In 1974, Robert Asp started work on a viking ship replica in the basement of a potato warehouse in Hawley, Minnesota... In 1982, that ship; the Hjemkomst, sailed from New York to Oslo. I knew Robert Asp, and I was able to explore that ship while it was being built when I was young. The Hjemkomst is now permanently housed in it's own museum (The Hjemkomst Center) in Moorhead Minnesota.... You should check it out! Sköl!

Cool to hear you speak Norwegian, as well as pointing out that some expressions can be a bit tricky to translate from English to Norwegian (or vice versa). "Wishing you all the best" is probably closest to "Ønsker deg alt godt" (literal meaning "wishing you all that is good"). Thank you for giving me this opportunity to reflect on that phrase.

My norwegian prof at university came from Tømsberg so I'm pretty happy to see you went there, for it is a very important city (I mean, it's the oldest) in the country. It seems to be so beautiful, and I love the fact that they really embraced the "viking heritage" and went building langskip. One summer I'll go see my teacher there and visit the city. I'm pretty happy to be able to understand everything that is said, I still struggle with western accents (though I really had no problem in Stavanger, strangely enough), but well, I learnt Tønsberg/Oslo dialect and accent so...

I didn't know that you were in Tønsberg, Dr Crawford! I hope you have a great time! I've been a lot at the vikingship yard. I really love the place and sailing with the ships! Jan Knutsen is an amazingly skilled builder of replicas of viking age artefacts, particularly ships and boats, but they have made an amazing copy of the ceremonial wagon from the Oseberg mound as well! Bygginga av "Saga Oseberg" var i stor grad en dugnadsinnsats. Selv om det var svært gode trebåtbyggere, som Jan og andre, arkeologer fra Oslo og Roskilde og andre, som styrte byggeprosessen. We travelled with the ship to Roskilde Vikingeskipsmuseum, in 2015 to get the final round of adjustment of the ballast and sailing properties done, as the Danes had been doing this kind of craftsmanship for many years ! But, the Norwegian "knarresmedar" have been thought to build wooden clinker built ships, both from the West and Northern Norwegian tradition, going back to the early medieval times and the study of old wrecks and tools found in excavations in Norway, The British Isles and Ireland. I find it amazing that the tradition for the use of square sails on smaller ships actually survived both the Latino rigging and the steam and diesel engines! Håper du har hatt mange nye og interessante opplevelser på denne turen innom Norden!

Hello professor Crawford, I have a couple questions: 1. Are the syllabic consonants of English in any way related to those found in earlier languages or are they a new phenomenon? 2. How sure are we (in comparison to the rest of the reconstruction) that sillabic consonants in PIE stemmed from the loss of laryngeals and how impossible would it be for sillabyc ū and ī to chronologically coexist with the laryngeal series? Because if h2 was a pharyngeal, we'd have a spookily similar setup as Semitic languages - ū and ī as allophones of w and j, and ā as allophone of ʕ

It’s not hard. If you know one, you know them all, as our languages are related. As a Norwegian I’m fluent in Norwegian, and English (2nd language taught in school), and fluent by default in Swedish, and Danish without never having to actually learn it. Used to be fluent in German at one point, but forgot as I never used it. I struggle with Danish due to the horrible sound, but of courde their grotten form is way easier as we adopted it due to X 100 years of Danish rule, previously we also had Swedish rule. And Norwegians are closer to Swedes than Danes. Closer ties, culturally, historically, linguistically, and socially, as most Norwegians has Swedish relates. The rest is exposure, as we watch early on ask kids, Swedish and Danish kid TV shows/programs. Of course there’s also the music industry.

Your accent would be less noticeable like like that of an immigrant if your -r wasn’t so hard. Norwegian is all about where we stress, and the tone. Going up or down in the beginning or the end and vice versa is what differentiates the various dialects besides pronunciation and the words used. On the west coast they go down at the end of words, here in the East, we go up regardless of mood. Soften your endings and don’t roll the -r so much, and you’ll sound way better😝👍🏾 It’s not silent either, but much softer. Actually not even just -r, but at any ending it’s basically almost silent/soft. Never hard. And ironically on some words you had a much more Icelandic pronunciation of the -r😝😅😁
