FYI, fellow listener. If you reach the end and wonder whether the story was meant to end at that point, wonder no longer. It is the end (I found a different narration; it ends in the same spot and then announces that it's the end).

Thank you for that information. I was hoping for a less painful ending but at least I do not have to wonder. See? Hardy gave us a taste at the end of finally knowing the results of greed .

Thank you for researching on our behalf. That sudden ending was unexpected and brusque, I must say!!

It's the way the narrator voiced it that makes you feel like there's more. But the ending reminds me of another famous novel's ending: "All quiet on the Western front." Just matter of fact, yet so stark. Another thought that struck me was whether Jolliffe didn't intentionally go away never to return. The way the author worded the dialogue when Jolliffe offers the idea of taking his sons with him to Joanna, and then the wording used when she runs to the shore after them.

The narrator is AI... Indeed I miss the splendid human voices.

@@sangeetachadha3377 Yes it would make sense that Jolliffe did actually plan to escape with his sons from her🤔
