UPDATE: The new election looks likely to be held at the end of June rather than July as PM Mitsotakis says June 25th is a possible date. Also at the end of the video we way he is on course for another four terms; this should obviously be "another four-year term"!

@@secretname4190 No we aren't. Talk to an economist which actually researched the country. The government is doing a good job with propaganda abroad. The Greek economy is destroyed. It still hasn't reached its size before the crisis, and it's been 15 years. For the average EU country, being slightly above your size 15 years ago is terrible. Greece is below. Real average wages (in terms of purchasing power, especially when adjusting for real inflation) are the lowest they have ever been, similar to those at the worst points of the financial crisis. Unemployment is still incredibly high. 40% of the population is at or below the poverty rate. The current account is negative. Even at the height of the crisis it was positive. The debt is higher than ever. It even reached the worst debt/GDP ratio in the world. That was thankfully later lessened due to inflation, but inflation caused worse problems overall. Worst of all, all this happened when Greece was allowed to do whatever it wanted within reason for a while. Next year the fiscal limits are being reimposed. What makes you think Greece is doing good economically, apart from high growth (which is very low for a country supposedly exiting a crisis, not even reaching the pre-crisis size)?

@sybiz z you're wrong. Almost all countries where referring to skopje(or northern macedonia) as FYROM which stands for Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Only greeks called it skopje and the agreement for the name would pass whether it was Syriza or New Democracy or PASOK. But the greek people tied this ''national betrayal'' with Tsipras overlooking the fact that the rest would do the same
@ntonisa6636
@ntonisa6636 Жыл бұрын
@@zerofaith449 I can't see the comment you're responding to, but let correct you slightly even though I basically agree. Actually a majority of countries including 4 out of 5 UNSC(Russia,China, UK, US) had officially been calling it simply Macedonia (I'm not saying I was happy about this, but it's just a fact) ... the remaining (minority) of UN countries, *including Greece* , officially kept using the "FYRoM" formula of the 1995 "interim accord" (though in practice the "FYR" part was often omitted, except by Greece of course) which was the official name by which that country joined the UN. Unfortunately there was never a real open debate about this issue in Greece, for several reasons, resulting in a large majority of people being completely ignorant about a large number of important facts, even to the point of many Greeks delusionaly imagining that prior to the name agreement there used to be a country called "Skopia" until the traitor Tsipras "sold Macedonia" to them. This is because no other topic of public debate had ever been so thoroughly highjacked by "patriotic" demagogues who tried, quite successfully, to completely shut down any diverging narrative(or even basic undeniable facts) like this one was(and still is), turning what should be primarily a foreign policy (or at most a national security) issue into a three decade long collective psychosis.

Syriza had a very weak government and its best ministers were given the boot. For 4 years it governed a destroyed Greece that could have a great recovery without major global crisis and it actually screwed up in every way. After 2019 elections it only lied about what they had done and focused only on new democracy's flaws without saying anything about how to solve things (that themselves did too and much worse). So it's not actually a left wing party for the people but a lying coalition without competent people. Even those who hate new democracy political party they can't actually find anything good in syriza neither as a governing nor as an opposition party

Whats remarkable about this election which none mentions is that the essentiall 15% that Syriza lost did not go to New Democracy and only half of it went to it to political parties that managed to enter the parliament mostly to PASOK which is closer ideologically, the rest went to parties outside. Even though we saw an explosion of new parties, unheard of for Greek politics, they all got a lot of votes , on the other hand the more popular ones like Day25 that used to be in Parliament , lost votes. It clearly shows that people are searching for alternate solutions. Also without Syriza lose counted in because of the relative high participation of voters for Greek standards (60%) it really shows how divided Greek society is and remains very unsatisfied with the political system. Which means that up to 60% of people either dont want to vote or they will vote for tiny political parties.
@funram
@funram Жыл бұрын
This election looks a lot like the may 2012 election : polls were off by a lot, the main left wing party was way under what polls predicted, the KKE managed to get one of its best results ever, and many votes went to parties that didn't manage to get into Parliament, all leading to a new election next month. The main diference being, of course, that this time the ND is certain to hold a majority then.
@erggish
@erggish Жыл бұрын
It means that 60% of the people voted, not that 60% of the people want to vote for tiny political parties. You can't deduce anything about the ideas of the 40% that abstained. If they actually had a will, they would participate in the elections The remarkable thing (for the Greek standards) was that the ruling party increased its relative (+ ~1%) and absolute votes (+ ~200k) compared to 2019, even though it ruled for 4 years through the controversial periods of coronavirus and high inflation. I don't think this has ever happened before, at least not in the last 30 years. This just shows how absent was the agenda from the opposition parties for the actual electorate.. With the current results, in the next election ND can have the absolute majority in the parliament, and slightly reach the 180 needed to make changes to the constitution.

You forgot to mention the huge percentage of voters that didn't even go to vote. If I m correct, something like 40% of the voters didn't vote at all. So, Mitsotakis got 40% of the votes, from a pool of voters that represent 60% of the Greek population. Also, noteworthy to mention is that since 2012 there has never been an election held that attracted more than 65% of the total population to vote.

That's actually debated. The argument is that the 40% is an exaggeration since a lot of people change their voting address. That archive doesn't update unfortunately. @@Vardoulos Interesting take. People couldn't get their heads around the Dimitra program - not because it's too complex to understand, but because all other parties bashed it and spread fake information. Even Tsipras joined in on this propaganda, even though he knows exactly what the program is about (an early version of it was one of the reasons Varoufakis was asked to join Syriza back then). No matter what approach Varoufakis would have taken, the average voter still thinks he's the one to blame for the capital controls and third memorandum. What pisses me off the most, though, is how everyone keeps mentioning Syriza's mistakes from '15 over and over again, as if New Democracy or PASOK weren't the ones who turned Greece to shit.

Well partly the reason why new democracy got so many votes is that every other party is a juvenile fraternity that their policies basically come down to " will do exactly the opposite of what the current party in power will do , no matter what that is , you cure cancer ? I will create a new type !"

New Democracy: Center-Right pro EU and capitalist. Many of their policies would be considered liberal by US standards at the same time they cater to the conservative portion of the Greek population. SYRIZA: Populist left. They outright destroyed the middle class when they were in charge. PASOK: Center left. Formerly one of the most popular political parties. They are by and large associated with corruption and spending insane amounts of money that led the country into the fiscal disaster (New Democracy is co-guilty of this). KKE: Communist Party. They envision a classless society with no plan or realistic propositions. They are not interested in taking over leadership, they instead prefer protesting and organising strikes. They are anti-NATO, anti-EU, anti-American, pro-Russian. Greek Solution: Nationalistic populist far right party.

Nea Dimkoratia is your typical European conservative party. Economically liberal, socially conservative, they seek privatization, lower taxation, less social benefits, are unwelcoming to migrants from the Middle East and Africa, and want a stronger military. The only good thing about them is that they are smart about foreign relations and therefore EU-friendly.

Very good video, but you didn't explain the reasons for this outcome. In my opinion, the top reasons for this historic win for ND are as follows: First, there was a lack of a serious proposal from Syriza for forming a government, which left the country facing the prospect of continuous elections with no clear winner. Second, the opposition was in a state of constant disarray. For example, just two days before the elections, Giorgos Katrougalos stated on a panel that Syriza's plan was to significantly increase taxes on self-employed individuals and the middle class, which resulted in his expulsion from the party. Third, Syriza is a left-wing party that came to power as a result of the anger and discontent caused by the economic crisis and the memorandum, so their policies lean further to the left compared to other left-wing parties in the EU.

An important point that I want to emphasize regarding the election result is that the official opposition party (SYRIZA) spent a significant amount of time on ideological and personal attacks against the Prime Minister, while his party (New Democracy) effectively utilized the European Union's recovery fund and had the argument of the investment grade in their favor. However, there remains a question as to whether they will face fiscal austerity in the new four-year term and how they will manage the wiretapping scandal, which was the main argument of the third-ranked party (PASOK). PASOK gained ground in the center-left space because they had a better programmatic campaign than SYRIZA.

I am from Greece and the new system was immediately labeled as a failure and most people agree that SYRIZA passed it in bad faith. Basically it technically aims at increase collaboration between parties to make coalition governments. However SYRIZA basically begs every single other party to make a coalition including the far right ones just so that it can make a majority. This would result in a very unstable government and no party actually wants to collaborate with SYRIZA. Also, this law doesn't work with the greek constitution that only gives parties 3 days to form a coalition which is impossible. The old system creates strong governments and avoid what we see in other countries where there are months with no government. One of the reasons why ND saw an increase in their votes is because the people voted against SYRIZA specifically to vote against the new system

in the first elections, it goes with votes. when we vote, we vote for the party and for the MP of our district. so at the end if a party gets 3 seats in our district, the top 3 voted members will get those seats. If there cant be a goverment formed and there are second elections, we only vote for party. the party president will choose who will take a parliament spot as he wishes. so this which u described is very plausible. sill i think they will choose the ones with the highest votes anyway...

Ideas that would most likely turn Greece into a theocratic dystopia. I wish I was joking. Some facts to help you understand how Greek people think. On 20 February just 10 days before the deadly train disaster happen,some members of the opposition party and the parliament in general, set some safety issues about public transportation and specifically about the safety of trains.The minister of transportation responded "I feel ashamed that you set safety issues, and I can assure you the train system works with the highest safety standards" 10 days later 2 trains crashed frontally and hundreds of young people died. He resigned 2 days later from the ministry. However he was again candidate and the Greek people voted for him bringing him in the 1st place with insane difference from the 2nd in his region just 2 months after this tragic event. As a Greek I feel so embarrassed.

As a Greek I feel embarrassed about the opposition weaponizing the accident against the current government. I voted for ND this time for the first time in my life because of this. And while the accident is definitely ND's fault to an extent, it is no less the fault of the previous governments in the past 30-40 years, as well as regular people who are being paid but not doing their duties in the public sector, which is nothing new in Greece. Personally, I cannot imagine the minister of ANY party giving priority to trains, that haven't caused accidents in decades, over all the other issues that get air time in the media. Meanwhile, the country has been doing well these 4 years, for the first time in one and a half decades. All that despite the pandemic, the crisis in Evros and the crisis in energy & food caused by Russia's new war. So yeah, I think this is populism and it is unfairly blamed on this government. Even if I assume that the minister of transportation is a bad minister. My 2 cents.
@aantony2001
@aantony2001 Жыл бұрын
@@zhshsG7 It's by far the fault of the current government more than any others, even if they all are to blame. The Minister was informed of the problems in Parliament, and instead of fixing them he criticised the opposition for bringing them up. The rail workers were talking about the issues and going on strikes about them, and the government, instead of fixing them, criticised the workers. The manager responsible for the safety of the network protested about the dangers. After nothing being done, he resigned, no longer being able to be responsible for a government doing nothing. A bunch of other train accidents occured before the deadly one. Thankfully nobody died then, but the government did nothing, they waited for people to die first. Just after the current government was elected, there was a fire in the local center for managing train traffic. It was not fixed. The day after the accident, Mitsotakis had scheduled the presentation of the new safety system for trains in Northern Greece. There was no such system. He was going to lie about there being one, but he was preempted by the children dying. After the accident, the government said sorry, at the same time recognising no mistakes (making it meaningless and insulting). It stopped the trains until they could be fixed. They weren't fixed. They just told people they were fixed, and gave workers documents to sign, saying they knew about the problems, so they could be responsible in the case of a new accident. All these are the responsibility of the current government and nobody else. There were also long-standing problems caused by all previous governments (most of the previous governments also being lead by the current party in power). Long-standing in general are the responsibility of those that cause then, and everybody after that doesn't fix them. So the current government is also at fault for all the old mistakes it didn't fix, together with the ones that caused them, as well as for the ones that it did fix. You also absolutely don't have to vote for any of the parties that caused these long-standing problems. In the 21st century, we have had three government parties, ND (12 years), PASOK (7 years), and SYRIZA (4 years). You can vote for a multitude of other parties that have not destroyed the country. Thankfully, there is a lot of discussion due to the result, and we will have another election, so your vote isn't set in stone. You can vote something different, not among these three parties, in the next election.

Also something you didnt mention but I feel worth noting, is that only around 60% of the people (that were supposed to vote) voted.

The real issue with Greece corrupt political system won't be addressed by neither of those parties winning. The end result is the same and unless this drastically changes Greece will always be a lesser version of what it can be and ultimately the people will suffer for it.

Νίκο η αλήθεια ειναι πως σε αυτές τις εκλογές συμμετείχε το 60% που σημαίνει μάλιστα και 3% αύξηση από το 2019.

@@Giorgos.

Niko, you are very wrong. 60,92% of the citizens *participated* in the national vote. Which is more than the last two elections. 8 years ago! In 2019 it was 57,78% (winner Nea Dimokratia) In 2015 it was 56,16% (winner SYRIZA) In 2012 it was 62,49% (winner Nea Dimokratia)
