The good thing is that Sodom remains mostly consistent for 3 decades. I'm very pleased with their 'Genesis XIX" Album from 2019 .. Been their fan for at least 20 years.

R.I.P. to original Sodom drummer Chris Witchhunter (aka Christian Dudek) ... his drumming skills made the band's career from the early 80's til 1992. Unfortunately, his alcohol addiction got him fired and cost him his life by 2008. Tom Angelripper (bass & vocals) and Witchhunter (drums) were the core of Sodom for a decade; they went thru a string of guitar players from the EP 'In the sign of evil' to 'Tapping the vein' in 1992 ... Grave Violator (aka Josef Dominic), Destructor (aka Michael Wulf), Frank Blackfire (aka Frank Gosdzik), Michael Hoffman, Andy Brings... When Sodom started in the early 80's, they were big fans of early black metal by Venom, Hellhammer... W. Germany was a hotbed for new metal bands and a number of them - Kreator, Destruction, Running Wild, Attack, Tankard, Holy Moses, Helloween ... debuted w/ Sodom. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough money to fund these bands and indie labels like Noise Records or SPV/Steamhammer in Germany had to get by w/ poor production jobs. Despite never breaking up, Angelripper went thru a string of guitarists and drummers for 3 decades - a stable line-up for Sodom came between 1997 til 2010 w/ Bernemann on guitar ( aka Bernd Kost) and Bobby on drums (aka Bobby Schottkowski) ...Bernemann lasted until 2018 w/ Makka on drums (aka Markus Freiwald) ... Sodom apparently does not tour extensively worldwide the way German thrash counterparts Kreator and Destruction do, because Angelripper has a job in Germany. Sodom was very raw in the early recordings, the EP and 'Obsessed by cruelty' album... but guitarist Frank Blackfire brought some focus in their music and delivered the 1987 album 'Persecution mania'... ('Nuclear winter' was on it) and the live album 'Mortal way of live' in 1988. With German thrash metal selling well by then, Sodom's 1989 album 'Agent Orange' ('Baptism of fire' included) was their first record to chart top 40 in W. Germany. Frank Blackfire left to join Kreator in 1990... guitarist Michael Hoffman came in for the 1990 album 'Better off dead' (which had 'The Saw is the law') was an attempt to appeal commercially for sure. Angelripper was not happy w/ that record and it failed to sell up to expectations. Hoffman quit right after... Andy Brings joined on guitar and 'Tapping the vein' in 1992 was Sodom's most abrasive, speed-heavy album. Chris Witchhunter was fired and Atomic Steif (aka Guido Richter) joined on drums til 1996... Sodom went in a punk/speedcore direction. (Late) Guitarist Strahli (aka Dirk Strahlmeier) did only 1 album in 1995 - 'Masquerade in blood'. In 1997, Angelripper fired Strahli and Atomic Steif, and brought Sodom back to their thrash metal sound w/ Bernemann (guitar) & Bobby (drums) in 1997 on the next 3 records - "Til death do us unite" (1997), 'Code red' (1999) and 'M13' (2001) ...a self-titled Sodom album came in 2006. 'Genesis XIX' is the latest Sodom album in 2020... Angelripper made the band a 4-piece for the 1st time w/ Frank Blackfire returning on guitar, Toni Merkel (drums) and Yorck Segatz (guitar) Strangely, German thrashers Destruction also upgraded to a 4-piece band recently, despite the exit of founding guitarist Mike Sifringer... w/ founding bassist/vocalist Schmier (aka Marcel Schirmir), drummer Randy Black, Damir Eskic and Martin Furia on guitars.

The other interesting thing about Sodom is that they are from a small town near Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany near the border with The Netherlands. The German thrash band Kreator are also from Essen and they were in the same scene with Sodom at that time. I love German thrash from that period, Sodom and Destruction being my favorites. At that time we got a lot of our underground metal news from both fanzines in the US and from British magazines such as Metal Forces and Kerrang!. We had to find a record store which would carry Metal Forces, that was the best one. One of the big writers about this underground thrash/crossover/hardcore movement at that time was an American writer named Don Kaye. A lot of his articles appeared in both publications in the UK. I recall that he wrote a tour diary article in which he accompanied American thrash/crossover band DRI from San Francisco to Europe for a European tour for their album "Crossover". The US and NATO had a lot of bases around Germany at that time due to the Cold War, Kaye wrote in his article about the DRI shows in Germany, how a lot of US Servicemen were in the pit at a lot of the various German shows. It was a fun read. I also recall his big article when he traveled to Brazil to explore the soon-to-explode metal scene down there.

Hell yeah been a massive Sodom fan since I first heard Ausgebombt back in 1989. I have to agree, The Saw is the Law isn't a great track by any means. I feel it's like having a slow dance in the middle of a mosh pit. Interesting you should mention Kreator, Frank Blackfire (Sodom's Guitarist) joined Sodom in 1987 and left two years later just after the release of Agent Orange, eventually he was the second ex-member of Sodom to join Kreator.

I was going to interview Sodom during their first US tour in the late 80s. However, something happened with their work/tour visas. They didn't end-up coming to the States for quite a while. Regarding sound quality of albums at that time, most of these bands were on small independent labels which didn't have a large budget. A big thing at that time was all of this talk about production, "the next album we'll have a better production". Meanwhile, on the punk/hardcore side of things, bands didn't worry about that so much. It was an interesting contrast. Knowing about the various underground metal indie labels is pretty interesting in itself. In Europe you had Music For Nations, SPV/Steamhammer, Noise, Neat and a few others. Most had distribution deals with American indie labels such as Megaforce, Combat, Metal Blade, etc. Metallica were first signed to Megaforce Records, major label Elektra bought-out their contract with Megaforce. Slayer was on Metal Blade Records until Rick Rubin signed them to his Def American label in 1986. It's all very interesting.

Sodom was Extreme Metal, nothing to compare to these midiatic bands you cited. Influeced all extreme metal, mainly the Black Metal worlwide in their early years (1981-1985). Sodom was one of the mainly bands that made part of 1st Wave of Black Metal, alongside Venom, Celtic Frost/Hellhammer, Bathory, Sarcofago.

React to some of Bathory's first self entitled. You can hear the mix between thrash and black very well. It is a well known stample of the early Black Metal sound. Mystifier is a band from Brazil made by a couple of brothers which has also a very distinct sound to it, you can clearly see how the blast beats got used after in the early ninetees, the Goetia album is still a masterpiece. PS you are amazing, loves your views on the music. I'm down with everything you say

You are right, better off dead is not as good as agent orange or everything they did before. If you are interested in that "better" Sodom just have a look at tapping the vein, I see it as the best Sodom album after agent. Its very brutal, nothing to complain. And the newest record is also ok, they have a drummer now who is into black metal a lot and you can hear blast beats on that one. Its the former drummer of Pestlegion. Did you ever take a look at Belphegor? Bondage goat zombie. :-)
