The most interesting seminar was one I attended at Sherman Oaks Experimental College in 1980....Set Designer for BATMAN....Dianne Wager. She was the one who came up with the idea of firepoles for the decent into the Batcave....and the controversy they caused between her....Dozier...and Adam West... The set design team needed to show a way that would give viewers a way to show how Bruce and Dick became the Dynamic Duo...something that would be as impressive as the Superman TV series showed Clark.Kent going in the Supply Room, and whip off his hat and glasses to become The Man Of Steel. They reviewed the old Columbia Batman serials...and felt changing clothes in the Batmobile would be anticlimactic. Most of the set crew were old school guys...many from NYC. To them, their local heroes were cops, firemen, and soldiers. At that time, most NYC fire stations were 2 story...with firepoles. Some even had family members as firemen...and would witness them coming down the poles decked out in firegear...their "super hero" gear. This is what they all decided would be the way for the actors to transition from real ID to superhero. The team ended up getting fire poles from the LAFD when they were decommissioning older 2 story fire stations to modern 1 story ones like Compton's Station 54 which was the setting of "Emergency". The only problem was...Adam West wanted a fatter fire pole....so they had to construct one from old houses being demolished that had basement support posts that were thicker than the standard fire pole. That became Adam's pole, while Dick's pole was a standard fire pole.

I enjoyed watching Batman and I always will. To the Batpoles was one of my favorite quotes. The other was Hold tight, Batman turn before Batman would pull the red lever to do a quick 180 plus the parachutes. The position of Wayne's manor in relationship to the batcave is utterly bonkers. Above, Bruce's pole is to the right of the viewer, and Bruce runs to it away from the camera. In the cave, Batman's pole is also to the right of the viewer, and Batman runs from it towards the camera. That means that the Shakespeare bust is more or less directly above the Batmobile, and the whole room, moving away from the poles, overlooks the cave's entrance/exit, i. e. the desert! But there's no indication that Bruce's dispatch has a view to the wilderness! Who cares? The show is a gas!

I love how they always run there so awkwardly, because the distance is so short and the risk of running into each other in the narrow secret passage is so high. I bet it happened multiple times and instantly apologizing fits this Batman rather well

I Know that Batman is just a tv show, but for the Gotham City police to depend on a masked vigilante or deputized agents of the law as Batman calls Robin and himself really shows me how incompetent that they are.

It's in the studio of the great MAD magazine caricature artist, Tom Richmond (or if it's not the actual prop, it's a good replica), who is a huge fan of Batman. He uses it to turn on the light under his drawing table. You can do a KZbin search for Tom Richmond studio Tour, and it's at about 18 minutes into the hour.
