Happy Mother's Day from The Gena Branscombe Project
To Mirza performed by Kristin Fahning (Soprano) and Regan Siglin (Piano) while #socialdistanSING
Throughout her life, Gena Branscombe's relationship with her mother was strong, supportive, and loving. Sara Elizabeth Allison Branscombe was a writer with articles published in newspapers and magazines and her composer daughter set her poems to music. Mrs. Branscombe's poem, "To Mirza," is inspired by Persian culture. Her imagery of heartsease flowers meaning love over a lifetime, star-gems meaning bejeweled stars, a princess and Queen of roses refer to her daughter. Each stanza of the poem represents a stage of life where she questions what a mother's role is and ends her questions with the answer, "Love at last is teaching." "To Mirza" was published in 1907 by the G. Schirmer Company. Eight years later Gena responded to her mother's sentiments by setting her own poem, "I Bring You Heartsease and Roses" and dedicated it to her mother.
