This is also one of my favorites for the year, and I've been talking it up to everyone I know! Glad to know I'm not alone. It's now been chosen by two of my bookclubs this year.

I picked this up from the library not too long ago, and it was a great time. There are so many little things like confusion about traditions, assumptions on what is and isn't acceptable that were well integrated into the story. I loved it and agree that more people need to read it!

yes it's so layered in a way I wasn't expecting! it needs all the hype!

Never was interested in the smutty dragon book, but this sounds really good. Bought the ebook and will read once I finish my current read.

I'm so glad you loved this book! It's probably my favorite of the year so far. However, I wouldn't call it YA. It's published by Del Rey, which is an adult imprint, and to me, there is something indefinable in the writing style which reads as more adult. I think people hear "magic school with dragons" and assume YA, but Anequs is considered to be an adult by her culture, and I think that is reflected in the book.

Del Rey has always run into this issue because they do typically publish adult but their books are often nominated for YA awards and they do accept them. So it does become more of a grey area. I personally view this as upper YA because although Anequs herself is seen as a woman in her culture, the characters around her and her setting is very much YA-coded. I also don't think YA is an insult, and the themes explored here are very coming of age, which is often associated with YA. Ultimately I think the book has wide appeal, and the age category anyone puts it into is largely irrelevant.
