Environment-wise, while Plutonia is more rounded-out and challenging, TNT is more about experimentation & creativity, with vast labyrinthine maps & traps. Yes they could be draggingly tedious, but at same time it adds an explorative element refreshing from the chaotic bustle of mass-slaughtering demons, essential first-person gaming. Plus the original midis are some of the most amazing DooM music even by today's standards. Thanks A Lot Decino for playing through this series, just as quintessential to Final DooM as Plutonia is.

When I played that map as a kid I was really confused: I was certain that I had explored everything, but still the level end stats were far from being 100%. That was in the 90's and my access to any sort of resources like walkthroughs was severely limited, and so it was mind blowing to finally, by accident, discover the "parallell world". I think that is the intented effect, and for me, it worked wonderfully.

I love this map 1. As always starts as a horseshoe reference to e1m1 but then it gets really weird. The trigger on the blue door makes you not really step on it cause you don't have the blue key, then you have a lit switch that you turn off, a chaingunner trap and the classic exit switch that lowers into a trap. Coming from the vanilla wads this intro puts things into perspective very fast.

Trying this too alongside Plutonia. (in crispy doom because I'm even more of a retro nerd) Wormhole was a hell of a ride, took me five tries or so. Having a limited ammo shotgun made the begining a bit of a change of survival or not. The revenant in the middle of the bridge was an asshole, sometimes didn't fell like fighting or getting stuck randomly, not to mention fast revenant missiles (am already bad at doging the normal ones) On one of my first tries I decided for whatever reason to catch some ammo in the secret of the normal dimension before going to the alternative one, terrible desicion, got even lower and unprepared to the next section, had ended up following decinos path. Human barbicue was kind of hard to pull, but mostly because of silly mistakes that decino at this point might not understand in his almighty completing SWTW and Sunlust pistol start no saves. The rest was a breeze, just died once in map01 because I couldn't punch a stupid imp after 4 tries

Hot take: I like TNT Evilution. Not a perfect wad of course, as the cavern maps are kinda boring indeed, also, I prefer many custom wads over it - stuff like Alien Vendetta is obviously much better. But it's also released later, so... I still don't like the negativity around TNT. I think, the good maps (like Stronghold or Nukage Processing) are better than the maps in Doom II. In fact, I would say Doom II is probably the weakest official wad if you don't count Master Levels (which I also like, but to a lesser extent). Also, map 20 is the most underrated map in this WAD I think. Yeah, it's very long but it's REALLY epic. You're probably not a fan since you like fast-paced maps, but I really like that one, a lot of experimental / creative / abstract rooms, ideas and custom textures. Overall, I replay TNT maps from time to time and it's always a good time. Metal (map08) though is a complete garbage. :D Even I can't defend that. Big wide-open areas with hit-scan is the worst kind of design.
