How many of you are aware that around 1970,, Billy was partners in a musical duo called The Humblebums? His partner was none other than the brilliant Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty (16 April 1947-.4 January 2011.) This was before Gerry's days as a cofounder of Stealer's Wheel (Stuck in the Middle with You) and as a very succesful solo performer (Baker Street, Right Down the Line, Night Owl, Home and Dry, and on and on.) R.I.P. Billy sang, played the banjo, and told jokes. Gerry was the one who encouraged Billy to pursue a career in comedy. The rest is performance history...

My first school was opposite to where Billy lived. Being a dreamer, I would look at the windows of that tenement building and occasionally see a man near a window scratching his whatnots. I thought that man was on a picture in my grandmother's house. He looked similar. I could, years later, identify that man as Billy. The picture my grandmother had was of Jesus.

I was wondering why it seemed that Billy was losing his edge. He's not up to his old quick wit & brazen sense of nonsense here. But now I know it's the Parkinson's. My brother-in-law survived Parkinson's Disease for a remarkable 25 years, but it destroyed his vibrant personality progressively. It was rough for him & those around him who knew it wasn't going to get better. The mind's still there, but everything else is gradually lost. I prefer to remember the best moments in memories of those like my brother-in-law, Robin Williams & Billy Connolly for what they gave rather than what they lost.
