Nah, Riker could have gotten them; he just knew that they'd be worth more with Quark for a favor, since as Nog said, "it's hard to keep secrets from a Ferrengi." I mean they've got ears, and their ears have ears. And Quark was the only Ferrengi bartender across two quadrants, hearing conversations from everyone. In DS9, Rom also showed that Ferrengi are able to isolate conversations from everyone across the Promenade, at great distances... of course it backfired when the Chief accidentially hit him with the ultrasonic probe.

Deep down, Quark is a nice guy. Two of my favorite scene's in the whole series are the "rootbeer" scene's. In one, Quark & Garak compare the Federation to the drink; "it's cloying". "It's Insidious". Later, a drunk Quark talks about how he hates the Dominion, & wants the Federation back; "I want to sell rootbeer again!" Also, Quark saves himself & Odo in "The Ascent". When he was broke, & forced to sell weapons, he ends up agast one guy wants to kill 28 million people, & schemes to destroy the deal. In doing so, he sets the antagonist to destroy each other! So time after time, we see Quark really is a good guy. He just wants to get rich, & deals with shady elements of the criminal world.

And in fact, he arguably provided additional service and convenience of not having to travel out to DS9, and to his bar, where he may well have been a paying customer 'While he's there'. Like with the klingons, he learned their ways and ate their food. To put it simply he tries to Think like who he's talking to instead of just thinking like a human. Like Sisko barely tolerates quark from what I've seen ( though that might be farengi as a whole minus one or two ) and I think the reason why Picard tolerates them is because he is legally required to do so. Where Sisko would interact with strongarm methods ( not as a first action of course, but he's got a lot to deal with ) and Picard would use workarounds like loopholes, Riker would play by Farengi rules and come out on top. If he isn't already I'd wager he'd be an honorary member of every non-human they come across.

@@jasonhenry8067 Exactly. But if it was someone else, he would have divulged most of the information, withholding some crucial piece of information to get a little bit more out of the deal. But Will Riker is an idealist who only has what he has and offers it to achieve an ideal. If Quark were working with Thomas Riker, there would have been a few more steps in the "getting the info" process. Thomas would have offered half of the credit back, and then Quark would have withheld a bit, and then Thomas would have relinquished the rest of it. Same exact terms for the final transaction, but different routes. Quark is one of my favorite characters in the whole thing. While he's lacking in ethics, it's in line with his culture. If he were a human and he acted the way he acts, he'd be an unfair person. But as a Ferengi, he just transacts as expected. If anything, he's softer than most Ferengi. It tends to be lost on us because of Rom and Nog who are even more hoo-mon-ish in their values. But if you look at every Ferengi character in the STU, side-by-side--excluding that worm hole scientist (or were there two?)--on the whole he's kind of a good guy. Which is why he's one of my favorite characters. While he is mostly entrenched in his society's culture and values, he can sometimes see values other than latinum. He's a day-walker. He understands and even empathizes with Federation values, while mostly walking the walk of Ferengi culture. If Ferenginar ever joined the federation, he'd be one hell of an ambassador. Given the proper compensation, of course.

Fun fact. Riker was the first person to meet and talk to the Ferengi in "The Last Outpost" (S01; E05). Armin Shimerman also played the Ferengi who spoke. The Ferengi were supposed to be TNG's villains, but it became evident they were more comic relief. So the writers eventually settled on the Borg.

I've always assumed Latinum must be some funky metal that can't be replicated, hence it still has some value in an age when you can get any material you want out of thin air at presumably little to no cost in energy.
@FLAME45643 ай бұрын
actualy Latinum to me is a kind of Sci fi metal thats known to be rare in the Star Trek universe which to many trek cultures like the Ferengi they often have used as currency on their homeworld of Ferenginar and their commercial trade industry known as the f.c.a and many other things. If im alo no mistaken Latninus is over the years that Star Trek has existed has become one of the most well valued and well known sci fi star trek currencies in trek history even in games like Star Trek Online itself.

Man, he played this character so well. I remember some famous actor/actress saying they wanted to become an actor when they as kids, saw their mom in a play and didnt recognize her for half the play. Its so ridiculous how we praise De Niro (the most overrated actor on the planet) or Pacino who play EXACTLY the same person in every movie(which doesnt mean the movie is bad) ,the mannerism,minute traits,gait etc... While actors like this never get such wide recognition. Luckily there are still some good actors in Hollywood like Oldman or Meryl Streep.

Evi1M4chine I kind of get where you're coming from, but a hierarchy like this one is simply very well suited to that sort of organization. And it it there really aren't too many options besides stay put, move up, or get out. And many real-life organizations that use this kind of hierarchy don't even like the "stay put" option and rarely let people use it. All that said, I'd say Riker was absolutely qualified for the captain's chair; he was just waiting for a very particular one… And, although he might not really like it, Picard would have likely done well in the admiralty. His diplomatic skills, people skills, eloquence, and command presence were all better suited to captaincy, but could easily work as an admiral.

@Evi1M4chine Actually when they wanted to promote him, it was into a position he is being trained for, Captain. That and he was hoping that Picard would get promoted up, and he would get promoted to Captain and get the Enterprise.

I've never seen this episode, or the DS9 one with Lursa and Betor (?) for that matter. Not surprising, considering they were initially portrayed as comically villainous. Honestly, all they were missing was a waxed moustache that they could twirl while reciting the Rules of Acquisition. So did Riker hit his jackpot offscreen during “Emissary” or “Birthright?” I suspect the latter; the Promenade was pretty grim during the former, I don’t see many Enterprise officers going there just to hang out. Also, he apparently charmed the pants off Kira, and given how unhappy she was about Starfleet taking over the station before Sisko discovered the Wormhole, I doubt she would have been receptive.
