I retired here (After working in Pattaya starting in 2011.) a few years ago for two main reasons - and neither one is what 'most' guys would suspect. I live in Pattaya because I refuse to ever be cold again in my life. So, the year round, warm and often hot weather is one of the main reasons why I live in Pattaya. Speaking of the weather - every day, so far in December this year - has been absolutely pristine! We have low air temperatures, clear, sunny skies and NO HUMIDITY! I realize that this weather only lasts about 3-4 and sometimes up to 6 months out of the year. The second reason (There is no order.) is the cheap rent!!! I LOVE to live by the ocean. I have a beachfront condo and the cost is a laughable fraction of what I would be forced to pay if I had a place to live in Amerika where I could walk less than 1 minute and be on the sand. As for 'entertainment' (Read: Inexpensive female companionship on demand, which is a HUGE bonus for a single man.) that - in my opinion, is 'gravy' and in no way, the 'main course' for me to be successful in living where I do, in Thailand.

As of 1/7/22 the current requirement of Thailand to retire on a monthly pension income that you can prove and document is 65,000 baht, or $1,935.24 US and then your retirement visa is good for 1 year and renewable each year as long as you continue to qualify. If you don’t have the income then 800,000 baht IS needed in a Thai bank account.

I am well adapted to retirement in Thailand. As an engineering manager I was hyper organized when working. I slowed down considerably when I retired in the US 11 years ago and even more so when I retired to Thailand 5 years ago. Nothing fazes me. As for the heat, I got fed up with the cold and damp of the foggy San Francisco Bay Area and love the heat in Thailand. I can sweat quite a bit and if I was working in Thailand that would be a problem but as a retiree it is not an issue. Dress properly and shower often and slow down! You don’t have to walk that fast! Avoid going out the afternoon. You are retired. You don’t have to be anywhere. Finally I am well funded with a good pension. I can find good food on the street but if that is not your thing then you can eat very cheaply at Thai restaurants. I eat out about 50% of the time. Cook 50% of the time. I eat Thai food about 70% of my meals.

@@onedge1176 The western food I cook most often these days is Mexican chili. I brought back a lot of chili powders during my last visit to California. I am down to the last of it and good Mexican chili powders are hard to find here. After that I cook pasta sauces. One is a seafood pasta sauce where I use a lot of Thai seasonings. My wife is a great cook when it comes to Thai food.

Another gem Daz. You’re right, Thailand isn’t a country if you’re uncomfortable with discomfort and chaos. That makes me wonder how come so many Germans live there haha. On the expenses part, my cousin lives in Bangkok. When he had a Thai girlfriend his expenses were somewhere around 130THB per month which included 18K baht per month that he will pay to his girlfriend and some 10k baht to the girl’s family. Now he has become a bit wiser and his expenses have fallen down to 75K per month which includes 3-4 different girls per month. I think a permanent girl friend is more expensive in the long run than a few hours of bedroom fun with different women every week. Never understood the lure for Thai women. What I’ve noticed is that men married with Thai women have expenses equivalent to living expenses in far better places like Mexico, Spain, and Serbia. Well, Serbia is way cheaper than Thailand with p hub quality women.

The Aussies like it for the pussy, because we have the weather, but like I said even after eating Thai food for a fortnight you wake up wanting beans on toast, bacon and eggs, that's why Pattaya was a good place to live because you could go and get that. Thailand checks all the right boxes. Cost of living, weather, adult entertainment and best of all Thailand time. I grew up in Hawaii and Hawaiian time is the same. Don't sweat it, pardon the pun. Won't need to own a car and that saves bunch of wasted money. Thailand also has the right demographics and is a formal allie of the USA so good from a geopolitical perspective as well. Good medical care if you go private. I want to die with dignity and not be ripped off or abused, Thailand will check that box for pennies on the dollar. Besides has anyone ever seen more beautiful women in one place?

Great stuff, I used too visit expats up and down the country and i have to say that the main consideration which i suggest, is think beyond 75 and what it will be like. All my visits were hard for me especially when friends made 80 onwards , the struggle with heat and confined too restricted rooms with air-con ,however accommodation as improved. However i am glad to admit that every Thai wife done their husbands proud ,some of the funerals were beyond my expectations.

At 10:15, if you aren't going to deposit 800,000b, and you want to do your extensions legitimately, Thailand says your minimum should be 65,000b. Personally, I'm not willing to keep 800,000b on deposit in Thailand so I've done my 10 years of extensions based on monthly income.

As alluring as the concept of a relaxed life sounds, your video has made it very clear to me that after awhile I would not accept such a (in my conclusion) very good place for me. I had no idea I was such a demanding person. That surprises me because I always thought the opposite about myself. This revelation about my core values is such a surprise to me. Your video has taught me to see myself as I really am and not as I erroneously thought I was. I am completely surprised at this discovery. Your insights are very helpful. With regard to being laid back, my experience with Thai people here and in the US is that when the shoe is on the other foot, Thai people are totally wingey. If they wait, they are unhappy; if I am late my Line app blows up. They are quick to call others liars behind their backs. The women are far from the docile companions who roll with the ups and downs. They can be very demanding and require a great deal. Thais require that their culture is respected but make little accommodation for the culture of the outsiders. Giving a salary to your girlfriend is not the practice is the rest of the world but required by Thais. And try to get Thai people to eat non-Thai food. Mostly, they won't even try. The French and the Italians are not bad at cooking.

To be fair I think most salary situations are not "a loving relationship " . Especially if the age gap is large. I guess any bloke married to a farang woman who doesn't work but shares the joint bank account is "giving her a salary" by default. At least with the Thai GF the amount is set by negotiation. 5555. It does seem most send lots home to the village. Farangland/Thailand = 2 very different worlds in multiple respects.

@@onedge1176 as with most life situations, I believe it comes down to world view. Western, Judeo- Christian relationships, in the ideal, are two becoming one established by God. The commitment to the oneness gives a higher purpose. This striving to complete the whole allows for overlooking the conflicts of the day. Each one of us has enough flaws to justify a split; I know I do. It is the commitment to the commitment that keeps it going. The issue of money is not quite so important in this context. The Thai view of relationship, it seems to me, starts with a salaried girlfriend, then on to sin sod (call it what you will but it is the buying of the girl from her parents), and then buying a house in the name of the girl or her family because the farang cannot own land. After fulfilling the requirements of the financial deal, the relationship starts, but the Thai girl’s family is still her first priority. And sanook is the Thai operating environment. If you overlook this reality, you do so at your own peril. New financial deals are easily found. Two merged into one seems a much sturdier foundation.
@alexandermayer2026
@alexandermayer2026 2 жыл бұрын
@J C sorry for your calamities. The “arrangement” with Thai girlfriend is much more voluntary unless you are trusting enough to move assets into her or her family’s name. Marriage to a Thai woman becomes much more like hooking an IV into one of your blood vessels. Once the direct pipeline runs dry, you may be gone. Love is based way to much on “taking care” of the woman, not commitment to the union of marriage. We will probably never learn because of our Judeo- Christian worldview and inherent kindness.
@alexandermayer2026
@alexandermayer2026 2 жыл бұрын
@J C your openness and obvious pain are very moving. Understanding Thai-ness often comes too late. By Judeo-Christian I only the definitions of ideals with which we grow up. Truth would probably be the beginning - Thais have no concept. Admitting mistakes, making amends, learning and moving forward would be repentance; saving face flies right in the face of this. Trust underpins relationships; not known to Thais. Cleaving to your mate is how two people marry and become one. Sin sod denotes this BUT Thai parents require pre- eminence in the life of the daughter after you enrich them. So, as you can maybe better understand with these examples, you mix worldviews at your own peril. My heart reaches out to you.

Pattaya is a good spot to check-out. Lots of expats but many are not as low key and chill as Daz and get rather tainted and do a lot of complaining like company employees at a Happy Hour. Pick your friends and acquaintances carefully. Thailand is full of friendly and beautiful people. Best of luck!

My first time in the Philippines I was to meet a girl at the mall....she kept saying she was enroute but after about 30 minutes I got pissed off and left. I didn't know at the time about Asia time. I've since learned and I'm very conscious of trying to be very easy going when I'm there but once in awhile I still slip and have to remind myself where I am.

You're right at the beginning !! l lived in Greece 5 years now and l just accept things the way they are now !! It's much better for the stress and blood pressure !! The first two years were so frustrating !! "Why do they park like that in the middle of road ? why do they have no lights in the dark , why do two cars park exactly opposite each other in a empty street in the middle of a village forcing the traffic through a narrow gap , why do the builders never turn up to finish the roof ? why does no one turn up on time ? why don't they put warning signs out when they are working in the road ? Why do they park in the road after a blind bend ? Why are the streets lights on during day but off at night ? Why do drive like morons and so aggressively , why do they pull straight out at junctions even when they see you coming ? why do pedestrians in towns step out without looking? why on main roads do they walk with their backs to the approaching traffic on their side ,when there 's no pavement ? why do they walk in country roads in the dark with no lights and wearing dark clothes ? why do pedestrians take so long to walk across the road ( not crossing straight from one side to to the other but diagonally ) .Why do the ignore red lights ,no entry signs and go up one way streets the wrong way ?? ln the end l just accepted this the way things are and you can't change it !! Better for the health if l just accept it !!

Ok as a Greek I have to testify:) Greece is not as bad as it is described, and yes its not Germany or Sweden where you go in the middle of nowhere to fish and find a parking slot machine next to the lake and somebody hiking in the bushes waiting for you to get a bit late and give you a nasty fine.. Or USA where your neighbors call the police because you exceeded your parking time for 2 minutes..and yes I prefer Thailand over every western country lived in 4 and traveled quite a bit..

Daz, as you mentioned cooking, how about visiting all the markets in Pattaya? Where they are located, where to get certain ingredients like fish, meat, veg, salad, fruit, spices, the pros & cons of supermarket v fresh stall markets. I particularly love seafood, and you could identify items that are not common to us, and what these things taste like. Also, as you are a good cook, how about a few lessons, with all the ingredients you have purchased. What do you think? If you do not think cooking is appropriate for this channel, maybe start another just for this subject and have links to it from this channel.

I've studied and practiced Buddhism since the 1980's. When I lived in Thailand ten years ago, this helped me to let go of my western obsession with time. If you are disinterested in learning about Buddhism and you live in Thailand, I'd suggest reading Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations". Stoicism had a lot in common with Buddhism, especially detachment and tolerating the 'foolish and stupid' people around you. It's not really possible to fully understand a European/Western mindset unless you have some understanding of Christianity, by comparison. The chaos of Thailand is partly the product of centuries of Buddhist influence, in my opinion. คลายอารมณ์

The presumption that all men come to Pattaya for the ladies is probably not a reality. Some come to have a nice place to relax, travel, and do something different. You can get a set top box which will have every sport known to man. Then you can go to bars like iRover or Retox or Witherspoon's etc which have 15 or 20 TVs with a different sport on each one. I don't think you are focusing on what it's going to cost to try and retire to Thailand. Some pensions don't even cover the monthly requirements to stay. There are four steps to acquiring a visa to retire in Thailand. First, you have to obtain a non-immigrant visa by providing the Thai consulate with your passport and proof that you have enough funds. The financial requirements are: Bank account with THB 800,000 or $31,250AU in the Bank at all times. Monthly income of at least THB 65,000 or $2,539 a month. The Australian single pension for living overseas is $1,600 a month so it's a no go. Take the pussy out of the place and it's got nothing.
@markdavies1473
@markdavies1473 2 жыл бұрын
You don't have to leave 800,000 baht in all the time though , just for a few months- drop then down to 400,000baht.. And then reuse the recycling method, deposit 65,000baht into a thai bank account, then what you don't use transfer back to your own bank account in your own country , then simply keep topping up each month to 65,000b .. Or just leave the 800,000 baht in , simples.

@@markdavies1473 just listen to yourself. Who wants to have to do that when you go there to retire. With a name of Mark Davies you are either from the UK or Australia and both pensions are not enough to comply with the monthly requirement. There are better countries to retire to that welcome you unlike Thailand. If you drop dead in Thailand, it will take a family member to take the trip out there to recover your body because under Thai law you can not be buried there, your classed as pollution.

I'd imagine that for a lot of people one of the biggest issues they might worry about in retiring to somewhere like Thailand is what the healthcare is like? I mean, no matter how healthy and spry you may feel when first deciding to retire abroad, if you stay there's going to come a time when you may worry a lot more about health issues. Is this something where someone might have to return to the UK or Europe for the healthcare they'd paid taxes to cover for most of their life, or is healthcare also very cheap and readily available? Are there retirement homes or assisted living options if someone gets to a point where they might need some help?
