I’m patriotic but I would never serve the armed forces just to line the pockets of defence companies and fight a pointless war in the Middle East then return home traumatised (or worse in a coffin) and ending up poor and homeless. I’d only join if there was a truly existential threat to this nation or if the British Isles were invaded (and that would never happen because of mutually assured destruction from our nuclear deterrent and neither Russia or China have the capability to even do so in the first place) It’s unsurprising that there is a shortage of people enlisting considering we are in an age where social media allows anyone to be well informed and public trust in the government is at an all time low.

Going by the current numbers, if the Tories do the best they're expected to do and Labour do the worst, Labour will still have 140 seats more, which means the King will have no real option other than to invite Starmer (or whoever becomes leader if he loses his seat) to form a government.

Volunteering is very good for people and young people make great volunteers. It can open up new interests, build confidence and help develop skills. Sometimes it can lead to jobs even. Plus, everyone should have to give back to the community or help those less fortunate. However, they're selling it like it is community service for prisoners. Wrap it up differently. Young people are interested in the environment so get them doing revegetation work or if they're interested in rights for people with disabilities then they can be voluntary support workers. Get them to list their preferences and, pending screening (ie someone with a criminal record can't be with people with disabilities) assign them to an appropriate agency.

Of all the countries in the world, the UK is among the least culturally willing to institute conscription. As an island nation there are only 2 reasons for a large army - invading somewhere else (not popular) and turning it on the population. I want you guys to understand something. The people that are going to vote conservative on July 4th are going to be elderly in majority. That's all they've got left. That's why Sunak's two plans are:- • Make 18yos do national service - the kids today who will be 18 at the time this goes live can't vote against it. They get no say of their own. Furthermore, national service stopped over _sixty years ago._ WW2 ended nearly _eighty years ago._ The people he's targeting never went to war, nor did national service. Remember that, because... • The second big policy is the "triple lock pension". Yes, after starving the elderly, cutting off their heating by not capping bills, and not keeping the NHS in check, he's offering them, _specifically,_ a bone (with no meat on it...) to win them back around and vote against the youth. Both of these go hand in hand. He's playing ages against each other. But please, if you're at the age where looking at these policies and think they're good, trust me, you're ruining what little future you have left. He couldn't get any policy off the ground any easier than he could the planes to Rwanda, but this is the sort of _appealing bluster_ he's known for. You wouldn’t need volunteering service for the police, fire, NHS and social care if these services were not given continuous real term cuts to budget since austerity. You wouldn’t need to force 18 year olds to help look after disabled or elderly people if social care was fully funded and if migration allowed more care workers into the U.K.

For people who support conscription: if you think it is beneficial, why don't you volunteer to do any of those services? Why do you need to be told to?

because the people that support it only support it because they're safe in the knowledge it's something they'll never have to do themselves, basically the only people this policy appeals to are boomers who are LARPing as their parents generation (pretending they did it when the vast majority didn't become adults until the 1970s) who have the Rose-tinted pseudo-nationalist nostalgia for a Britain that never existed outside of chocolate boxes and shows like Heartbeat, basically it's angry elderly racists who just want to punch down.

Why is no one promising to solve the housing crisis? It will close all the gaps in voters. Has anyone even considered decreasing annual rates on a mortgage to the 2010s period? How on Earth is it less important than national service? Why are they acting as if we don't have other problems?

Have they forgotten 18 yr olds are adults, how could they legally charge their parents for it? This is not the time to be doing this, the young people right now have been through enough changes in recent years and it's not getting any easier for kids, well they probably won't be getting in anyway

My late father benefitted greatly from his National Service. It showed him life outside his abusive family. However, even he believed that the system was a waste of time for the majority. When my father did National Service, the world was a different place. Life after the SWW was hard for many, but in many respects, it's more difficult for the young today. Jobs are harder to get. Many attend university and, because of a lack of support by government who ought to place greater emphasis on education, many of those students have to work at weekends in order to keep their heads above water. What support will they receive? None! Sunak is, as usual, divorced from the reality of life. 18 year olds having to work at weekends? Gosh! Really? Compulsory voluntary work is not voluntary work. It is forced labour! Has Sunak actually asked people if they want these "volunteers" at their organisations? As someone who has worked with volunteers, I can say that it's not easy. You either have to give them mundane tasks that are a waste of their time, or you have to stop your own work to supervise their's. There are also restrictions on what they can do, especially in the NHS and the emergency services. I'm not certain that the army would be too happy with dealing with 30,000 raw squaddies who will require a lot of training. Will this be where much of the funding goes? Just because other countries do something does not make it suitable for all countries. There may be advantages, but Sunak's rather restricted view cannot see them. A missed opportunity that I can see is that university students could have days built into the schedule to enable them to go into schools. As classroom assistants and mentors, they would benefit the next generations. Having worked with students in this way, I know that they usually enjoy their time, and pupils benefit greatly.

my experience mentoring young people of that age is that they are using their spare time to get a job and earn money for themselves or their families. Forcibly taking that time away will wreak havoc. I completely agree that university courses need to be brought back down to earth with experience days of the sort. It could help students become progressively more integrated into the career of their choice which is something you get from apprenticeships but with the added HE knowledge needed for certain roles

Please keep in mind that National Service finished in the UK in late 1960 when the last National Servicemen (and they were all men) joined. You were taken on at the age of 18 unless your entry was deferred for some reason. Going to University was one. Near the end the date for recruitment was moved back to those born before 1 October 1939 So, the youngest of them still living would have been 20 years of age in 1960. They will now be celebrating their 84th birthday this year, if they are still with us of course. This is why, when I hear anyone under the age of 84 banging on about how great the reintroduction of National Service would be, my reaction is "How the hell would you know? You didn't go through it!". Rant over!!!

I'm a British citizen, but I was born in Turkey, where I did 15 months of national service in the army so, I'm discussing this subject with reasonable experience. National service is compulsory and was an absolute waste of time; I still feel that those 15 months were stolen from my life. Some people love it, especially nationalists, which I don't have any problem with; if they like it, they can do it. Anyway, the Tories are coming up with more nonsense. I think they are testing the limit of how much more people could hate them.

The whole thing is not even half cooked: - What happens if someone rejects to do any of those? - Who is going to be punished? The 18 year old or the parents? - How much are they're going to get paid? What kind of training are they going to receive? And on and on and on. This is just something to try not to lose so many votes and do damage control on this election. And I feel like more non sense like these is coming. Just headlines to keep hard right wing people engaged to the Tories
