Hey I haven’t asked this is a while but could you do a video on medieval weddings and how they are shown in fantasy. I do feel like I know the basics such as the fact that who marries who is determined by class, and they are most of the time arranged by the parents. And I think like modern day weddings there is a feast and probably a dance between the bride and groom. But I also want to know the other things like, wedding dresses of the time (where they white like modern day). Did they have engagement parties. Because in my fantasy the main character’s father throws a feast to celebrate the engagement of the main character to the prince of a nation where father wants to bring into his kingdom. Though we don’t see that wedding because the main villain sieges and takes the capital and the main character ends up going on and marrying the second main character and love interest

I made a bard/warlock character that was a wanderer swordsman. rather than being a musician, he was a storyteller and the inspiration and inspiring leader feat was him telling some quick tale of heroes from the past or reminding the party of one of their many exploits and adventures. he was the group cook as well, convinced the DM to reward me with a magic item that was a magical cookbook capable of recreating any recipe, this simulated me having the feat "chef" and the DM also allowed me to combine both inspiring leader and chef to boost up the party temp HP on long rests. was quite the roleplay to have me actually cooking for the group and telling them stories of heroes from the past while sitting together around the fire waiting for the food to get ready.

And you can gather them all year round, just various ones as there are varieties that grow in every season. You can boil real salt pork to draw the salt out, then you boil your chopped veggies or beans in the brine to season them. You can even use some of the water to make dough or boil dough balls into dumplings. The best dumpling dough is mixed with extra butter 🤤. You can take the berries and mash them into a gravy like addative for over your meat.
@sststr Жыл бұрын
Typically you'll soak the saltpork in water for a few hours and toss the water as far too salty to be usable for any other purpose. Then you can boil the meat and do the other things. Even after being soaked for hours, even overnight, as much salt as you draw out, there will still be a shockingly large amount of salt still left, more than enough to season the meat, and you may find it still too salty to taste. Which if you are on the march or doing other highly strenuous things, the water retention from high salt intake is probably for the best, just don't keep eating so much salt over too long a period!

Not a fan of raw salted and peppered garlic. How about a pan, some meat and/or vegetables? And oil or butter? ;)

Just finished it, that was a great video. Made me want to go out into the woods myself and start cooking! I definitely need to expand my palate, both with regards to food and with things I know how to do. Gotta work on learning to cook better.

this is to all the fantasy writers out there, have you ever, in your fantasy story, when your brave adventures rest for the night and cook up a stew worth for the adventure ahead, I have ever sat down and said, 'I actually want to try that' and then wish to try and make it. because that has happened to me with my fantasy.
@reactiondavant-garde3391 Жыл бұрын
It is a good mindset anyway, because with this you can be sure what you write is even possible. And yes, soemtimes, but because mostly I am who cut and dig out the trees in my family garden so I have some personal experience as well.

I love this! I play DND a lot and a few characters ago I started trying to do different things with the basic rations, and ever since then I've been obsessed with trying to come up with simple, delicious meals and recipes that would be reasonable for adventures to have on the road.

You won't find a nice looking radish out in the wild. That is a carefully bred type that reverts to something less round in a generation. I think the carrots are also wrong color but also this is the time where the wild ones would go to seed based on you finding black berries. I think it is likely you walked right past other things that are good to eat. At some times of the year there would be wild grains and nuts. Some "weeds" that are members of the mustard family make greens with a garlic like flavor. And also someone adventuring and wanting to remain alive will have a pot of some sort. Boiling water and food makes it safer and also makes it easier for humans to digest.

Yeah, the foods shown in the video are not a very realistic portrayal of medieval fare, especially for adventurers who had been traveling all day and would have had only a short time to forage and hunt. I feel like there wasn't actually any research put into this video. I have no idea where they came up with the ideas of what foods to show, but a few minutes with a search engine would have suggested an extremely different menu...
@kensmith5694 Жыл бұрын
@@sststr Traveling on foot would basically mean that as you go along you would gather. You wouldn't really have a specific time where you forage.
@sststr Жыл бұрын
@@kensmith5694 many of the things you collect via gathering tend to spoil quickly. Sure, nuts and tubers might last a good while, but most vegetables and fruits and meat would spoil within a day at best. If you are just traveling in the wilderness, sure, you can collect as you go to have some stuff for your evening meal, but only for that meal as it won't last beyond that. But if you've been dungeon-crawling all day you won't have a lot of time to forage, if any, before you are wanting to eat. So it really depends on what you've been doing all day. And even marching through the wilderness won't always be useful, not all environments provide an abundance of safe to eat foods. Walking through a bog or a blizzard isn't going to provide much, if anything. For people who are really eager to know about this topic, you might consider sources like the journals of Nicholas Cresswell or the of the Lewis & Clark expedition. I know those aren't medieval, but they do give an excellent idea of people wandering about the wilderness and what there actually was to find to eat. North America is, broadly speaking, the same latitudes as Europe, and it'd be fairly similar in many ways as to what was available for forage. Not perfectly, at one point Lewis & Clark have exhausted their provisions entirely when they happen to find themselves in the right place at the right time to harvest a large number of pawpaws, which is a fruit that doesn't exist in Europe, but a similar situation with a different type of fruit could easily occur. There are many good sources for this type of content, but this video isn't one of them. It has some entertainment value, but it's not much for historical accuracy.

I don't know why people assume medieval civilizations didn't have an understanding of the culinary arts
@neoneanderthal2658 Жыл бұрын
They did. The biggest problem people today have with imagining it is just how divided certain groups of ingredients were. Nowadays you can walk in a supermarket and have access to damn near every ingredient known to man, so people assume that cuisine suffered far more than it actually did, when you didn't have that variety. People got amazingly creative though, with what they had. The diet of today is, in many people's cases in fact MORE limited in comparison. The main meats we eat are pork, chicken, beef, fish(and only certain kinds of fish) and turkey(everything aside from this was available in medieval Europe). Rabbit and mutton, which were staples of medieval European cooking have fallen by the wayside for most, duck, seafood and shellfish are almost considered a luxury and meats like goat and horse are almost absent. Not to mention game meats like pheasant, boar or venison among others. Hell, did you know you can make REALLY good honey from pine nuts? Or bread if you dry them and crush them into flour? So yeah, a lot of pre-modern day cooking was radically different from things we know today, to the point that we kinda disregard it. And that's true not just for Europe, but damn near everywhere. Every group of people had their own versions of the Mediterranean diet based on what was available. Basically the automatic assumption for what commoners ate is effectively just the list of available ingredients. Cheese, bread, onion, pickles, meat. Except people usually cooked the stuff. Made recipes. Helps it go longer too.

I live in Spain, as with many Europe countries (like Germany and Italy) we have many historical ways of preserving food, spicing food, smoking and more. Something I like to offer my Adventurers on some more "relaxed adventures" is the option to trade some of their gold or even goods to villagers or simple peasants all over towns or wandering merchants for some of this food, preserved food and rations. It's fun as sometimes these people would not want gems, magical items or even gold, as they have no way to spend it or trade it. For them food, spices, ingredients, etc might be far more valuable. Another Option I like to ask my DMs when we are on long trip adventures. I'll ask if the plan is to travel through "safe" roads. I'll pay for services such as horses, carts, wagons, "slaves", servants or squires. So they can carry most of our adventurer loot, equipments such as tents, etc...AND have them prepare camp and food. We, as the main adventurers, we'll keep them safe.

Especially the last one. I'm currently listening to a commented reading by an historian, from a book from the late 18th century. And currently the main character travels with a group of gypsies through Spain and each day they sent some of their group ahead. So every evening they arrive at the camp spot a nicely prepared meal awaits them. Slowly cooked over several hours :D

@@Glimmlampe1982 Spain have a look of heavy meals, mostly rich in meat, animal fat and lots of cholesterol. But it makes sense, since people spend most of their day up and down hills/mountain terrain taking care of their cattle, their lads or in D&D terms, adventuring. So you need all that extra calories.
