It's not intended to be a deep dive to include things like exact damages relative to different enemies.

I love this channel. 3 pieces of information for future viewers. There is another shed in the top left which is easy to pattern and get scrolls from in case you lost them from previous levels. The second is you can duck under the lighting up front and then just jump on the treads. LEAVE THE FOOT SOLDIER ALONE! He cannot hit you on the treads. You can take out the 2 guns the front and back lightning forks if you like, the door for the foot soldiers and then it’s just you and the eye all day. Finally when facing Shredder, you can just fall to the left, line up with your face just to the right in front of the satellite dish, and just spam attack. Shredder falls right in front of you and has no chance to attack - easiest boss in the game and you can beat him with Raph just for the lol’s.

I never found the water level all that hard. The rest of the game is damn near impossible unless you have the patience of a saint. Also, Donatello is the only turtle worth playing as here. This game is kinda sad for me, because if it was anything like the first level all the way through, this would've been one of the best NES titles.

Hey now, some legit great music came out of the Out of Their Shells tour. Also, I might be weird but I never really found this WATERLEVEL to be that hard, honestly. Always fascinating to see a very different path through the airport level, too. 40:33.... ;)

On a side note, i read an article years ago about an interview that was done with the creators. They said this was the last game they created with such difficult gameplay because of all the complaints. I think i speak for most 10 year olds that never made it past the water level lol.

As counter-intuitive as the NES taught us to treat it, somehow they still expected us to hurl ourselves into open pits to progress in levels as if we were supposed to forget what it would do in literally every other game we ever played. Enormous run-on sentence ⬆️

I had this game as a kid and actually managed to beat the water level. I remember being so excited the first time I did it. I never got past the airport level though. I may have to load it up and give it a try and see if I can make it now! Thanks for the great video.

Have not heard that one, good call. Generally speaking as long as you refill your turtles' health in between the tunnels if you don't find it the first (or second) time you should be okay.

Two little tidbits I'd like to add: 1) Most people whom played this game probably never had the manual or lost it, so the main plot is that Shredder's Life-Transformer Ray Gun has the capability to return Splinter to his human self as Hamato Yoshi (as per the '87 animated series), so the Turtles are after it. Of course, as mentioned in the vid, it's also capable of reverting the Turtles as well. 2) As Fluff mentioned, then 1990 Live Action Film was not only the highest grossing independent film of its time, it held that record for nearly a decade until The Blair Witch Project came out.

Like to know something? In Japan, this game isn't called TMNT (suffice to say associated with it) but rather "Legend of the Turtle Ninjas". Which explains a lot of the out-of-place enemies and why it is a rather loose adaptation of the Turtle mythos in the localization.

A minor, but interesting from a video game history, note concerning the bit about Konami forming Ultra as a shell company to get more games on the NES: When Nintendo rebranded the Famicom in the mid-80's into the Nintendo Entertainment System to break into the North American market, they did everything they could to make it seem less like a video game console and more like a multimedia/edutainment system, including sticking the ROB robot in as a pack in item to trick parents into thinking it was something more than it was. They practically had to do this because just two years before they attempted to launch the NES in North America, the video game crash mostly caused by Atari had just happened, consumers were really, really weary about getting a new video game console, and retailers were still smarting from having to mark their Atari 2600 games down to $1 each just to get rid of them. Now, how this ties into Konami creating Ultra? One of the main reasons the crash happened was actually just how many bad games had flooded the market for the Atari 2600 and basically had cratered the public perception of video game quality. The whole ET debacle played a part, but the deluge of shovelware was a bigger player. So, Nintendo of America looked at this, and limited their third party partners to five games a year in hopes of avoiding yet another pitfall Atari had stepped in. By the time they released the SNES, the stigma around video games was pretty much gone, so they could do away with that rule. Also note that only Nintendo of America had the five games per year rule in place. Nintendo of Japan had no such rule.

Yeah a lot of the "experts" in the entertainment market decided video games were pretty much dead by the time the NES came about, which is why when they did the soft launch in New York City in American in late 1985, Nintendo was very careful about how they marketed it and which of the Black Box titles they chose to release and highlight with it, like Baseball.

I think I passed the water level as a kid but didn't make it past mecha turtle. One of my most vivid memories of this game is being so freaked out by the eyeball that I took out the game and threw it against the wall while screaming in terror. Luckily the game still worked and I eventually got over my fear of floating eyeballs.

Haha I love that initial reaction to those Eye enemies. Yeah admittedly the water/dam level just bled a lot of players dry (no pun intended) and set them up for a rough time on the next level where it was only going to get tougher.

I agree about Donnie being MVT. I tend to play as follows: Leo and Donnie to be kept alive at all cost. Mike and Raph are glorified meat shields.

Yep, I'll take Leo's reach over any damage advantage the short ranged guys have. That's why I give Mike and Raph the scroll weapons; they're relatively impractical with their lack of reach so I just pull them out when Don's (or Leo's) taken too much damage.

There was a turtle RPG game and at the time there was the graphic novel that featured the turtles on a different planet with different looking creatures so they mostly based them off of that. Even the cover of the game is based off of the graphic novel when they were fighting off the Utrons. Oddly enough this was suppose to be a different game originally featuring some top commando group killing some weird alien creatures that well are planning to take over the planet and you had to fight and kill them to save the world. I guess when Konami aka Ultra got the okay for the TMNT game they had a time crunch and went okay man change it up a bit and add the turtles and shredder etc.

Yeah that's a good point; it was just funny to me being mostly familiar with the cartoon like so many kids and seeing all of these rando enemies but you are absolutely correct that these enemies were pulled from the graphic novel(s). And yeah, I can see the framework for what you mentioned. It's crazy how many games back then were made like that, intended to be something else then they got licensing for some property and shoehorned the sprites in, ha.

lol that water level was definitely full of danger, but honestly as a kid I didn't find that one too hard. Once you learn a few tricks and know where the bombs are, it's a bit upptiy but not too difficult. I could never get through the last stage though. Even playing as an adult, I was like yeap little me didn't suck. At least not too bad. This is just impossible. Of course I didn't know about the OP items you needed to stock up on ahead of time back then. Great class as always, Professor!

Death Hallway is a very apt description of it especially with the damage they're dealing. With the duck technique like we show (and a little luck) you can get through without having to attack until it gets really tight right at the end.

It's certainly doable if you keep your turtles healthy, swap between them responsibly, and collect scroll weapons. Just that one nasty room with the spiked walls is very cheap, ha.

With me I beat the water level as a kid and only got to stage 3 quite a few times. I ended up beating this game as an adult. Also another interesting tip is if Mike, Leo or Don are down to 1/2 life or below they do more dmg however if Ralph goes down to 1/2 or below he does less dmg.

That's true, the half life makes those three do more damage. It's a very strange setup admittedly, like Ultra (Konami) just threw a bunch of numbers in a hat and drew them randomly to determine that, heh.

I'm all of four minutes in and already there's a glaring error. Rafael has the 2nd strongest weapon behind Donnie. We know this because they're the only two who can kill the weird red enemies with one hit in the later stages

Also, you only need to pick up the grappling hook (tight rope) once. There is no "stocking up" needed

Why stock up on grappling ropes just to get the mid-air scroll weapon between buildings, when you had an easier scroll weapon location 18:07 There is also a scroll weapon in the second barn that wasn't shown, and if one doesn't drop down into the floor spike route inside the technodrome, then the longer alternate route up the ladder 43:31 will also eventually lead towards a scroll weapon (and the pizza that was missed at 44:30 )

Definitely fair; I didn't get into the nitty gritty on exact damages. And the grappling hook stocking is for the building/specific route I recommend for stocking on scroll weapons which makes the game a lot easier. That route isn't the most efficient for stocking scroll weapons (though it's not far off), but I believe it to be the safest and easiest in the context of the whole game. Strictly speaking you are absolutely correct on Raph's damage and only needing one (set of) grappling hook; this walkthrough is intended to teach what I believe and have found to be the easiest/safest way to beat the game to anyone who isn't super familiar with it, and after playing the game many times (too many, ha), this means avoiding Raph's short range and stocking up on scroll weapons in that one building with that route.

Ah I was just showing both options on that level (3) for picking up the scroll weapons. I don't get into it on the later stage in the Barn because I believe that's relatively more difficult and dangerous to get. Plus if you stock up early as I show, you have scroll weapons for the rest of Stage 3 and Stage 4 along with their bosses if you want to dip into them. And regarding not showing the scroll and pizza in the Technodrome, I recommend the route I show as it's pretty much the most direct and as such safest. The less time you can spend in the Technodrome, the better, as it's the most dangerous stage in my opinion. The whole walkthrough is set up to expressly show what I believe to be the most efficient but safest route through the game to those who are relatively new or inexperience with the game after running it many times.

I was born in 83. Grew up playing these games. Nobody calls it “the water level” Bud. It’s the Dam. Plain and simple ALWAYS has been called the Dam. Simply referring to it as the water level is super cringe and just objectively wrong
