Metro line 318 was a former limited stop bus route that was in service from October 1998 till December 2000. This line ran along 6th street and Whittier Blvd from Wilshire/Western in Downtown Los Angeles to Brea Mall in The City of Brea via Whittier and La Habra Boulevard's (MTRC, 2010). The line was previously known as the 470/471 Los Angeles/Puente Hills/Brea Express since the 1980s till October 1998.
Mid September of 2000, during the MTA strike, Montebello municipal bus route 10 took over the eastern portion of MTA line 318 from Passons and Whittier Boulevard's to Whittwood Center in Whittier. When the MTA strike was over in October 2000, for three months Metro and Montebello had routes that were duplication of services on Whittier Blvd. By the end of the year, line 318 was cancelled due to Montebello bus services on Whittier Blvd and Metro Rapid 720 which started service six months earlier.
Late 1990s and early 2000s the MTA board either eliminated or handed over countless of bus routes that services cities near or outside the county border to local municipal bus agencies in order to concentrate more on Los Angeles rail development (Grinberg, 2006). Riverside County Transportation Commission chairman Bob Buster, observing the slow dismantling of the MTA, remarked, “Los Angeles is like a modern-day Roman Empire, Rome takes care of itself first and the provinces last.” This was a reference to former Metro express line 496 Long Beach/Los Angeles to San Bernardino being canceled in January of 1998 (MTRC, 2010).

The Flxible Metro series buses the 2500 - 2700's series had Cummins L10 engines with VoithD863 Transmissions while the 2800 - 2936 series were equipped with the 6V92TA and 6L71TA DDEC Engines with the VR731 Allison Transmissions before they renamed LACMTA Los Angeles County Transit Authority they were SCRTD Southern California Rapid Transit District back then

The good old 318. It's such a shame it got canceled due to the debut of metro rapid line 720. Hopefully metro reinstates metro bus service along Whittier blvd between east LA and the city of Whittier via an extension of line 18, either it being by weekends or as late overnight service.

We are hoping that OCTA will do a BRT on Beach Blvd that ends at Whittwood Transit Center. The MTA may want to extended Metro Rapid 720 to Whittwood Transit Center thus connecting Santa Monica to Huntington Beach via BRT MTA/OCTA.

The Metropolitan Network I don't think metro will extend the 720 any further. It's current route between SaMo and Commerce is over 2 hrs long, and it's suffers from heavy traffic in the Westside. Perhaps once the purple line heads to Westwood, metro might reinstate service along Whittier blvd between the City of Whittier and downtown LA as rapid line 718. Who knows what might happen, but never say never.....😮

NJ transit corporation should have ordered 20 Metro C buses with the 6L71TA DDEC engine with the VR731 Allison Transmission the numbers would have been 6969 - 1999 in 1990 for all the Garages even Egg Harbor twp garage

Eventually they extended the 18 all the way to Whitwood Mall for a couple years but cancelled it east of Montebello Station. The MBL line 10 took over what is now it’s current route.

It used to be one bus from Downtown LA to Brea mall and would take less than 2 hours. Now you have to take 4 buses all in different agencies and the time would be 3:30 to 4:30 hours to get you there. Thanks for the comment.

Allen Chevez budget cuts. It was a 2+ hour ride to Brea from Downtown/WestLake area. Montebello Bus Line 10 already went that way but only to Pico Rivera. Alot of lines from municipal bus agencies here in LA County came from Metro lines they couldn’t afford to keep. Plus traffic has gotten so much worse especially 00’s.

Allen Chevez yup they were. Foothill Transit began in 1988 when budgets cuts happened, losing all the lines that connected the SGV and beyond. Most of the lines were part of SCRTD , which then became MTA in 1993.

Really good footage. I was hoping to see 2737, but I guess 2734 is as close as it gets. 2734 seemed to have a hardcore trans. slip when passing by, 2846's 6L71TA sounded soooooo nice with the fan on and 2722's Cummins L10 was super bassy and it had a "sad" engine fan.

Yes but the L10 with the 863 retarder is just pure Flxible, from the bassy unique sounds across the board that it makes to that jerky 1st to 2nd gear change to that famous wind down that happens 5 seconds coming to a stop that just vibrates the whole bus!

Yea L10's sound different in Flxibles compared to Gillig Phantoms, Orion V's & New Flyer D40's. They have a very unique bass, which sorta reminds me of European L10 buses.

That model was Flxible's answer to the GM RTS II. Looks good except for the windshield. But the bus slopes towards the front and it's a bouncy boat of a bread box bus! As in Miami so in L.A.: "Metro Bus is mean to us!"

In my alternative Metro system map, my Line 18 Owl service is extended to Whittwood Center. The segment east of Whittier is replaced by Metro Line 285. My Line 285 would operate between PHM to Fullerton MLK station via the shuttle version of Line 471 til Central/Brea, then divert via Brea Bl (with the deviation to Brea Mall) (irl this is served by OCTA Line 143). My Line 285 will have late evening service with (30 min. weekdays), (50-60 on weekends). Also in my AU, my Foothill Transit system map is different. It is smaller as it won't operate west of Eastland Mall, some will continue to go as far west to Downtown LA. Service west of Eastland Mall is operated by Metro. Some Metro lines goes as far to Chino and Montclair. I might make a video about this soon.

The former late night owl service for Metro Line 18 was always semi packed around the hours of 1-3 am east of Norwalk Blvd along Whittier Blvd. There were riders using the system that late of night. We would like to see OCTA extend Bravo 529 or local 29 service to Whittwood Center at least on an hourly basis.

I remember these buses. I was still young when they were in service and now I miss them so badly. At least Scott Richards (if I remember his name correctly) from Riverside saved bus #2737 which is awesome and brings back memories. I remembered watching this video with no dislikes on February and I annoyed some loser or snowflake managed to hit the dislike button for no reason. Either way, I really enjoyed your content.

Western and Whittier Blvd is that stop between Hadley and Broadway. That stop is now served by MBL Line 10.
