As I watch this I realize a big part of why it actually was what it was (remember, no one there thought it was real till Will sat back down again and started yelling) was it was this weird collision between two things that usually coexist but here came to a clash: 1. The idea that “celebrities don’t have to deal with regular people shit” like they have security and 2. The idea that “if you’re rich and famous enough you can get away with anything.” To watch the air get sucked out of the room as people realized it wasn’t a bit, and then to see things sort of carry on uninterrupted with everyone there unsure what to do, was just such a bizarre and paradoxical moment because at the same time it shit on the idea that the Oscar’s is this opulent safe haven and also reinforced the idea that if you’re Will Smith, you can get up from the audience, slap someone, sit back down, and yell profanities on live tv without any immediate consequences.

this just reminded me of a time in middle school when i was in the bathroom trying to pee (as one does) before class started and two girls were at each other's throats, and pulling hair over some guy... while i was in the stall like ( ° ͜ʖ °) they made me late, too. unforgivable

Its weird that normally in comedy, its frowned upon to charge the stage. Always looks bad. its just cuz its a famous person that he had no consequence. I also agree it was hilarious, though

Wrong. Are you white? Because I think unless you are POC and have experience with comedy and or how disrespect is handled outside of white existence, the I think you should stfu

It’s because it’s a famous person it has no consequences, but it’s also because it’s a famous person that people actually give a shit. If this was some bloke down a pub, it would be like if a tree fell in a forest with nobody around.

I agree with Noel. Why is it the wildest thing that Chris rock got slapped when everyday people get hit for doing their job? I agree with Cody that will smith should have been thrown out.

i think my biggest irritation with this was the whole “HES A COMEDIAN, IT WAS A JOKE” …and? Can we stop pretending that comedy can never be harmful or come from ill intent? Also this whole situation was FUNNY, yet the same ppl saying it was a joke can’t see the humor in the oscars letting chris get bitch slapped ? 😭
@sara-mh8hl2 жыл бұрын
“‘He’s a comedian, it was a joke’ …and?” And nothing. Nobody pretended that comedy can never be harmful or come from ill intent - but that wasn’t the case here. It was a simple joke from a comedian and his job is to make jokes, that’s why rational people following pointed that out.
