariff?
@jonathan2847Күн бұрын
@@TheebX92 Yes, both are wrong. But it looks like Trump is going to be more protectionist and thus worse here.

The real problem is that the American government is just too big. Historically US did not have an income tax and instead the government ran on tariffs (they even built roads, financed public schools etc on this money) but the government of today is far too massive for that to work. Its kinda hopless as well seeing how the national debt added every presidential term seems to be a geometric function.

Those tariffs would turn America into Argentina 2.0 or Brazil 2.0... we'll have milliins of Americans driving to Mexico or Canada to buy small electronics such as Playstations oe phones.
