To Blanket or Not To Blanket Your Horse Over the Winter

How don't now how this video popped up in my suggestions. A question I never thought of asking. However, since the question has been presented I'd say it is up to the horse.

We don't clip are horses so nothing gets blanketed, we had 8' of snow last year and we had weeks of -40 and the horses are fine as long as they have some wind break and plenty of hay to eat. You did a good job of walking in the middle horse KZbinrs always get a lot of comments from know it alls that don't even have horses, so great job on the video.

My 22 year old gelding has never worn a blanket. He was recently diagnosed with Cushings Disease and is now on medication for it. But because of the Cushings he can no longer tolerate cold. My vet has me blanket him now if it goes below 40 degrees.

That is a very reasonable way to blanket horses. Unlike some goof owners who leave their blankets on horses when it's not even cold.

i’ve seen a video of a “meet my horses” and her horse had 2 heavy blankets on then a rain sheet on top of that. She said the temperature was 36 degrees. like whatttt

I've only had a few horses and I never blanket them ever. They are outside 100% of the time we didn't have a barn before I moved. Are you supposed to blanket them in the winter? When the weather is to bad/cold I have a barn now that they will go in

I think it depends. Everyone has their own feelings on blankets. Myself, I choose to blanket my horses when it is really wet and cold, or if there is a blizzard in our forecast. One of my horses is older, and he has a difficult time staying warm, especially in bad weather. But honestly, everyone has different thoughts on blanketing. I feel horse owners need to do what makes them feel the best.
