I'm a Nexus user and I find no compelling reason to root, even though I know how and I can very easily root my phone. I stopped rooting after lollipop, since it has encryption by default. Having a phone unlocked/rooted messes with this security. also, some apps won't work if your phone is rooted, which pretty is a reason I stopped. Plus, Nexus phone have no bloat so it's not as important for me as it is for someone with a carrier branded phone. I may root later down the road when I upgrade and use this Nexus 6p as a backup phone rather than my daily driver.

ellieisfit15 Rooting doesn't void your warranty, because on *some* phones, you can root it without needing to "unlock" your phone first. This is sometimes referred to as a "half root", meaning you'd get root access, but you'll still be limited to stock ROMs, and that you still can't flash a custom kernel. Sony Xperia phones are like this for example, and until you fully unlock them, you can just simply re-flash one of their stock firmwares to remove the root access.

@@AdamSmith-gs2dv exactly! if you have the common sense, latest security patches, a secure root manager app, and make nand backups regularly, it is actually pretty secure on stock firmware that doesn't get updates, there may be a rootkit exploit and if you're on a stock firmware without root, you may be unable to remove the malware (not a hypothetical examples it has actually happened before), but with nand backups you can simply restore the state if your device does get infected. another thing, if there are no updates, eventually you get certificate errors when browsing some https websites (there are probably ways to import those, but staying on up to date firmware is one solution)

Actually, bricking a phone is of two types- *soft brick* and *hard brick*. While flashing ROMs, there is a possibility that the phone can get _soft_ bricked (i.e. get stuck in a bootloop) and never boot. This can be easily fixed by heading back into Recovery Mode and re-flashing the same or another ROM, or performing a factory reset. Soft bricks can be easily fixed. On the other hand, _hard_ bricks are difficult to fix. This happens when the device cannot boot into Recovery Mode or anything else and gets completely stuck at the initial boot logo; or the screen doesn't even come on. This may be a permanent issue and may be caused by incorrectly installing Recovery/Bootloader updates from unreliable sources. *Flashing ROMs does **_not_** cause hard bricks*, so your point over there is invalid, *****.

Do you speak from experience? Companies will do anything to avoid spending money they don't need to spend. Why do you think the very first step ANY company will have you do before starting an RMA claim is to factory reset the phone? Hardware manufacturers want to make sure that the issue isn't cause by software. If you modify the software, they'll argue that it's not their hardware that's broken, but rather your modifications that caused the damage.

They've gotten TouchWiz to the point where it's almost it's own OS. Based on your description, I take it that "Android Enthusiasts" are "noobs". When I first held an android device, i was so excited. But when I tried to upgrade it, I had a very bad experience using Samsung Kies. I tried to upgrade the OS of my phone during the first week i got it -- guess what? my phone got soft-bricked. So, I sent it to scamsung, and they took 3 weeks to fix it -- thats right, THREE WEEKS!!! I was a noob then, but now...after knowing how to root & flash and all (thanks to XDA)..I'd definitely recommend everyone to root and flash their devices. Just a side note -- scamsung does not support updates on outdated devices. In my opinion, warranties are just useless, coz what a warranty usually covers is just the software problems, and not hardware problems. There are lots of custom ROMs out there which are much better, full of features and more flexibility in customizing.

If you only want to do stuff like hacking games, then you don't need to root. Theres no need to take the risk. You can just go to an Android piracy site and you can get all the games hacked already for you, so you just have to install them. Hacks like "infinite money" and stuff like that. If you want to flash a custom firmware onto your device and add/remove features that are normally hardcoded, then I think thats the only time you need to root. For just hacking and piracy, you virtually never need to root. If you're into hacked/modded games, just google for "modded APK's", or google the name of the game you want + mod, EG "Farmville + Mod APK". Remember to just be careful which site you DL from, and use an antivirus on your phone/tablet too.

The way I see it, if you own a Nexus device there's little to no reason for rooting. You'll already be on the latest, greatest Android version before even CyanogenMod can get there. You'll have absolutely zero bloatware, just pure Android how it was meant to be and you still have tonnes of customization options available to you. There has been one single reason I had been considering jailbreaking my new Nexus 6P and the reason is as follows... ...I want to experience a purely stock, stable Android experience. That includes the stock launcher. However, I also want my homescreens laid out a specific way. Google Now launcher will let me create those homescreens but not lay them out how I want. I like my default homescreen to have a clock & weather widget along with a folder of essential Google apps and a folder of network provider apps. To the left of the default I like to have two calendar widgets. Month view and agenda. To the right I like my Facebook and Twitter social widgets. Google Now launcher lets me do this, but not alter the default homescreen so Google Now is ALWAYS to the left of my default homescreen. Of course, I can install a custom launcher to circumvent this but i would prefer that Google had allowed this within their own launcher.

I've bricked my phone before, if it's a soft brick and just gets stuck on the opening logo, you just hold PWR + VOL UP until you boot into recovery, you should keep a stock rom on your phone if you root anyways so just wipe, clear cache, and reinstall new rom. If it's a hard brick, install through your bootloader, you can always side load a rom through your laptop, usually flash a stock rom and BAM. both methods take maybe 15 min including the wait time. About disadvantages: You don't permanently loose your warranty, you just have to flash back your stock firmware before you give your phone for some repairs (i did that and it works). About bricks: maybe i'm wrong, but i think it is possible only on flashing custom recovery for the first time, after that you always have a backup in case you get bootloop or anything gets wrong. In my opinion rooting is great idea, but if you have stock android on your phone, you should leave the rom, just use xposed for any custom features you desire.

Firstly, BEST INTRO EVAR! Secondly, As foolish it may sound I have seen people buying a phone because one had brightness slider and toggles and other didn't. People DO care about these tweaks, they just don't know its possible and so easy. Lastly, Rooting increases your security if you know what you're doing. Plenty of xposed modules available that save you from deadly bugs and privacy breaching apps.

I'm an enthusiastic enthusiast. I rooted my Nexus 7, as Cyanogenmod had the handy installer. I've since returned to stock 4.4.4. I've thought about rooting my One M8 but I like it just the way it is, so I won't be bothering with that.

I currently use an AT&T LG G2 and have it rooted, and it is fantastic, as Jayce said you can tweak to your hearts content, however there are many many many non tweak related things such as free IAP purchases, or recording your screen, however back onto the tweaking aspect, I simply hated the menu button and having to hold the home button to go to recent apps as I had no use for the menu button. However because I rooted I was able to change my onscreen buttons and changed that menu button into a recent apps button, I was able to create custom LED colors for things like charging status, messages, calls its all there and if you are willing to look past those risks mentioned it is quite easy and simple. All you have to download the correct computer program, connect your phone and boom your rooted within two minutes. Oh and did I mention custom boot animations?

If you brick your phone you can flash an original OEM to your phone. If your brick it, just factory reset and find one on Google for your SPECIFIC device. I can guarantee you there is one for every phone. In the near future (or there probably already is one) there might be one for the G3 or new phones to come when the time comes. Also you should look into doing a nandroid backup. It's backs up 100% of what is currently on your phone even photos or videos you deleted on accident from what currently is on your phone that you delete in the future. You just need to install TWRP or CWM or any other recovery. Benefits: allows you to try different roms. If you don't like it just flash the nadroid backup and your phone is 100% back to the way it was, yes even after a factory reset. Another benefit is if you do brick your phone (by not factory resetting, removing data cache partition and dalvik cache when flashing a rom, EPSECIALLY an AOSP ROM) you can just restore/flash the nandroid backup. Ive bricked my S5 twice but thank God to nandroid backup and flashing original OEMs. I'm currently running XtreStolite ROM, a debloated ROM that removes 1 GB of needless bloat on my S5. My phone has never performed as fast as when I first got it, blowing away benchmarks. Good luck, and have fun.

Rooting does give you control over your memory but now since my Verizon M8 comes with 32GB internal and SD card option I don't mind ignoring the bloatware. Also in case anyone hasn't noticed it you can still move apps to the SD card on newer versions of Android. The M8 let's you move apps to the SD card as long as they are downloaded apps and not the pre-installed ones. I have heard other devices with the same feature which is good to know you don't need root anymore to at least move some apps.

Isn't flashing a new radio (when not knowing what you're doing) is what mainly causes bricking your phone?

Manufactures will start making all phone unlocked from factory. This means that the phones will work on many more net works and the need to unlock or flash them will be no more. Especially since flashing most phones is illegal at the moment.

I'm an android geek I rooted my last phone and it worked and I could do things android wouldn't allow me to do. I'm trying to root my new phone and I'm having problems with it the masterkey vulnerability stops me from rooting my phone what should I do?
@zone0710 жыл бұрын
▲▲▲▲ Rooted running CM11; Why? It allows my legacy device to run the latest version of Android (4.4.4) thus allowing me to install newly released apps; plus gets rid of bloatware and allows room for more apps to be installed.

I'm a geek. I've rooted almost every phone i've owned. I usually stay away from custom roms unless they're based on the stock rom that comes on the phone. I like to remove bloat and turn off annoying stuff like start up sounds and volume warnings.

The custom kernels, the custom roms that give u xtra features and more QS's and more more more. Once you are in the world of Rooting - there is no goin' back ! Cheers !
