Hello, Your videos are always very informative. I'm 64yrs young and grew up on a farm with 6 horses and 12 ponies and have always had a horse even to this day. However, I've never put a blanket or sheet on a horse. If it's a cold and rainy day or a very cold night we put them in the barn much to our horse's dislike. We do it more for us than them because our horses prefer to be outside, lol.

also i've only been following you for some weeks, but I guess you're kind of becoming a role model for me, not only for horse riding but for your determined-but-calm attitude towards life in general

I'm in Canada and I blanket my horse. I let him grow a winter coat until about December and blanket when the temperature falls below -10 C consistently. He is on pasture all day with no shelter and stalled at night, however his stall is a unique design and is an outside stall with three solid walls and a half wall similar to racing stables. I watch the weather like a hawk and ensure he's dressed appropriately. Turnouts that fit my 24 year old foundation QH are Amigo Hero rainsheets, Pessoa Alpine and Weatherbeeta Freestyle winters. Also, I clean and proof my blankets frequently.

I blanket based on location. I live in Eastern NC where winters are mild. His coat is thicker this year, so I only blanket if temps drop below 30. He does have a run in shed where he huddles with his buddy. So, due to location , I use a medium blanket. I’ll use a sheet if it’s cold and windy 30-40. I prefer a Rambo for durability and fit. Northwind is also a tough blanket(resists tears, durable).

I love your videos! You’re such a prepared and clear teacher and you must be a very pleasant person. I’m just a beginner but I find them very helpful and interesting. I was wondering, maybe you could do some videos about teaching people as well? I’m lucky to have a great instructor now but I remember years ago I had one who was not so good and brought me to giving up horse riding completely for a long time. So maybe some tips on how to treat students would be beneficial to the less prepared teachers

Perfect timing, I'm just buying my first horse and I'm considering whether I should blanket or not.

It depends on where you live. Does it get cold in your winter?

That's what I did. I observed him. I use a cooler if he is damp. A turnout sheet for drizzle & a medium weight blanket for snow. If the temp is above 15° & it isn't snowing or raining. He will tear off a cooler or turnout sheet. So he gets cold at about 10°. I Also have a heavy weight blanket that is used when the temp drops under 10 below. At 10° his troff freezes very fast. I have a heated 25 gallon heated bucket for him. He hates being wet unless it is from a bath. So before it rains or snows he at least needs a turnout sheet on. If the rain or snow is heavy the turnout sheet will get wet. So I use a blanket instead. Once the temp rises above 10° I take it back off. That's is if the snow has stopped.

My horse is boarded outside of Los Angeles. She has a full clip since she is ridden every day and in the warmer weather her incredibly furry coat becomes a problem. We go by temperature guides here in milder weather - if your horse is clipped and lives in a pipe stall, she is blanketed if it goes below 60 degrees. She truly becomes a "horse of a different color" when clipped - she is naturally black, but when clipped she's a bay!

Very informative video! Thank you! I have a rodeo horse rescue. His previous owner had him under veterinary care because he was so underweight. Recently, I noticed that was he was shivering and I needed to blanket him. It appears that he needs another layer of fat on him.

I struggle blanketing my horse..shes a houdini and destroys them 😒..very informative..her hair gets thick and shes a hairy beast..im in New Zealand and our winters are damp and cold..no snow tho..but thanks!
@yanapetiet45816 жыл бұрын
mayby she doesnt like the blacked because she is already warm, and thats why she does the houdini thing :P you say she is a hairy beast, so mayby it isnt as necessary as you may think.

Feel a horses ears to get a idea of how warm or cold they are a blanket flattens the hairctaking out that layer of air that is keeping him warm when it rains horses have a natural drip line on their flank and this lead the rain away from their belly if you brush or desturb their coat you can mess up that natural drip line

where i work they never put blankets on horses. in the stable it is about the outside temperature, so the develop that winter-coat. they do not shave the horses so they can keep themselves warm.

I repair blankets. The blanlets I repair the most are WeatherBeetas. The bindings are not secure, not tight. Thread tension is very poor at best, loose thread tension on machines at their factory causes this which in turn causes other parts to get stressed. They also rip at the seams. Horse rubs against something and the outer shell tears. Thexshell seems to not be real high quality. On the other hand, I DO like their design. I just wish they would use better materials.

When I used to take care of 2 horses. Male and female. The male was old and was in his last years. The owners I used to take care of them for always wanted them to have jackets in in winter. And thi is in south Mississippi so it really don't get that cold much. But one day the old horse got his leg caught in a strap from the jacket and end up not being able to get up and he died. Like I said he was really old. But I ink the jacket is what causes him to be able to get up. And I would tell them the jackets was useless becosue it didn't get that cold anyways. And they was in a barn at night every night. But they insisted on keeping them jacketed.

Sometimes after a hard ride the horse will want to roll. They like to fluff the hair., . A roll in the snow and a brush then a light tarp to keep the wind off over night. . I like the look of a fluffy horse in the cold weather.

There is a lot of pressure in my barn to clip my horse. I'm not sure how to handle that. I grew up with unclipped horses. Is it absolutely necessary if you ride in winter? Surely water sponging off the sweat, a good towel dry and a cooler after exercise should be enough? I'm worried about the responsibility of always having to have the right rug.

My horse is 30 years old, and thin. He lives outside 24/7. The farm in is northern Michigan and the snow and rain and sleet not to mention winds that can be 35MPH at times. They do have lean tools, but it is brutally cold. I think if your horse is young and with good weight ...maybe. But there are circumstances

I would blanket my cutting horses (cow cutting) so when you work up a big sweat they dry off faster because of the shorter hair.

Please I’m so fed up with nonsense. The way horses survive in Winter is yes they get good long coats, when they are young and healthy. And even then horses are highly social animals and they live in bands, including bachelor bands. When it is an especially cold environment they have each other’s body heat because they huddle together. As nature is not necessarily kind, the old and the very young and any weak animals end up on the outside of huddle which of course ends up depriving them of some of body heat and some naturally parish. It’s a cycle of life. Please, please stop with this nonsense. Thank you
