Safe but fun idea: every New Year’s Eve , my dad hires a karaoke DJ guy and invites every family member and friend he knows over to his house. House is turned into an instant family friendly nightclub. Hearing everyone singing at the top of their lungs into a mic on a “stage” is hilarious and incredibly entertaining. Everyone dresses up like a celebrity. They have tables of snacks and drinks. Live your rockstar dreams 🤣

@@annettevernon8295 Just what I thought: dancing and singing! And maybe some kind of fashion show. Build a catwalk, put on your dresses, beachwear or halloween costumes, walk like a model (or like an Egyptian!) to music from the 80s and have someone commenting your outfits. Or do a cabaret show! So much fun!

I have a 10 year old granddaughter with ADHD who had a perpetually messy room. While visiting her and her family this summer I taught her how to organize her room just enough for it to work for her without being overwhelmed by trying to make it perfect, how to do 5 minute pickups,etc. Months later she's still doing 5 minute pickups, sending me before and after photos, and learning that making her room better is good enough. She and her family just visited me for Christmas and they all definitely noticed how much progress I've made since their last visit a year ago (they live in Europe and I'm in the US). I cleaned out my "junk drawer" a few months ago and finally threw away every pen that didn't write right away and every pencil stub or pencil without an eraser. I bought drawer organizers and made it functional and attractive. My granddaughter now refers to that drawer as "Oma's super-organized drawer." From now on I'm going to use that term rather than "junk drawer." Thank you and Dawn and Dana for helping me, slowly, in area after area, finally get my house decluttered and organized.

This is so important for my son when he was a child. It overwhelmed him. When I said pick up your room. He didn’t understand how he could possibly clean up everything that was so messy when I talk to the doctor he said try to teach him to do one thing at a time pick up all your shoes and put them in the closet pick up all your socks and put them in the hamper. Pick up all your pants and put them in the hamper. One thing at a time they can only focusfor very little time and this helps them as a 32 year-old now he is the same way and he loves or organization. He just didn’t know how to achieve it at that age.

When we built our house, I asked our builder about a cavity close to a duct (we built through a small builder with a house plan we had drawn up by a draftsman). The cavity was free of any additional ducting and was going to be covered over by drywall. I asked him to turn it into a narrow closet instead. It’s now our broom closet with a plug in outlet for our vacuums. Seriously, go through your house plan and see if there are empty cavities that you can turn into a broom closet instead. It’s well worth the money.

Instead of Vegas this year: have you heard of indoor skydiving? There is no jumping from an airplane. It is just a vertical wind tunnel. You start off standing on the ground, and the rushing wind simulates the skydiving experience. It actually levitates you into the air. A family member did it for his birthday one year, and he loved it. There are videos to watch on KZbin to see if it will fit your "wild but safe" criteria.

They give you a room full of stuff (mostly broken computers or worthless ceramic dishes or things like that), a baseball bat, a helmet, and a pair of goggles, and they let you go to town destroying those things with said baseball bats (or just throw it against the wall). Seems like a good way to work out your frustration. And the best part is you don't have to clean up afterward 😂

I recently saw someone who took like old dishes and used a marker to write things they wanted to leave in the old year on it and then smashed them.

@@Trixiegrrr I could do that, plenty of old dishes in my eBay room that aren’t selling! 🤣 At my old church we had a burning bowl ceremony on NYE, similar concept, write down what you’re letting go of this year, in preparation for the new year.

My absolutely favorite way to spend New Year's Eve is family game night. Snacks, sodas, games, and staying up late. Sadly, now that we're all grown my siblings have their own family traditions, so my husband and I just spend the night quietly.
@MichelleNolan-zb2ch18 күн бұрын
Play games with your husband. My parents in their 70s start every morning having breakfast and playing 2 person games. Then they do separate things during the day but they always start each day that way. We play a game after dinner every night. My 20 something sons demand it after every meal. Used to be called Forced Family Fun but now my husband and I are the forced ones! 😂
@KristinaHoneyHavenFarm17 күн бұрын
@@MichelleNolan-zb2ch Sadly, my husband is not a game-player. He'll participate in large group games with my family, but otherwise, no. I have family members who used to play Scrabble every morning when they first got up, so I know what you are talking about. I rely on online to do games, but ironically I do not like the massive multiplayer games. Nor do I like to wait during turn-based games. However, I have found a few games I like that I can play by myself, so I just do those. My latest discovery has been Spanish crosswords, which have been very rewarding. The game itself hooks directly to a webpage for searching, which is a cool feature.

Cas, I love You, Dawn and Dana. You three have been instrumental in changing the way I see clutter and my habit of keeping everything, if its broken I save it to fix it. I hear Dawn "Give Me permission to throw it away!" I also now fold my laundry right out of the dryer and put it on top of the washer and then carry the entire load and put it away. What a game changer! We have lots of family in out home; 14 in total. On occasion when I do have to vacate the dryer in a hurry I put it in my tall hamper and take it to my bed so I know it will be folded and put away before bed. I usually stand there and fold and put away immediately but the put it on the bed is key. You just reminded us of the Take Your House Back course and I need to renew that this weekend, I hope the renewal is still $10.00. I will do the research and do what it takes. I haven't done a whole day declutter yet but love going through all the videos!!! You ladies are so inspirational and give us the tough love and strategies we need to get the house back in order. Me and my family are so grateful for your influence in my life, THANK YOU ALL!!!

I have a perfect space under my stairs to the basement to store my tool bag, the vacuum accessories & the box I call the Hardware Store (light bulbs, furniture "feet," batteries, ant traps etc etc). Easily accessed but enough out of sight that it's not an issue. Heather xo

9.5 out of 10. Our command center is a large calendar on the fridge so only gets a .5. Some of the other items you mention in your have other places in our house. I have those systems in place, but the house is still messy, mostly because I am really bad about putting things away and I am really really bad about setting things down and going on to something else. The house is much better than it was without these systems. And let me add that zoning works really well in other areas of the house; bedroom, garage, craft room, office/library. Still slowly decluttering but zoning helps tremendously with that.

Happy new year to you and yours. Need to finish decluttering my kitchen over the next 3 days as a week today I am having my useless and annoying galley kitchen taken out and the room prepared for a new more functional space and I can’t wait for storage so that I don’t have cluttered counters. Putting less back in but also after 25 years of living here it’s time to embrace new and have something that works for me.

Great tips, as always! After our house flooded while we were on vacation in late 2022 and a company moved 30 years of our “stuff” out (the things that weren’t ruined) and 15 months later moved all 800+ boxes of it back in, we decluttered as we unpacked and using a lot of your tips and methods I think we have succeeded in becoming much more organized than we’ve ever been before! We still have some boxes to unpack and a couple of rooms to set up, but the house is functioning well and I wish we had been this “efficient” when the kids were growing up lol. Oh well, better later than never! I really liked your tip about all the “extra stuff” - we had a small deep alcove in our addition bathroom that didn’t have a purpose and I built two Kallax units on casters that can slide in and out of the alcove; each “box” has a purpose - the back unit holds our travel toiletries, all the extra hardware from furniture, etc. and those odds and ends (like carpet tape) that we don’t use often. The front unit (with drawer and door inserts) holds things like extra TP, extension cords, extra cleaning supplies, etc. It’s been a game-changer to have a place to corral all those things in one place! Sorry I don’t have any ideas for NYE, though - we are boring and usually spend our NYE at home! Hope you have a great New Year!

I'm cleaning out cabinets in my kitchen that I haven't touched 😢in 29 years of living here lol lol. Now it's driving me crazy. Love you and your ideas. I took a wooden bread box that's hand-made and sitting beside my frig on the cabinet and using for vitamin storage. It's pretty and holds everything, including the otc pain killers. I put my huge juicer on top of the fridge yesterday and covered it with a pillow case. I can wash it once a month. Clearing up counter space. ❤😊

I love that sparkling grape juice or cider. The kids can even have it. We use our fancy wine glasses and toast the new year (even if it’s 10:00 with NYC! You could play a silly game ( google 500 conversation starter questions) or if you have another silly game, if you lose the game you could run around the house (outside) without a coat-kind of like taking a lap. I hope that makes sense. Just let yourself go a little wild and crazy WITH your kids.
