@rollanddev Жыл бұрын
Hmm, I respectfully disagree. :P The switch is pretty abrupt and jarring. The background instrumentation immediately stops like someone hit the off button and even the main melody switches its vibe completely and instantly. The only carry-over is the main melody's instrument (edit: ah, forgot, and the bass - although it too has completely and very much instantly shifted its vibe). Don't get me wrong, it's not as though the two parts don't sound awesome together. But it feels a bit closer to a smash-cut than a transition to me; we just don't ease into that second part any...
@WoodenClockwerk Жыл бұрын
@rollanddev i kinda feel like thats the point though. Not every transition has to be smooth or have a transition to begin with to feel cohesive, and if all music did have that easy ebb and flow it'd get boring and predictable really fast, making the pacing of the peace feel slow. That being said it does actually have transition to this section textually, as it first drops out the winds, then strings, and then the vocals to leave that bass and piano with clock ticking motif in the background. This section in it of itself is a transition to the main chrono trigger theme anyways hence why its only 40 seconds
@KieferSkunk Жыл бұрын
The clock ticking is what does it for me. The sense that, come what may, time still flows endlessly. And given the graphics at that point in the game, it gives a sense of finality - we've just said goodbye to these characters we spent the whole game with. It speaks to the emotional attachment we developed to them - at some point, you have to say goodbye and move on, and that is always hard. Chrono Trigger will always be, at least in my heart, one of the greatest games of all time.
@MiketheratguyMultimedia Жыл бұрын
I was one of the lucky ones who grabbed this game immediately upon release (I still have my original SNES copy) and spent about six months fully absorbed in it, finishing it multiple times and going out of my way to get all the different endings. I'm not sure why but I didn't get this one for a while, as I write this I can't remember the exact circumstances that are required to achieve it. When I got it I was expecting something much less, an ending I'd already gotten or something, but as Crono and Marle flew above the clouds I was really taken aback and almost kind of heartbroken. It was such a beautiful and unexpected ending, yet it also felt so deserved and perfect after I'd gotten to know and spend so much time with this game and its characters. I don't know what ending is considered the official canon one but for me it's this one, and this melody is what I'd quite probably consider to be the greatest tune ever made for a video game. It's just such a perfect, magical ode to bittersweet memories of youth and love, and the hopeful optimistic hope for the future. Truly an amazing scene, an amazing tune, an amazing ending for an amazing game. Stuff like this comes once in a lifetime.
@KieferSkunk Жыл бұрын
It truly is an amazing game with an amazing story and amazing characters. The "main" ending is the one you get when you complete the game the first time around, but it has variations depending on a few choices you make. If you don't revive Chrono, Marle floats away on some balloons instead. If you kill Magus, he doesn't appear in the ending. Otherwise, that's the ending that's tied to this music. (You can also destroy the Epoch to skip the first phase of the Lavos fight, but I don't recall what ending that results in.)

A terrific closing track to a phenomenal RPG. Chrono Trigger is one those rare games that was so great that any character flaws it may have had were easily overlooked. How many games can anyone say that about? The characters, the music, the story. Everything. What was not to love? A true classic. 😊
@KieferSkunk Жыл бұрын
The thing that Chrono Trigger did better than any other game, in my opinion, was to make you, the player, truly care about the characters. There's a common piece of wisdom about story writing: Show, don't tell. So many RPGs tell you a lot, through plot exposition, excess dialogue, rote explanations, tutorials, etc.. Chrono Trigger shows you almost everything, explaining only what is truly necessary for you to know how to proceed, but otherwise leaving the rest for you to discover. And the characters interact with one another in such a meaningful way that even if you have one you don't like, the game just wouldn't be the same without them. == SPOILER ALERT == (for anyone who hasn't played this game) And nowhere is that demonstrated better than when Crono sacrifices himself. The first time I played through the game, I was left in a state of shock that echoed that of the characters who were with him at the time. I just found myself going "No, he couldn't have...?" And I cried and felt lost when the game asked me to pick a new party and he wasn't there. This character that had always been the leader of the party and the strongest fighter, was suddenly gone, and I realized I was going to have to learn how to play the game all over again without him. That was a moment of absolute brilliance, and it still makes me cry each time I play - I even did it on a Twitch stream once and had to take a moment to gather myself before I continued playing, and by that point I'd beaten it a dozen times.
