The buses have just been replaced by brand new battery electric ones. City wide free wifi was installed. The High Speed Rail line to the capital is on schedule and due to open next month - £15 to go 300 miles at 200mph. Dentists here are advertising for clients - £250 for an implant £100 for a white zircon filling - I know cos I just booked some work for Tuesday next week. GDP growth is 2.4% this year Totally different government structure here - its massively devolved, my city is run by the mayor of MY city. My region is run by the governor of the region. Only truly national things and foreign policy are run by the national govt

The video is informative and presents numerous facts, but it overlooks a crucial aspect: the ongoing conflict between Boiko Borissov and the country's general prosecutor, Ivan Geshev. Since Borissov assumed power, he and his corrupt associates have wielded control over the courts and the judicial system. This control has shielded them from prosecution on numerous occasions. However, a few months ago, a rift emerged between Borissov and Geshev, who were previously close allies. As a result, Borissov found himself with limited options and had no choice but to participate in the new government, despite the other parties openly discussing their anti-corruption stance and opposition to Borissov and his allies. Failure to form a government would result in Borissov losing his deputy immunity and facing arrest and prosecution. This underlying reason compelled Borissov's party to agree to the formation of a government, despite leaked discussions from other parties acknowledging Borissov as an adversary they must keep close.

Another crucial fact that the video doesn't mention at all is Vazrazhdane. This is a pro-Russian and increasingly pro-Putin, anti-EU and anti-NATO quasi-fascist party that has been gaining ground in every single election in the past two years. They started with barely 4% and are not at 15%, the third largest in Parliament. That's the main reason GERB and the anti-corruption coalition decided to form a grand coalition - if the political deadlock continued, 6 months from now Bulgaria could've been ruled by a pro-Russian fascist party that would immediately leave the EU and NATO.

While Borisov is in the government the parliament will be reluctant to strip him off of his immunity because this would probably cause a collapse of the government and more political chaos. By allying himself with the anti-corruption coalition Borisov is less likely to be attacked by his new partners.

Great video, just wanted to correct some minor facts: - The new government is not a Grand Coalition. It is more similar to what is in power in Scotland, where one party (GERB) isn't officially in government and just supporting it, but it does have a minister - GERB were not in power for one year around 2014 - PP-DB is realistically 4 parties, PP and the 3 in DB. Parties like VOLT and SEK are generally irrelevant and only got seats because they allied with PP to give them a list to run on

Also the fact should be mentioned, that the only GERB minister in office is Mariya Gabriel, vice prime-minister, minister of foreign affairs and to be prime-minister after 9 months. It's speculated, and also mentioned in the leaked recordings, that in exchange for support in the cabient and no other ministers Parliament must protect (or delay) the revocation of Borissov's MP immunity

This report is full of lies. There are NO ANTI-CORRUPTION PARTIES in Bulgaria! The most corrupted ones are exactly the once who claims that are fighting corruption. The PP party was created by the extremely corrupted President Radev, and they had the most expensive election campaign in the history of Bulgaria, paid lavishly by the same oligarchs who previously supported Borisov. In fact , their campaigned was 5 times more expensive than the GERB campaign, a party who is supposed to have been on power for 12 years and have supposedly creaming lots of money. The PP party had only being in power for 7 months in a coalition with other 3 parties? Can you explain where all the money came from? Their lieders of PP- Asen Vasilev and Kiril Petkov, disregarded the constitution several times, stopped all the infrastructural project in the country and redirected all the money towards their personal offshore bank accounts and paying back the oligarchs. So now let me explained, as obviously you are not as brilliant as you claimed! The whole turbulences started not because some brave harts wanted to fight corruption. No, no, no. Borisov started to cream for his party more than he was giving to the oligarchs. Also , he allowed the Chief Prosecutor to start with the prosecution of several of this Oligarchs. The prosecutor froze their assets, in total around 5 billion euro! Several of them fled the country and went to Dubai, Serbia and South Africa. From where they started fighting the Prosecutor. Two of the oligarchs that stayed in Bulgaria were in a war between each other for the precious EU resources. After 2 and a half years of turbulences, all the oligarchs and leaders of organised crime groups came together realizing their money has dwindle in this war, Radev has creamed a lot of their profits from illegal drug market. The EU money has stopped, the economy is in downturn. So they decided to stop the war between them and united efforts to sack the Chief Prosecutor . Thus the government was formed between the TWO MOST CORRUPTED PARTIES IN BULGARIA. By the way , one of the mafia bosses - Kuro, who recently was killed in South Africa with his wife and a child, was recorded (in an official investigation) saying the Asen Vasilev and Kiril Petkov work for him! This recording was send to the media which pretended to have never received it, as they are paid by the same criminals. Only small and independent medias played it. Should I conclude that you are not independent and you have been paid by the same people? Clearly!

They may have used the 2021 index. In 2021 Bulgaria got a score of 42/100, Hungary 43/100. In 2022 it was the other way round. At the moment the difference in corruption level between the two countries is so small it's insignificant but that won't last. Bulgaria hasn't changed much but still shows a positive trend. Hungary on the other hand is going down fast.

@Garrus Vakarian Would've been ok if that was the only thing they got wrong but unfortunately the whole video seemed like they were trying to paint a picture. Lots of other inaccuracies like for instance the bit about Borissov being "voted out" of cabinet in 2021 when his mandate just ended and it was time for new elections. Or the poll they cited at 6:44; they also used it in their video on Slovakia a couple weeks ago and said 44% of Slovaks disagree with the Russia sanctions, making it the highest figure in the EU; now they're using the support metric because it fits the narrative better.

Democracy can certainly be messy and chaotic, but it also offers the chance to throw the bums out when they step too far out of line as well as an independent judiciary to take your disputes to and get a (more or less) fair hearing.

Problem is that while in election season, Bulgaria has no active parliament (no representation or means to pass laws) and the government is appointed by the president, who was not elected to form governments but rather to be a symbolic unifying figure. That presidential government has no parliamentary control or any opposition during election season. This meant Radev ruled the country for two years entirely unopposed

Overcoming corruption and staving off the power vacuum is not an easy task, I wish the Bulgarian people a lot of patience and strength, I also would like to point out that now the real work of fending off corruption and keeping it at bay begins and it will need to be continued. Yes, it needs to be continous work to maintain anti corruption efforts, I as a German can only point out that we were too complacent and now the corruption becomes blatand here adn it will be even more work to get it routed and purged, then it would have been to maintain it in first place.

It's idea is to create a goverment for year and a half, then to go back to new elections. During this time to solve: - the deadlock on Ukraine's aid(as pro- russia parties and the president are against it) - the deadlock on EU next generation legal binding policies(laws and regulations) - the deadlock on the state budget(we haven't one in the moment and we use the old one of 2022) - the deadlock from the populist parties(Trifonov or Kostadinov and the like by normalising the state and leave no place for them to thrive)

Well, I am a bulgarian, so thank you for talking about these things publicly. Thank you for the journalism! I might however argue a bit with your presentation. Not to offend your team but the summary is pretty shallow and it actually needs more analyis. I can understand where these problems come from. The reality is that all bulgarian media are pretty closed when it comes to providing information in other languages so it might be very hard for independent english speaking media like yours to actually find good soruces of information. Please, take in mind the above when researching topics related to Bulgaria. In practice the english speaking people in Bulgaria are not less proportionally than the english speaking people in Germany, let's say. Thus, my suggestion for you is to use some translation tools when searching for info, then targeting the relevant sources and then hiring a bulgarian translator to handle the info. I don't know much about your financial possibilities and if you actually have the budget to hire foreign translators, but I am pretty open to donating and I think other bulgarians will be open to do it, too. Someone might argue with me but media in Bulgaria are under extreme pressure from both some USA governmental organisations and the Russian FSB. What I say in the above line is highly speculative as you can see and is a pretty bold claim but if you spend a month in Bulgaria for investigative journalism I am 100% sure you will find out some really disturbing stuff happening right here. I am not talking about minor political situations. I am talking about major international affairs. Our media really puts everything important under the carpet being scared of the consequences and it is not because of local political pressure. It is, as I previously said, because they are between the sledge and the hammer when it comes to international affairs. Almost all the political parties (you are talking about in the video) have some international ties, either to the USA government or to the Russaian FSB. Most of the parties are directly linked to the Russian FSB. (It is just my claim and I am no one. Also I do not intend to prove it in any way.) Most of these parties, while presenting themselves as "anti-corruption" ones are actually pro-russian to their core. These are the things that made the political situation in Bulgaria so complicated. Gratitude for the report. Pretty accurate depiction of our political situation. The only detail missing from the picture was oligarch Delyan Peevski (sanctioned by UK&US) and his political party. The group around him have strong pull, and usually flies under the radar of international media. The interesting thing will happen ~9 months from now. There seems to be an agreement between the parties to share the leadership role and they will do it through resignations, an informal approach since there is no apparent route to do this in the constitution. If this coalition survives the first and second exchange of power between each other, then we've got a stable government. If not, things will collapse and we'll again be going to the voting booths soon enough.

Very important correction: the word "coalition" implies that both GERB and the Harvards have equal ministers in government and vote together on laws in Parliament. This however is not the case. GERB has only one minister in the cabinet, the Harverds - just three. Everyone else is a non-party expert. Secondly, both parties DO NOT vote together on many laws, in fact, there were few very important laws which caused huge disagreements between the two parties in Parliament. Therefor we don't have a classical coalition here. It's a minority government.

Bulgarian here - we chose the those two Harvard Gradiates to remove Boiko Borisov (as you mentioned in the video - alwfaly corupt polititian, who is close with the ENP party) and they almost did. As a bulgarian living in Bulgaria, I have bad news for you - this new chimera government (since it is multiheaded and an abomination) won't last long. Even if we put to the side the opposition organising protests or simply the expected protests that will arise due to the rising cost of living, the members of the government can not stand each other. It is highly expected that once they hit the first major obstacle (voting in a new budget which they aim to have only a 3% deficit), they will start mudslinging at each other, if not worse. There is no way they can lower the budget deficit unless they impose new taxes or cut even more the social benefits of the whole country (healthcare, education and so on). As the new governement is stricly pro-oligarchy, new taxes on the rich are out of the question. The majority of the population, especially outside of the capital of Sofia, is highly-opposed to giving away their benefits for the supposedly better EU integration (they want to introduce the euro in Bulgaria as national currency) and more military aid for Ukraine. Also the foreign policy is highly at odds with the national humors - many are against military aid (more than 50%), a lot of people fear that accepting the euro will make them even poorer as prices will be in euro, but salaries will remain at their old level in leva(BGN). Not to mention that people are pro-peace, not pro-war - we want to see negotiations, not more weapons and deaths on all sides.

The Services are currently infiltrated by Russian influencers, the new parties (who are pro-European) were discussing the importance of cleansing all Services as a matter of urgency during a private party conversation which was quite blunt. That got leaked by a mole and certain phrases got in the news and were twisted to sound threatening. In reality, every government assigns new heads of Services when they come into power so of course they would want to change the current ones. In fact, the current heads of Services were hired by the temporary government put together by the pro-Russian president (to cover during elections) even though they don't have the right to do that according to the consistution so really all those people should not be there in the first place

On the taped conference that came out (5-hour long recording of a head party meeting of PP-DB) they literally said "We want to replace the heads of the security services so we can control them." They did not say they are concerned about national security, just whether they can control themselves the security services. They even mentioned that the new heads of the security services were agreed upon after "a meeting with the embassies". Which made them look and sound absurd to the whole of Bulgaria and abroad.

In spite of this fact, yesterday the government sent a Bulgarian state airplane to take Zelensky from Moldova. But when a Bulgarian needs emergency transportation, the government can't send a single helicopter or plane to transport the person to a hospital. Later that day, the government sold the equipment for our nuclear power plant (which costs 12 billion BGN) to Ukraine for just 1.2 Billion. And lastly, they agreed to send Ukraine arms from Bulgaria's army reserves, thus leaving our already outdated and powerless army pretty much without any shells. Meanwhile, the country barely managed to shrink the budget deficit to 3% (it was 5% at first but they cut down expenditures). The capital and most major cities are crowded with beggars, who the government did nothing for, and Bulgarians pay some of the highest prices for food and electricity, while having the lowest salaries in the EU. My problem is not Ukraine. My problem is that it's morally, politically and economically wrong to send aid to another country, when your own country needs it just as much. Our politicians are not humanists. They were elected to care for Bulgarians. They are traitors!

Guys you used old charts, Bulgaria is no longer the most corrupt country in EU it is actually Hungary at the moment. You missed one important part being the General Prosecutor indirectlly declaring war on the Government by demanding their immunity and to be prosecuted. In response, the government parties are making law changes and a planned constitutional change as the General Prosecutor can technically is very hard to be removed and nobody controls him. You further missed the Bulgarian protest outrage when the Pro-Russian President refused to shake the hand of the current prime minsiter Nikolai Denkov when handing in the papers for Government formation and were kicked out of the presidency. After that happened in less then 24 hours between 5000-10000 people went in front the presidency chanting this is not Moscow. Which lead to the We Continue the change joining the protest and people showing support for the formation of Government. The next day Borisov of Gerb defrosted the negotiations and the Government was formed. To paralise the new Government the president fired the same day all the assistant care take ministers and left the new ministers with no actual team and suspecious spending of huge amount of money was done in 3 days which the prime minister will conduct investigations. The Finance Minister is challenged to create a budget of 3% deficit and has 30 days to make a budget for 2023 as the country runs on no actual budget but on extended one. After the 30 days for the creation budget for 2023 he has 2-3 months to create the budget for 2024 which due to the mp3 law in Bulgaria on 50% of average salary the country will experience a minimum of 18 to 23% increase in minimum salary. Another important aspect is that the Government has Military Professor Tagarev as Defense Minsiter who is very pro-Ukraine. Please update the video

I listened to a Bulgarian Major engineers interview on Railways and train transport, he commented about some companies can't use the railways from Bulgaria to central Europe to export , because of poor maintenance at the area above Vidin. It is also worth mentioning that with each new general election fewer and fewer people go to the polls, so the turnout is declining. This is bad news for democracy because it means that you get more value out of buying votes from poor citizens (something that is unfortunately a common practice in Bulgarian elections). This is one of the reasons why the anti-corruption pro-democracy coalition agreed to form a government with Borisov's party. To avoid new elections and more money-driven election results.
