@StonoBandito It was just a joke. But yes, it's true that many leftists did support Lincoln and still do. Which is a shame, because Lincoln didn't care about slavery. And yes there where some socialist atrocities, but that's nothing compared to the ones of capitalism.

The north out produced the south hands down, similar to WWII with Germany and Japan, but as far as defeating the natural infantry, not a chance the south was far superior. However I'll give credit where do, the Indiana regiments and some of the Kansas and other upper Midwestern regiments had good infantry! But I can tell you from experience, and I'm from Louisiana originally, in Afghanistan I've seen the statement I wrote above is true. The southerners like myself gave the enemy hell, too bad the weak politicians threw in the towel yet again!

Coming from a southern American who actually has a union veteran as a direct ancestor... It's good to know that there are others in the world who see both sides for what they truly were...heroes in their own right! Both fought for a glorious cause....and both hold a special place in the heart of all Americans!

+Kyle Owen . very true and I fully agree mate. I suppose I just feel for the defeated sides in battles and don't believe too much what the victors of any war say. Funny how i came upon this page. I read a book titled "Australian Confederates". A story of the Confederate raider Shenandoah and its visit to Melbourne, Australia. where it recruited a few Aussies for its crew. When I searched Shenandoah I got Tennessee Ernie Ford and his beautiful rendition of the song. Now I I'm a fan of his music. Have you done any research on your Union ancestor and what his role was during the war?

Yes I have, actually, he was my Great-Great-Great Grandfather Anthony Lyall, whose parents were English immigrants. He joined the 134th New York Infantry regiment in 1862 when he was 19 years old. He fought in the Battle of Gettysburg, was shot in the leg on the first day of the battle July 1st, and did not have to have it amputated. He was honorably discharged in 1863.

No it isn't ironic, the Confederacy left the Union for the same reason the Union left the United Kingdom.. they felt their rights were being taken away (I believe they were wrong about one of them in particular) and they did something about it. They were not traitors, they were true to the spirit of America, if you don't like your government, get rid of it. The power the federal government has today would be unimaginable to people that lived back then

Biggest fraud portrayed by the northern historians. Remember the 1st Southern president was theoretically Truman, but realistically it was LBJ. My father was a WWII veteran, and he told me from his mouth how the south was screwed over and over until post WWII. He didn't ride in a automobile until he was in the Navy in 1941, Lincoln was a carpet bagger, he declared no writ of habeus corpus to rid himself of his political enemies, look at the Senator from Maryland when part of Maryland seceded... He jailed him and a Supreme Court Justice (Tanney) without habeus corpus, that would never pass muster today complete disregard for the 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th amendments! This is why many southerners turned who were neutral, hence Texas and Louisiana finally seceding.
