Try "Dirty Movies", "Take Your Whiskey Home" and perhaps "Big Bad Bill" to hear Eddie and Alex jam with their dad on clarinet for something lighthearted. Man, it's old-school VH... they're all good!

This was the first song on their first album. There had been nothing like it before this, it was like time stopped and your mind was instantly blown as soon as that car horn blew and that heavy bass kicked in.

It was a game changer when it was released. Your right, hearing that reverse horn at the beginning with the bass thudding meant crank up the radio.

100% correct. On the timeline of rock music history there is before and after Van Halen’s debut album. Truthfully there have been several groups with their own little spots in history, but Van Halen was just that much different in their beginning.

When this album came out, on this first song, it was like a UFO had landed for everyone to see and we knew rock would never be the same. On the next song, the door opened and their leader descended the stairs playing a solo like nothing we have heard before or since. The game didn't change, but a whole new game was invented and the champs were crowned at the same time. They showed up and simply stole everybodys candy. I have heard rumors that at their Texas Jam debut, none of the other legendary bands even knew who they were and when VH walked by them as they were taking the stage, DLR supposedly told a few of them that they were going to wish that they hadnt went on after VH, to which the legends responded with a middle finger and FU. After their first song and with the crowd going insane bonkers, Ted Nugent looked at everybody backstage and asked, "what the hell are we all going to do now?" Van Halen with DLR is the scale that all others are measured against.

I remember going into a radio shack and a guy came in with a Van Halen album and was looking to buy a stereo. The salesman took the album and put it in his top stereo and cranked it full blast playing running with the Devil! The guy bought the stereo tight there!

I bought this album back when it was released in 1978. It blew my mind. The late great Eddie Van Halen. There will never be another. Master musician, writer, Inventor, classically trained. He took it where Hendrix left off and just blew the lid off of Rock and Roll. David Lee Roth with his energy and antics on the stage. Great front man. Michael Anthony with those bass runs and those backing vocals, excellent. Alex Van Halen one of the most underrated drummers of all time. Not in my book. I saw them in concert several times and they blew me away everytime. Great shows, Good times that will never be forgotten. Long live the mighty VAN HALEN.

Van Halen introduced the world to new, groovy hardER rock in 1978. Eddie was an innovator who made his own guitar for this album/tour, and tweaked his amp differently than others before him too, all of which is how he achieved this signature sound (along with good studio production, of course). As others have rightfully commented here, this album was a game-changer in 1978 (and thankfully so). I mean, other respectable giants were carrying the torch of hard rock through the 70s (Sabbath, Foreigner, Judas Priest), but these guys took it to the next level. Those harmonizing vocals didn't hurt either, and Diamond Dave was the frontman's Frontman from the word Go. This song, Unchained, Panama, and Outta Space (from the last album, you NEED to check that song out if you haven't yet).

When Van Halen hit the Radio in 1977, I thought 💭 Oh my god… This band is crucial to the success of the rest of the world of music. They were MASSIVE and proved to teach millions of singers, guitarists, drummers and bassists around the world 👏👏👏

Incredible to think that this was there first album and Eddie was in his very early 20's, this entire album is classic with some of the best guitar riffs ever and just the beginning of the now famous BROWN SOUND. Great to see other people of color digging VH, I love it. You guys have to review Ain't Talkin Bout Love also off the same album the intro riff was a came changer. I heard that this song has a gospel influence in a church hymn but was adapted. Still the original lyrics from the hymn were somehow close to running out with devil, like expelling him from someone’s life. There is a lot of gospel influence in rock’n’roll. Love Van Halen, my favorite band for more than 40 years. You should listen to Light Up The Sky, the best of the underrated Van Halen songs, from their second album. All the best from Lisbon, Portugal!

Check out “I’m The One” from their first album. It has all of the elements that made up their sound but the two that really stand out are the vocals, especially the a cappella part near the end, and Eddie’s blazing guitar work. Their sense of humor comes through too.

Track #1 off the first Van Halen album in 1978... this was the era of disco music and everybody was "shakin' it" 🤣 The big secret in the band was that Michael Anthony (bass) did a lot of the high screams on the Van Halen records (Not singer David Lee Roth)... Michael Anthony admitted in interviews that whenever Dave was reaching beyond his vocal ability, it was up to him to cover for the singer! It became more obvious by 1984, when Van Halen were on massive tours and David Lee Roth was struggling to sing... Michael Anthony did quite a bit of singing live while Dave was jumping around on stage... Eddie Van Halen (guitar) also did a bit of backing vocals, but he didn't quite have the voice; he had a deeper, R&B-style bluesy voice and u can hear him sing lead on a later song "How many say I"... There are clips of Michael Anthony singing live recently, and he's a decent lead vocalist.

Since you like David Lee Roth (I saw your reaction to 'Jump') you have to check out 'Just a Gigalo'. So fun & pure crazy David. Van Halen is awesome. Lead David has been replaced with Sammy Hagar & then he was replaced with another guy & now I think David might be back again. Eddie Van Halen & the musicians are amazing & David made the band better & more fun to hear & see.

Unfortunately Ed passed away a few years ago but they did reunite with Dave twice. The first time was for 2 songs on a greatest hits CD.'Me Wise Magic' is a banger & 'Can't Get This Stuff No More' is a little more mellow but still very cool. The 2nd reunion lasted about 10 years. They toured for 5 years, released a CD called A Different Kind of Truth, then toured for 4 or 5 more years.'You & Your Blues' & 'Outta Space' are a couple of standouts from that CD.

Let me tell you a story. There was a young man in Evansville, Indiana named Jim Gilles. Born in the late '60's he was introduced to rock'n'roll music at a very young age. By his high school years he was in and out of trouble due to his addiction to drugs, alcohol and rock'n'roll. Some of his friends were born again believers in Jesus Christ and were witnessing to Jim urging him to be born again. Then one night in September 1980, Jim attended a Van Halen concert. He was standing 5 feet away from the lead guitarist, studying the band and the reaction from the audience. As Jim was watching David Lee Roth prancing back and forth on the stage making obscene gestures, suddenly Roth stepped forward and shouted to the audience "NOT EVEN GOD CAN SAVE YOUR SOUL AT A VAN HALEN CONCERT!", to which the audience erupted with cheers and desiring more of Roth's blasphemy as they began to play their hit song "Running With The Devil". Jim was shocked and appalled by both Roth and the audience that he cried out to God to deliver him. Immediately Jim Gilles was saved, delivered and born again at a Van Halen concert and is now a street preacher, filled with the Holy Spirit and a desire to see the lost come to faith in Christ.
