@renatomacchi21953 жыл бұрын
@@Anidem9 Yes, but if the term Mestizo is not to your liking and I may agree with it then it's up to each one of you from Latin America to choose an identity as long as Race is still a factor in identifying people. In the future Race may not be important and not easy to figure out due to the many racial mixing also for not dividing people. This is why when people originally from Latin America use the Latin/Latino/Latina label they are confusing the issue because we all identify ourselves by using either our Race or the countries we come from or we use our continent. As for Latin Europeans : Italians, French, Romanians, Portuguese and Spaniards they never use the Latin label as an identification because Latin is not their Race. Latin is only their linguistic and cultural heritage. However, if they happen to be in a conversation when they have to identify their culture then they say they're Latins but only then. In the Americas you use Latin/Latino/Latina to identify your Skin Color, to identify your DNA, to identify your Blood, to identify your Food, to identify your Music and this amounts to twisting Roman history. Latin is none of that. Latin/Latino/Latina is the language spoken by the Romans and their Latin Culture and cannot be changed no matter how much Mexican Frank del Olmo preferred "Latino" instead of "Latin Americans/s" in identifying the Spanish-speaking people of the Americas. He made a big mistake. You have to use a Race and for many of you can be different from the others depending on the Racial Mixing or you have to say Mexican, Cuba, Honduran, Puerto Rican... or you can say "Latin American/s". This is the way it is. Italians own the Latin, language and culture. It's our Roman Heritage. I leave you a link to the former LATIN UNION and you can see the requirement to be considered Latin and what Latin means. By the way it's LATIN in English and NOT Latino. Latino/Latina can only be said in Italian, Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish. LATIN UNION. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_Union

That is how they were able to conquer. They used assimilation of the people they Conquered. Much like the Ancient Greeks. Latino is an Ethnicity and Culture. Latino is an evolution of Roman Latin from Language and Culture.
@renatomacchi21953 жыл бұрын
@@LordDirus007 You are uneducated and make no sense. The Romans were all Italian and Latin before they started colonialism and went out of Italy towards the rest of Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East. They already were Latin and what made them Latin was their Latin Language, Latin Culture and Roman Laws. The fact that as they colonized they assimilated some other non-Italian groups did not influence that they were already Latin. Moreover, the people that you mention above where all of the same race, all European except for Northern Africans. The fact is that you mention Race. Race is not a factor in determining who is a Latin person and who is not. In order to be Latin a person must speak a Latin language: Italian, French, Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish, must have the Roman Latin Culture, coming from a Country whose laws are based on Roman Laws and whose Religion is Roman Catholicism. The problem with the people from Latin America is that they use the term Latin/Latino/Latina as either being their Race or their Skin Color or their DNA. This is not true. Latin (Latino is incorrect in English-correct way is Latin) only refers to first the Latin Language spoken by the Romans and two it refers to Romance Languages and three it refers to the Latin Culture of the Romans. Nothing to do with Skin Color or Race. Everything Latin be it the Latin people, the Latin Language and the Latin Culture all comes from Italy. The Romans spread it around Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East through colonialism and when centuries later the French, Portuguese and Spaniards came to the new world to colonize they spread the Latin Languages, Roman Culture, Roman Laws and Christian Catholicism throughout what is now known as the Americas. So to conclude it's not the race of a person which determines being Latin. Latin is a culture and cannot be used for personal identification like the Spanish-speaking people do. For personal identification people must use their Race, or Country of Origin like Mexican, Cuban...or say "Latin American/s" . This is what we all do. We don't identify using a culture. In fact even the Latin Europeans seldom use the term Latin. They use their Race which is White or almost always say Italian, French, Romanian, Portuguese and Spaniards or just say European. Latin is only used when in a discussion one has to identify his or her culture and only then. You from Latin America must do the same: Use your Race, individually, or say Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican or "Latin American/s. You use the terms Latin/Latino/Latina the wrong way. Blame Mexican Frank del Olmo because he created this identity problem for you., Please go through the website of the former LATIN UNION and see the requirements to be Latin and what it means to be a Latin: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_Union

The word Latino is incorrect in English language-correct way is Latin and Latin has nothing to do with race, ethnicity, DNA, Blood and gender. I explain.- We are mistakenly called Latin, because Spanish and Portuguese are derivatives of Latin, that is, the language of the Romans, that is why... they are known as Romance languages... but... Spanish for example, also... it is derived from Germanic, Viking, Arabic, Slavic etc. Why don't we call ourselves Germanic America instead of Latin America, or Arabian America? Or why isn't the part of Canada where they speak French called North Latin America? it's absurd isn't it? Or how about...Latin Africa? Why go that Portuguese, French, Italian and Spanish are spoken there? But we speak Spanish...so...we are just Hispanics. To be Latin, our culture should include 100% the Italic, Roman or Etruscan culture at least. Mexicans, for example, are a mixture of Arabs, Spaniards, Jews, indigenous people, Africans, Germans, Moors, Berbers, and a long etc. And what does encompass all of this at the moment is the word "Hispanic America."

We will always refer to ourselves as "latino" and not "latinx". Not only does that try to "solve" an issue that's not there, which in of it's self is offensive, but trying to make every term "gender neutral" has the potential of completely changing and possibly ruin the spanish language because we use gendered pronouns for things beyond people. Lapicero, meaning pen, is a a masculine pronoun.

The term Latinx was created by Anglo Americans as a way to Anglicize the term Latino under the guise of political correctness. After all, they could have used Latine as a gender neutral word which would be more in line with the Spanish language. It's because around a few years ago, we were told that Latino is preferable to Hispanic to describe people with Latin American heritage. I guess it makes sense because just because someone comes from a Latin American country and has a Spanish name doesn't necessarily mean that they speak Spanish if they were born and raised in the USA anymore than I can speak German because my relatives were from there. Although I should point out that most Brazilians don't refer to themselves as Latino and no Spanish refer to themselves as Hispanic, so the two terms are largely interchangeable. Hispanic could also refer to the small population of Spanish speakers in The Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Morocco, all of which were Spanish colonies and still have a small minority of Spanish speakers. But Latinx was created because Anglo Americans can't stand using the term Latino because it's too Spanish sounding and are using the social justice warriors to push the word, in the hopes that eventually the word Latino will be replaced by Latinx regarding demographics.

Hispanic is a term that the US census started decades ago and only means "Spanish last name" but was basically used as a substitute for identifying Mexican/Mexican heritage because they would be otherwise identified by race as "white". Not all people of Mexican/Latin American/Puerto Rican/Cuban/etc. heritage have Spanish last names. (exp. former Mexican President Jorge Fox). Even though both of my parents are Mexican American my dad's last name is German(and so is mine). So lot's of people went for Latino which also seemed more inclusive of people from central/south/Caribbean America. Pew Foundation survey shows that 94% of people from these communities prefer the terms Hispanic or Latino. LatinX was brought up by some University Academics in the '70s but remained obscure and unused until lately by a bunch of Anglos who think they need to teach our community how to be more woke.

When we talk "latinos" you can be refering to a group that includes males, females, non binary, or any other gender since even though it's written the same as the masculine form, it doesn't apply only for men, but for literally everyone. For those who don't know, unlike english, literally EVERY SINGLE SPANISH WORD HAS A GENDER "el agua", "las flores", "la hora", etc. So for a general perspective the masculine form is usually used, even if it's not refering only to men, son "latinx" doesn't make any sort of sense. It's not custom or laziness, it's grammar. Saludos desde México

Theodore Carter You are not latino .....I´ll put it to you like this friend...Although well... WE ARE NOT LATINOS, we are Hispanic Americans and along with Brazil we are Ibero Americans bro!

In spanish the "@" has been used to replaced the o/a at the end of the word in writing when the gender is ambiguous or unclear. The problem with "latinx" isn't that they're inventing new words-we do that all the time and call it slang. The problem is that this is another example of codified language that exists ostensibly for the sake of inclusivity, but in reality is used to signal your level of education and political savvy to other cultural elitists. It supposedly exists to prevent nonbinary hispanic people from being "othered" by gendered speech, but in practice it is used as a shibboleth to "other" people who can't navigate the increasingly complex landscape of politically correct jargon.

Grammatical gender does not equal physical gender! The two may overlap in some instances but just because the they’re homonyms, that doesn’t mean they’re the same thing. The terms masculine and feminine are simply analogical terms used to give a name to the two categories of nouns, etc. in a language. When I say la gente in Spanish, I’m not implying that everybody is a woman. When I say la silla, I’m not implying that a chair has a vagina. And when I say los humanos, I’m not saying that all humans are men. And the reason some words that define groups of people in Spanish default to the masculine form when the group is mixed is not because the language literally favors the male, it’s because Latin (the language that Spanish descended from) had a grammatically neutral third category of nouns, and Spanish, through its evolution away from the Latin language eventually lost the neuter category and hence, the masculine category took its place. So the masculine category of nouns in Spanish isn’t just masculine anymore, it’s masculine AND neither. And again, this has nothing to do with physical gender! All I see when it comes to this Latinx movement is a bunch of monolingual gringos with extremely simple, narrow minds trying to force an Anglo centric view of gender on the Spanish language to make it more “inclusive” according to their (English) language rules. Spanish is not English and it is not your language! So go back to butchering your own language and leave Spanish out of it! It’s not going to change just because a few estadounidenses learned to say a few Spanish words in high school and suddenly decided that it’s grammar, that’s been the way it is for over a thousand years, offends them and that they’re too lazy to take the time to look at it from a non Anglo point of view. Again, LEAVE SPANISH ALONE! It is NOT your language!!!

It seems to have been adopted and championed by people who use English, primarily, in order to change something about another language (Spanish, or in this case, Spanglish ) about something (gender in language) that they don't understand. Going straight to the main point, if you're speaking English, it's not necessary because English is already gender-neutral with "Latin" or "Latin American". The Spanish language changes the same as any other through popular usage, but then by panels of linguists from every Hispanic country who decide if it is widespread enough to be considered part of the language. The issues of gender have been discussed, especially in regard to professions, but I don't see an abolition of gender in that language anytime soon. It won't change because somebody arbitrarily decides that it should. If people wish to use Latinx instead of Latino or Latina (ironically after feminists stressed the use of the latter for a long time), it makes no difference to me. It just seems to be a lot about nothing, since there are already gender-neutral forms that everybody recognizes.

100% right. Hispanic is a term that the US census started decades ago and only means "Spanish last name" but was basically used as a substitute for identifying Mexicans/Meixcan heritage because they would be otherwise identified by race as "white" on the census (and you can't have Mexicans passing for the same as real (aka white anglo) Americans... Pew Foundation survey shows that 94% of people from these communities who live in America prefer the terms Hispanic or Latino. LatinX was brought up by some University Academics in the '70s but remained obscure and unused until lately by a bunch of Anglos (or should I say AnglX) who think they need to teach our community how to be more woke by imposing another new label on us.

I am Uruguayan and honestly it bothers me a lot that some gringos think that ALL Latinos are brown, and that only they can be white, please if you think this about us, stop doing it, we would also like them to stop calling us "Latinxs", it bothers us a lot xdd PS: play Dark Souls and watch Fullmetal Alchemist :'D Praise The Sun!! \[T]/ 🌞

If you want a non-binary or gender neutral term use “latine”, the term the Hispanic non-binary community chose for themselves. Don’t go imposing terms onto groups you don’t belong to, specially if those terms don’t fit within the phonotactics of that group’s languages

I have never heard anyone use the word "latine". There was already a gender neutral was to refer to Latinos in America. Its called *drum roll* Latin American

@@Spoooooon-le9cp a lot of people use it, specially people who actually speak Spanish instead of performative woke gringos with a Guatemalan great great grand uncle

Latine is not a word either. Is it really that hard to use latino or latin, that r neutral words that already exists.
@akodaah13-e322 жыл бұрын
but latine is also wrong. The "O" in Latinos is a neutral masculene O that includes EVERYONE not as a gender, but a bunch of latin ppl

If you’re of Mexican descent You shouldn’t even call yourself “Latino or Hispanic” Mexicans are literally the largest ethnic group in the entire Western Hemisphere, why are we being put as the same culture of other countries? Latino or Latina are terms used exclusively in the USA to segregate people based on heritage, nothing else, they don’t want to call you “Americans” They don’t want to call every single country south of the US by their name so they put everybody in the same category even though our cultures are different from one another, forget about Latinx BS. As always the US telling other cultures they don’t understand how they should be 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️

“LatinX”? Bruh you’re making us sound like the X-Men 😂 In all seriousness, I don’t like the term at all. The Spanish Language just doesn’t work that way. There are masculine words and there are feminine words. And when it’s a mixed group of people, it’s going to be a masculine. Of course there are some exclusions like “la familia”, but a lot of words go masculine when it comes to groups of people like “Latinos”.

Isn’t the term “Latin” already gender neutral? I’m from a Latin family. Idk anybody who would hear that and think “wow his family is only male”

A term that sucks and mostly used by those who think they are latino despite being third or second generation who barely even speak Spanish.
@Blue-Delta01173 жыл бұрын
As a latino I can tell you when it comes to spanish any plural or neutral word is masculine. this doesnt happen because of gender but rather because it sounds good, example we say "La casa" not because the house is a woman but because it sounds better, else you just would be saying "El casa" can be confuse with "El caza"(translation: "he hunts"). So dont generally latinx because there is no use for it, and the times it has a use it doesnt matter again because we already have something like that Another reason we do like latinx is because a US citizen who has never spoken spanish, who he has never reaserch the language itself, who has never been to latin-america , and has no Idea the actual problems we face; Is telling us, people whos 1st language was spanish, a people who in schools tought us how the language works and have lived a good period of time in Latin-america. That we are speaking our language wrong and how we need to say word they made up a couple years regardless how against it is to our launguage roots and rules.
